Who: Arriane Alter What: Arriane goes to a consignment shop and discovers the most divine footwear known to man. Where: a Lawrence consignment shop When: Early afternoon, present day
Consignment shops, Arriane had decided, were surely thought up by the man upstairs himself. She didn’t exactly have a steady job, so bargain hunting was a key part of her existence in Lawrence. Most of the time she was a pretty frugal girl, only buying things she needed like her grape Fanta, but this time she couldn’t resist the allure of a certain impulse item.
Those vintage rollerskates, sitting there on a table looking so tempting with the cheap gold disco glitter. She eyed them like a little kid eyeing a display of candy. Surely they were too good to be true! Slowly, she lifted one to examine it more closely and figure out what size feet the hot little numbers would fit on.
“Size eight, oh wow!” She gasped in delight and tucked the skates under her arm, toting them over to the cash register. “How much?”
“I just want to get the ugly suckers out of here. Three bucks.” The cashier clearly did not understand the true worth of the skates. Or at least how much they were worth to Arriane.
Arriane fished through her pockets, digging out two one dollar bills, some odd change, and a butterscotch hard candy. She tucked the candy back into her pocket for later consumption and slid the money to the cashier, absolutely beaming.
“Keep the change,” She grinned and was out the door, only to stop at a bench mere feet away from the shop.
It was like she couldn’t get her shoes off quickly enough. She kicked off her sneakers and stuck her argyle sock-clad feet into her new pair of roller skates. The gold glitter skates looked a little crazy on, but that was what she loved about them. With an enthusiastic ‘Woo hoo!’ she was off like a racehorse down the sidewalk. This was the start of something beautiful.
