WHO: Simon Tam and Kaylee Frye
WHEN: Backdated LIKE WHOA to just after Kaylee's arrival
WHERE: Complex lobby
WHAT: Simon doesn't know Kaylee is back. She doesn't know he's from just a little before she is.
STATUS: Incomplete
WARNINGS: Probably nothing too scary here

Simon sighed and put down the papers he’d been holding up next to the computer screen, then leaned backwards in his chair so that the joints in his lower back popped with the release of compressed air the hunched position he’d taken had built up. He’d spent the past few hours trying to transfer the hand-drawn sketches he’d done of River’s scans from Ariel onto the computer. From memory to paper to screen was leaving too much to chance though, too much lost in each step. He couldn’t help but think that his efforts to help River these days were useless, or worse than useless. She’d been making progress with Jacen and he’d begun to give up his belief that he had to bring back the River he remembered, the girl who had switched back and forth between wanting to be an astrophysicist and a dancer and who had smiled when he just said “be both mei mei.” She was nearly an adult now, would be by the standards of this world very soon, and he was happy she was asserting her right to that adulthood, at least in theory. He still hoped, however, that he could do something for her, could restore her amygdale somehow, and give her a release from the unrelenting emotions she felt as a result of the Alliance experiments. Then, at least, he could give her a choice, a chance to move beyond the life they lived now, even if she didn’t want to. The primitive earth technology he was forced to work with, however, wasn’t making it easy and sometimes he wondered if he should stop getting her hopes up, stop asking her to try the new medications he combined, just let her adjust as best she could…

He pushed his chair back from the computer abruptly and crossed the room to his coffee machine. When he found it empty, (Broken. Right, I’d meant to get that fixed he thought with absent frustration) he rolled his eyes at his own thoughtlessness and then, after grabbing his mug, headed out into the lobby. He’d get some coffee from the kitchen, answer some e-mails, do some paperwork, maybe put together a few first aid kits to distribute to some of the complex residents and then, when he didn’t feel quite so useless, he’d return to River’s scans. He’d find a way. He nodded absently to himself at the thought as he entered the lobby, eyes on his mug as if it were the most fascinating thing he’d ever seen, clearly deep in thought and unaware of the lobby around him.

Her expression fell quite a bit. Kaylee couldn’t help but get the impression that something was wrong. She interpreted all of it as him not being very excited to see her. It was a little confusing. The last time she had seen him, aboard Serenity, that is, they couldn’t get enough of each other. It had seemed like they’d gotten over the awkwardness and moved onto... Well, the sex.

“Oh,” Kaylee sounded a little glum. This was all so disappointing. Not the part about River being there, of course. It was nice to know that there was another crew member in this strange place. It was Simon. He’d probably moved on to someone else in the time they’d been apart, she decided. She was probably pretty and probably smarter. Kaylee already didn’t like this hypothetical woman.

Simon looked down at the mug he was now holding as if it were an atomic bomb and the fate of the world depended entirely on his ability to very carefully keep it still in his palms, brow furrowing with the disappointed puzzlement he would have liked to turn on Kaylee. Now that she'd gotten past the first shock of seeing someone from her own reality she was probably disappointed that it wasn't someone she knew better, Wash or Zoe or even Jayne. He knew Kaylee had feelings for him, it was hard to miss at times, they'd even talked about it after the drunken exploits in the town that inexplicably worshiped Jayne but, for fear of sounding like the heroine of a romance novel, he had never been sure of the nature of her feelings. She might want a quick lay in the engine room, she might be looking for something more, she might not even know which it was, and the thing about Kaylee was that he would never know until he just jumped in because she was very nearly the antithesis of rules. Simon had never been much good without rules, without knowing his role. He'd shown her his respect but he'd also offended her a thousand times and even if he could somehow take the crash course in social skills he'd somehow missed there was River, his growing responsibilities at the complex...

Stop staring at your hands like an idiot he told himself and raised his eyes again, giving her a strained attempt at a smile. "I was on my way to kitchen if you'd care to join me," he said as evenly as he could, "a break from paperwork. I've been managing the medical facilities here. You could join me if you like?" There, he thought, perfectly polite. Even if she'd rather have one of the others here I can at least listen to her, she probably has questions, something I can answer.

“Okay,” She smiled again, but this time the expression was a half-hearted shadow of a smile. What had she expected? For Simon to sweep her into a big, showy kiss? Kaylee mentally scolded herself for hoping for something so silly. From what she could tell, this place was a war zone and there was hardly ever any romance during wars. Maybe in the time afterwards, sure, but it wasn’t right to expect a kiss when everything else going on is so serious. She was worried. Was she being too quiet, now? What should she say? She spoke up more to fill the silence than to actually say anything of importance.

“I bet you’re real helpful.” Her voice quavered just slightly. That was dumb, she thought to herself. Why was this so awkward?
