Who: Mulder and OPEN
What: ARRIVAL
When: Tonight
Where: the city
warnings: probably none
It was a cold day in Washington D.C. Even colder down in the basement of the J.Edgar Hoover FBI building where the FBI's most unwanted Fox Mulder's office lie tucked away. As usual Scully had beaten Mulder to work. Six A.M. sharp as though it were part of a mental game she liked to play. Beat him at his own game. Outwardly Mulder played it off as an annoyance, but secretly he enjoyed the competition. Despite that, he didn't even try to beat her time. Eight A.M rolled around when Mulder finally trekked down to the dimly lit shrine to the unknown and shoved open the door. There she was already hard at work. It was one of those things he let her have. It was something simple he could do for his partner to make her day. That was what a partnership was about, give and take. Everything had to give a little.
Even him. Scully had taught him that. He'd been so set in his ways when she was first pushed on him by the bureau. She taught him just how wrong his mindset had been and how useful she could be. Though he'd never admit it out loud, he was grateful to her. Having her in his life brought new meaning, new strength to his work and belief in the paranormal. She had initially been sent to him to debunk his ideas, to shut down the X-files but she did the opposite, and Mulder was well aware of it. So he strode into his office casually. As if he'd been sleeping all day long. His brows raised when he saw the glow of the television screen Scully had been focused on. "Whatever was in that VCR was not mine. " To which she turned to him and replied "Of course not. I put that one with all the others in your drawer that aren't yours. " She knew how Mulder worked, how humor defused his morning crankiness.
"This is a case that was sent to us from New Jersey. " Mulder leaned in over her shoulder and watched for half a second before moving away and to his comfortable leather chair behind his desk. "That does not belong on anyone's top five movie list. " He reached over to a bag of sunflower seeds that lie haplessly on his desk unopened and tore open the bag gently. Dipping his hand inside he popped a few into his mouth and crunched down on the shells. "They didn't blame this on the Jesey Devil too did they?" The tape playing was of a crime scene, Mulder knew he wasn't taking it seriously but average cases belonged to average agents.
"Mulder..." She looked over at him with annoyance at his frivolous attitude. "All right all right.." He gave her a slightly smug look and rolled his eyes as he leaned back in his chair with a cup of pencils and spit the sunflower seed shell into a near by trash can. Then he leaned forward against his desk to catch a better view of the video in question. "Wait, stop. What's that? Rewind that a second. " On one of the bodies there was a symbol carved into the victim's skin. Mulder jotted it down on a yellow sticky note . "What is that? " Scully finally sighed. "The reason this case was brought to us in the first place..they believe they have.." she paused and side eyed her partner. "Witches. Black magic. " Mulder's interest was already caught. "When do we leave?" He looked up with a grin. " Tonight. Go pack, my things are already here. " Mulder nodded and got up. That was the tedious thing about the job sometimes, he'd just arrived and now had to go back home.
"I'll meet you at the airport. " Mulder picked up his sunflower seeds, his wallet and badge, the file, and walked out of the office shutting the door behind him. He walked back up the stairs that lead to the main building, and exited. That's when he noticed the strange occurrence.
Washington D.C. was gone. As soon as his feet hit the side walk, the J.Edgar Hoover building was gone too. "...What the hell?" Everything had changed. Morphed into a college town. Everything was different. The side walks were cleaner, the street signs were fully functional and didn't jam traffic, even the feeling was different. Mulder picked up his phone and dialed his partner's number. Disconnected.
"What is this, Bizzaro world?"
Mulder stuck out in Kansas like a sore thumb. His government issue suit drew some eyes, so he headed for a coffee shop where he was lead to the boards and sat there fixated. Alternate universe. Aliens. Vampires, demons..it was all real.
Then he stopped for a minute. What would Scully do? Scully would be telling him first off to breathe, and secondly to be logical. Still his heart raced at the possibilities. He got up and left his computer station, walking back outside into 2011. Onto the bustling side walk and for a while he just stood there, soaking it all in. Was it the truth or was it a lie?
