Dinner was passing by quickly, his family talking all to each other. Anakin was quiet, of course he was. He didn’t want to be here, he didn’t want Tahiri in any proximity to the man that had twisted her mind. But Jacen was different now. He wouldn’t ever hurt Tahiri Veila here. He wouldn’t turn her to the dark side. Because he’d learned what that meant. What it cost him. In Jacen’s time here he’d grown to care about people outside of the very small nucleus of family that he had allowed himself to care about. Like his sister, his daughter, and of course the woman sitting beside him having a joke re explained to her for the third time. Beautiful and intelligent his Hapan Queen was but her sense of humour left much to be desired. But she wouldn’t laugh until she understood the joke. Never did. He waited until he heard the laughter follow the fourth explanation and finally hushed his family with a brush of Force Power, nothing offensive. Just getting their attention.
“So I lied” he began. Jacen Solo was quite the public speaker and this was the most important speech he had ever made. “I called you all here, invited you all for dinner so that we could all get together and be a family. And that has happened and that’s wonderful. It really is. But there’s something else as well.” he smiled turning to Tenel Ka. “...You. On this day to celebrate Mothers, I’m here to celebrate you. Because you make me everything I am now. Broken and flawed though you may have found me here. You didn’t let it phase you. You make it seem like its possible that I could actually become something worthy of you. That in spite of the darkness. Everything I’ve done...I can find solace in you. And the thing is Tenel Ka. I want to be able to do that for as long as we have in this place.”
He was somewhat of a traditionalist, and dropped to one knee. The ring box in his hand floating to an appropriate height for her to see. And then it opened to reveal a ring silver and entwining a stone the turquoise of her lightsaber.
“Marry me Tenel Ka Djo. We have a new future here. Lets live it
Jacen had gone overboard for this Earth holiday. Tenel Ka could say that confidently, but she honestly didn’t mind it. He was sweet when he was doing these little things for her. She could see more of the him that she fell in love with when Jacen was doing little things for her like that. When he had asked her if she would be okay with having a family dinner in lieu of a dinner with just the two of them it hadn’t been a difficult decision in the least. Though Tenel Ka Djo was not a member of his family by blood, she had always felt a kinship with them. She had liked the idea of a family dinner with all of them and easily agreed.
It was going much better than she had thought it would. Part of her worried about getting so many of them together in one place. It was far from a secret that there were....some differences between Jacen and other members of his family. The evening was going well, though. Perhaps it was the holiday that served as a buffer and had everything going smoothly thus far? Having a dinner that had so many of them here was absolutely a miracle. Tenel Ka was enjoying it while it lasted. She was enjoying speaking with everyone that had come to the dinner. She was even attempting to understand a joke that had been told. The redhead had never had a sense of humor that was like others, though she did have her own sense of humor. It took several tries before the joke made sense to her, but once it did, she laughed because it was what was expected of her. Somewhere in the back of her head, Tenel Ka couldn’t help but think that they should do this more often, or at least attempt to, and it was followed quickly by a brush from Jacen, gaining her attention.
She couldn’t help but smile at the fact that Jacen began to make a speech. This was him in a place that was wonderful. He seemed so much like he had before he had ended up a sith. She didn’t know what he had to say, but it couldn’t be bad with the general atmosphere that the dinner had carried thus far. TK was silent, watching Jacen calmly, or she was until he turned to her. t he turned to address her. A larger smile pulled at the corners of her mouth. He had so many good things to say about her, but Tenel Ka was not so sure that she was always deserving of them. She had made her share of mistakes, she had decided that he had to die (due to Alema) quite recently, and yet he still only managed to see the good in her. It had to be love. Despite being phased by who he was here, and the differences, Tenel Ka hadn’t been able to just let go because she loved Jacen. She fully believed that he could change and she was not going to give up. Her smile only grew, her eyes focused on Jacen...until he reached the end and moved to kneel on one knee. That definitely gave her a clue as to what he was up to.
As her eyes went to the ring box, Tenel Ka couldn’t help but feel her heart soar a bit. She was happy, more than happy, actually. The only reason that they had never done this before had been because of her position. Being here, being in Lawrence gave them chances that they never had before. The ring didn’t matter to the Hapan, though she did notice that it was beautiful. What mattered at the moment was that the man she loved wanted to spend whatever time they could together. He wanted to marry her. They did have a new future here and they both wanted to live it.
The redhead turned so that she was better facing Jacen and stated quite clearly, “Though you stated it rather than asked, I can think of nothing that would make me happier.” She nodded her head just lightly at the end of her statement to show without a doubt that she was accepting his proposal. This hadn’t been what she had thought would happen today in the least, but it was definitely a pleasant and amazing turn.
It took Jacen a moment to actually register the agreement. Tenel Ka had said she was going to marry him. In hindsight he supposed he had stated it. But he’d been in such a rush to get the words out that all his focus had been on the important parts. And of course the word marriage which was pretty much key to this whole thing. He knew that it would be regarded oddly. That people would probably try and warn her off because much as he was recovering, he was still dark. He was still lost. He was still the Sith Lord that had caused so much hurt to so many. Including her own family. He didn’t dare look at Anakin and Tahiri or even really his own family. He did spend a second or two focusing on his twin bond with Jaina but she’d been the one to really tell him to go for it and to ask her so he knew her opinion already. It was possible she hadn’t expected him to do it here. Like this. So publicly.
But all the same. Tenel Ka had agreed and she was going to marry him. Djo-Solo just had such a ring to it after all. He hoped so desperately that he could make her happy, and he vowed silently then that he would never stop trying to do so. He wouldn’t slip again. he couldn’t. Because slipping like that would only hurt her and how could he hurt someone so utterly beautiful and perfect to him. He finally spoke, his voice entirely devoid of its usual smug certainty. He was somewhat smug to be marrying her of course but mostly he was stuck on ‘entirely grateful she said yes’ He had finally done it and would finally marry the Hapan Queen. The one family member he finally looked at with a smile was of course the daughter they had created if not raised. Their Allana. This had to be just as crazy for her as for them but he’d asked her permission. As she had decided, A Hapan Female of suitable title to consent to the wedding.
He’d just asked his daughter.
Was it possible he had a family again, undeserved as it was. Was it possible Jacen Solo had gotten his life back. “...Thank you.” he told Tenel Ka at a soft whisper as he leaned in for an equally soft but by no means tame kiss from his fiancee. “Thank all of you for bearing witness, even if you weren’t entirely sure that you were doing so. I promise I’ll make her happy, and I trust you’ll all welcome her as the Solo she should have been years ago.”
