Who: Anatoly and Elle
What: Anatoly is wandering and thinking.
When: Right now!
Where: Just outside the complex for starters
Warnings: TBA

This world was incredibly strange to him. Technology was far beyond what it had been in his time. Then there was the fact he was in America. He had a lot to learn about this place. While he was largely a robot when it came to emotions, he would make sure his girls were safe from the demons and any other dangers this world posed. Inwardly, he was glad Svetlana and the girls were here. It meant he'd be able to know they were safe. He would make a point to visit with the girls as much as he could. Lord knew he had a lot to make up to them. He had much much more to make up to Svetlana, but he wasn't even sure where they stood now. They had been heading back to Russia when he'd ended up here, but they hadn't exactly talked anything out. It went without saying that she was still pissed at him for what happened at the chess tournament. But what she seemed to fail to realize was he'd won for her, for their family. He'd also won to finally get Molokov off of his case, beat him at his own game. Anatoly knew he could better protect people if he won.

Florence hadn't understood either. But he knew he could only really help her father if he'd won. He brought the wrath of Florence and Svetlana down on him for winning, but he had to settle for the hope that some day, somehow, they both would understand. If either of them ever really knew him, really understood him, they would eventually understand why he won. Anatoly wasn't always up front with his thoughts and feelings when they mattered most, well at least not anymore, so he wouldn't exactly come out and say it. He could only hope that since both women were here, they'd eventually understand.

Wanting to get a better grip on his surroundings, Anatoly left his room in the complex and made his way down to the main floor. It was still surprising to him that a place like this complex existed. Then again, in a world where refugees showed up without warning, it should be expected there was a place where they could all stay with no worry of paying. Not everyone had the same currency as America, and perhaps even some people that showed up had no money at all. Stepping out into the afternoon light, Anatoly glanced around. He was glad that he knew English, it would help him get around. First thing was first, where should he go? He could take a walk around the block, making note of the streets that ran around the complex. That way, he'd have a better chance of finding the complex if he walked far in the city and got lost. He could always ask for directions, he wasn't above that if he was lost. As he decided what to do, he stood there, looking up and down the street, taking note of the buildings across the street. In his thoughts, he wasn't really aware of anyone else coming in his direction.

It was surprising how Elle’s training as a Company woman came in so handy at times. As an example, she was pretty much a pro at running surveillance. Give her a spot to sit and an extra-extra-large cherry Slusho and she could last hours just stalking her intended prey. The last time she’d done this was for work and it had turned out to be a hot mess. Triggering sprinkler systems was not a good thing when you were as full of electricity as Elle was.

If it was any other day she would have found herself across town at Epiphany’s complex, maybe skimming through a magazine or watching Mob Wives, but she’d decided last night that she was going to pursue Anatoly. Growing up she was rarely denied what she wanted and she’d decided that she definitely wanted the attractive Russian. She’d done her hair, dressed flatteringly, and declared herself perfectly prepared. All she had to do was wait patiently, sipping contentedly at her Slusho.

A tiny smile crept onto her face when he stepped into view. Now was her moment.

Elle acted as if she was just strolling by, doing a double take as she passed Anatoly.

“Anatoly?” She showed off what she considered to be her cutest smile. “I’m Elle. We spoke online.”

Anatoly was completely unaware of Elle's intentions for him. When he heard her voice, it startled him a little bit as he hadn't expected anyone to approach him, let alone really know his name. When she introduced himself, it then made sense. He gave a little nod and a little polite smile. "Oh, hello. Yes, I remember, you offered directions and help."

Well, she certainly had timing for showing up. If he'd known better, he might have picked up on the fact that she hadn't just happened to stroll by. But Anatoly was still wrapping his mind around the time travel thing and that there were demons and such running around in this place. It would be helpful for him to get the direction help since he really didn't even know where to start in getting his bearings in the city. "I was just going to walk around the city a little, see if I can learn my way around a little. Do you know of any places of interest?" He wasn't looking for anything specific, he mostly wanted to learn what this city had to offer. Hopefully Elle would help him learn his way around a little bit so he wouldn't always have to rely on someone else telling him where things were.

“There’s a lot around here.” She nodded with a smile. Lawrence was not on her list of favorite urban areas, but for the moment she could pretend that the whole place was a fascinating lump of culture worth being enthused over. Elle mostly knew the bars and the shady local haunts thanks to the fairly laid back crew she associated with and not much else. It took a second to scour her mind for an idea that might appeal to a Russian intellectual type.

“Restaurants, movie theaters... There’s a natural history museum a little way from the downtown area.” Her favorite bars, the Flamingo Club... She decided that it wasn’t the right time to mention those places. It was kind of sudden to take a guy like Anatoly to get loosened up by way of liquor and blaring music. Her first impression of him suggested that he’d react negatively to that sort of thing.

“Have you eaten? We could grab something to eat.” Elle eyed him curiously, still with the friendly smile on her face. “I would pay, of course. You probably don’t have money, yet.”

Anatoly was a little wary of movie theaters. Why? It most likely had to do with all the propaganda the Soviet government had fed to its people. While there were certain people that would label him a Communist, Anatoly wasn't one. Just because he'd been born in a Communist country didn't automatically mean he shared the Communist view point. Which he didn't. But speaking out against the government was dangerous, and Anatoly hadn't wanted to end up in jail, or worse. The KGB had eyes everywhere, and Anatoly had had a family to keep safe. Freddie was quick to call him a Communist, but that only showed that the American really was naive when it came to his political beliefs.

