Who: Angel Dumott Schunard and OTA
What: Angel is making her badass entrance to Lawrence. She’s in love, so even Kansas can’t bring her down.
Where: One second NYC and the next downtown Lawrence.
When: Present day, but in the afternoon.
Angel was absolutely on cloud nine! How lucky she considered herself to be after stumbling upon Collins that night. He hadn’t been so fortunate at the time, having been mugged and without a coat due to his attacker’s sticky fingers. The City was kind of cruel in that way, all filled with people who wanted to do other people wrong. But it had worked out in a divine kind of way, hadn’t it? Now Angel and Collins were professing their love to one another and it left her wanting to drum out enthusiastic beats on some random trash can lid. It made her want to dance. Overwhelmed by the euphoria, Angel did dance at least a little, with a twirl and skip incorporated into her usual gait.
It was easy to get distracted in such a frame of mind, but soon enough she was noticing little differences. The air was warmer than that of the air in New York City and fewer pedestrians roamed the sidewalks. Then there were the sidewalks themselves, differing from the ones she’d become accustomed to. The happiness that hung around her like a pleasant kind of fog gave way to confusion. She eyed businesses’ signs and when she reached a lonely looking newsstand she took a peek at the local papers and periodicals. No, this wasn’t New York City. According to what she was seeing it was Kansas. Angel smirked, murmuring a Wizard of Oz joke to herself.
The sensible explanation was that this was all a wonderfully elaborate dream or hallucination, but Angel had no idea how her mind could have possibly constructed this image of midwestern, urban America. She’d never been to Kansas before and this seemed a little too real to be a dream. Maybe, she decided, that answers would come in time. All she needed to do was roam around a bit, gather more clues like some kind of detective.
