WHO: Clark & Claire
WHAT: Clark is being helpful.
WHEN: Not too long after Claire's arrival!
WHERE: A shop in the mid-city area.
RATING: PG to start.

Clark may not have come from the same world or lifestyle or even time as some of the new arrivals, but -- if nothing else -- he knew that he could relate to them when it came to the shell-shocked feeling of having been thrown from one's day-to-day life to this. The apocalypse. End of the world, starting smack in the middle of Lawrence, Kansas. No matter where you came from, the switch over seemed impossible to simply up and accept right on the spot. That was the sole reason as to why the boards had been so successfully useful ; if not for them, most of the newcomers wouldn't know what to do with themselves, nor would they have any idea why their lives had changed so drastically to begin with. The boards gave people like them a chance to interact with people like Clark and the others, who knew what was going on and how to best help. In most cases, Clark tried answering as many questions as he could, in hopes of aiding those who were new to the entire situation in the knowledge that they needed to survive around here. Today? It was different. The girl that he had spoken with on the boards had seemed a little more than on the troubled side, which immediately concerned Clark. He was raised better than to shuffle and ignore when a person was overwhelmed with something, particularly in an emotional way. If they didn't want his help and if there was truly nothing that he could do to see to it that they were okay, then Clark would back away and leave that person to it. But when he was in a position where he felt as though he could make a difference, especially in such a way where the person in question seemed interested in him doing what he could, Clark didn't hesitate. As such had the case been with Claire, who had agreed to meet Clark at a shop in the mid-town area.

It didn't take him long to get there at all. In fact, Clark had to circle the block a few times slowly on foot as to avoid giving Claire another unexpected surprise (inevitable as it may have been, since eventually Claire was going to find out that not everyone here in Lawrence dutifully fit right into the textbook definition of average person). He was sure after all this, the last thing she needed was for the man she had been talking to on the boards to magically pop up beside her not but a half second later.

When a healthy fifteen minutes had passed over, Clark entered the shop. He was quick to spot Claire (he recognized her face from the little picture she had on her post), so Clark walked over, tugging the red hoodie up a little, as to hide the shade of blue that had been creeping up his neckline. When he was within a formal distance of her, Clark raised a hand and waved, trying for a friendly, "Claire?" as he went.

Claire was still reeling, even after talking to Loki and Needy. None of this made any sense, then again nothing in the last few months had made sense to her. She couldn't help but think meeting as many people as possible would be a good thing, she could hopefully find out more of what was happening that way. Besides, she refused to believe she couldn't go home, there had to be a way somehow. Claire was not about to give up.

As she waited for Clark she couldn't help but replay Jackie's death in her head over and over. She couldn't help but wonder if there was something she could have done. But there wasn't. The guy had thrown her into the lockers like she was nothing - and then he knew, he knew he had been wrong, but he killed Jackie anyways.

Claire wiped the tears forming in her eyes. She wasn't going to let Clark see her cry, not like this, not on their first meeting. She had gotten cleaned up enough she was no longer covered in blood, she was in baggy sweatpants and an equally baggy hoodie, her hair tied back in a matted ponytail.

Upon hearing her name she turned around, at first she wasn't sure what to do - but she forced herself to smile (at least a little). "Clark? Yeah, it's me...hi."

Once Claire verified that he was talking to the right person (which was a relief, Clark really didn't want to be that awkward guy who went around mistaking one person for another), Clark immediately extended a warm smile her way. Her eyes looked a little red, like maybe she had been crying, but Clark didn't comment on them, in spite of the worried look that briefly creased his face. If she wanted to talk about it, she would. He wasn't going to push her into it right away, especially not within the first couple seconds that they had officially met one another. "Hi!" He reached out and offered her a large hand. "It's nice to officially meet you, Claire. I think we agreed on lunch?" Being tossed into a wild city without warning and then being forced to wandering around it's streets, trying to figure out all that had happened for who even knew how long must have been a tiring experience for Claire. She was probably hungry and in need of some rest and relaxation. Clark would see to it that she got all of those things, starting with a warm meal.

He remembered his first time into the city. He had spent a whole day trying to figure everything out, only getting to the apartment complex much later on. Clark honestly didn't even remember when he had gotten the chance to eat, between the panic, worry, and confusion that had overtaken him all at once.

That was part of why he was so insistent on feeding Claire, he thought. Well, that and he was pretty sure his mother, Martha Kent, would have given him a hard time for not minding his manners and doing something nice for the poor girl when she was upset and smack in the middle of a crisis. Clark smiled fondly at the memory of the woman. He missed her.

"What do you like to eat? There are a few places around here we could check out. Actually, I think there's a Tropical Smoothie down the street if you want to try that? They've got wraps and smoothies. It's a good combination." He'd show her he was friendly. Make her understand that she wasn't being threatened or walked into some crazy kidnapping scheme or something.

"Lunch, yeah," Claire nodded, accepting Clark's hand and shaking it. He seemed nice enough, which was exactly what Claire needed right now. That and something normal. She needed normal more than anything right now. Maybe for a little while she could pretend to be normal too, even though the back of her mind would be nagging her the entire time she wasn't. Besides, unless she was concentrating all she could see and hear was Jackie; her bloody face, her eyes - her screams. Claire shook her head slightly, and tried to smile again. It wasn't convincing and she knew it, but for now she wasn't going to say a thing.

She wondered if her dad knew she was missing yet. He was going to freak, especially because she wasn't supposed to go out anyways. Claire wished she had listened to him, she wished she had ignored Zach and spent the night sulking in her room.

It was only when Clark mentioned wraps, that Claire realized how hungry she actually was. She had heard about people having different reactions to a bad shock, maybe extreme hunger was how she dealt with it. "That actually sounds really good," Claire nodded, hoping that Clark wasn't able to hear her growling stomach.
