She gave a small shake of her head. “I hadn’t asked. It’s mostly been kept top secret.” Tish remembered that day when she’d figured out something was really wrong with her. She hadn’t so much as glanced in the mirror before going out for some fresh air. When passersby started to eye her strangely, that’s when she caught on that all was not exactly well. She’d never had to deal with anything like this before. Some people came from worlds with zombies or vampires or space travel, but she hailed from ordinary coastal California. Tish felt grossly unprepared.
“Animal blood felt right, for lack of a better word. I mean, I haven’t tried anything else, but it’s been the only thing that hasn’t totally turned my stomach.”
