[[Slowww replies, yes, still on slowatus till the 22nd or a bit after :)]] Ever since Martha had been sent back by the seal Simon's days had gone from hectic to...well there was no real word to describe the amount of things Simon had to get done in a given day but he recalled one of River's less charming faces that summed it up rather nicely. This had been compounded, recently, by the arrival of a teenager with a bullet to the stomach and her distinctly not orderly friends in his infirmary. He'd heard ominous noises coming from the area when he'd hurried in the door on his way home from work at the clinic but they hadn't sounded like emergency-noises and so he had decided to preserve his sanity, eat dinner, see his sister, and check on unruly and injured teens later. Despite the nearly superhuman drive his new schedule required, however, Simon was closer to happy than he had been in years. River was relatively safe and happy, getting better, actually improving with Jacen's help, he had his work, and Kaylee... but it was better not to get ahead of himself there.
So, instead of getting ahead of himself, he threw himself back into his work and left the apartment intending to go back down to the infirmary and check on Jennifer Check and a her cadre of bodyguards. Or, that was his intention until he reached the lobby. Simon had learned a great many life-lessons while aboard Serenity and one of them had been that a drunk Malcolm Reynolds was never a wise Malcolm Reynolds. A con artist-bride-stowaway had taught him that with rapidity, would have even if he'd had the intellect of Jayne. And here, pacing the lobby, was a clearly intoxicated Captain with a grin on his face that clearly said he thought he was about to something particularly clever.
For a moment Simon considered leaving him to it but he could practically see Kaylee's face if she found out he'd let anything happen to the Captain and so, with a deep and martyred sigh, he made his way across the lobby to where Mal was standing.
"Enjoying the complex scenery?" he asked dryly, giving the other man a quick once-over and trying to determine exactly how drunk he was.