What did peak Anatoly's interest though was the mention of a natural history museum. That would be something he would visit, to learn about the discoveries made in the 30 years he'd just traveled. It might also be a place to take the girls, to teach them about the world. "A natural history museum? I would like to know where that is." He perhaps sounded like a geek, but he liked the pursuit of knowledge. He was an intellectual man, though he was also very literal about things. Always taking things literally was what made him awkward around people, but people either just ignored it or didn't talk to him.

Then Elle was asking if he was hungry. "No, I haven't eaten yet. Thank you for your kindness. I do have a little money, but it is not American currency, so it would not get me very far here." While anyone else might have chuckled after making that statement, Anatoly just simply gave another polite smile. He didn't like not being able to pay for things, but he would have to let it go for the moment since he didn't have any way of paying.

Anatoly was so polite. It reminded Elle a little bit of Sylar back before he had totally cracked, back when he was still only the man known as Gabriel Grey. She felt a little pang wondering if she’d ruin this guy like she’d ruined Gabriel, but concealed it pretty effectively with a small smile. This one was different, she reasoned. She wouldn’t have to worry about him going off and killing someone. Chess competitions sounded serious, but somehow she didn’t think there were too many fatalities in the game.

“Food first,” She nodded. “Then the museum. What are you hungry for?” There was a little gleam in her eye. It was impossible for a girl like Elle to ask such a question without a tinge of innuendo present. She was talking about food, though. What kind of food did people enjoy in Russia? Elle had been on a job, once, in a mostly Russian neighborhood. She remembered borscht which everyone there seemed to love. Elle had not been impressed with the stuff. “There are plenty of restaurants around here.”

One thing Anatoly had always maintained were his manners. Unless, of course, someone got under his skin, then his manners went right out the window. But he did prefer to be polite, most people got further in life with politeness than being rude. So far in this world, people were responding well. Anatoly was definitely still wrapping his head around the fact that things like demons existed here and were real dangers to them. It made him worry for his children and Svetlana. None of them were fighters, so he'd have to find a way to make sure that they all stayed safe.

The innuendo was lost on Anatoly, mostly because he was literal. That and his mind was more focused on getting to know his surroundings than paying attention to things like picking up innuendo. "I am not sure, actually. Perhaps we could just walk around until I smell something good? I am curious to see what kind of food is around here." He was curious as to what kinds of cuisine they had around here. Anatoly doubted there was a Russian restaurant, and truth was, he wasn't picky when it came to food. Whatever sounded good at the time he was hungry was pretty much fine with him.

It only took a moment’s thought to come up with the perfect place. Where does one go when they want a thorough sampling of culture and cuisine? The mall food court, of course. Elle flashed a smile, pleased with her idea, and nodded in the direction of her favorite shopping center in town.

“I think I know the perfect place.” She gave Anatoly’s sleeve a tug to make sure he was right there with her. She’d taken it upon herself to be his tour guide for the day. Her intentions weren’t the purest, of course, but to lose him would defeat her entire mission. Elle imagined that she’d probably catch hell, too, should she get him lost in the city.

“So, you’re from the 1980’s?” Elle looked up at him with an inquisitive looking playing on her features. “It must be kinda strange for you. Different time, new location... You do have a grasp on the language, though!” She chirped the last bit in a happy kind of tone. When she was still working for her father’s Company she’d been told that people warm up to you faster when you flatter them.

Anatoly gave her a small, slightly awkward smile. It wasn't that he felt awkward around her, he was just awkward in general when he wasn't around people he knew or talking or playing chess. His people skills had always been a little off, but Svetlana had found it endearing instead of thinking he was weird.

"Oh perfect." When she tugged on his sleeve, he promptly fell in line with her. He was still completely unaware of her true intentions, but he wasn't always good at reading people. He was taking this as a show of generosity, and he wouldn't turn that down. After all, Elle had been here longer than him, and knew the city. He would be a fool to turn it down.

"I am. It is very strange to me how different things are here, the technology mostly." When she commented about his use of English, he couldn't help but smile a bit, lifting a hand to scratch his head a little awkwardly. "Thank you. I had heard that English was hard to learn if it wasn't your native language, but I disagree with that. It came easily to me." He was smart, and had always done well when it came to learning things. After all, that's how he became so good at chess because Svetlana taught him well.

“Mm!” Elle swung one of the glass doors to the food court open, leaning back so that it would be open for Anatoly, as well. She took in a deep breath of that air so many scents lingered in. It was wonderful. Even she couldn’t help but smile a little. The food court had to be both heaven and hell for binge eaters with all of the various types of cuisine it had to offer. She glanced back at Anatoly, smiling all the while.

“They have just about everything, here. Sandwiches, pizza, salad, egg rolls, and I’m pretty sure that place over there,” She pointed across the concourse. “Is Mongolian barbecue.” She rubbed her hands together like one does when it’s cold outside and your hands need warmed up. “There’s a sundae bar for ice cream lovers over there.” Elle nodded in the direction of the desert shop. Being surrounded by fast food goodies was distracting her from her original motive.

“You must be pretty smart.” She smiled, meaning to charm him with praise. “I only know English and un peu de Francais, really.” Elle gave a tiny shrug.
