It was definitely something she hadn’t expected to have work. And she was happy it had, of course she was. But who knew for how long it would. The best thing to do was to get on with the hunt. Burn the bones and move on from there. They’d make this place theirs if it killed her. And if those Hunters had their way then it really would. Ruby knew that Sam didn’t blame them. But irrationally she did. She couldn’t help it. She knew the logic behind what he thought but these people wanted to hurt them. Kill them. And she knew logic or not, Sam wouldn’t allow that. He’d feel he had to do what he could to stop them. And she knew that it was up to her to make sure Sam wasn’t forced to. She’d do it. She was the demon after all.
“I’m sorry I brought this on you.” Funny that. Back before their love she wouldn’t have cared, but now. Now she cared more than anything. She didn’t fight him on it being his fault. She knew how his mind worked. And she knew the things he had done, at her behest and at Meg’s. There was nothing Meg had had him do that she wouldn’t have done just the same if things hadn’t changed. If she hadn’t, as the demons called it. ‘Gone soft’. Yeah well she was happy to have gone soft. She watched Sam stab at the grass covered graves with his shovel, taking the anger out. “I see it from their side. I do. The one that broke the last seal and the demon whore that’s clouding his mind or messing him up or whatever it is? Its a wonder they haven’t come for us before now. In their eyes we’re monsters, worth nothing more than to be hunted. I do know how the hunter demon relationship goes. Usually anyway. We may have redefined it a little between us. Thing is though baby they can hate you all they want. They’re not going to hurt you. They’re not going to take you away from me don’t you get that yet?
And as he started to dig, there it was. The defensiveness. The harsh reality of what it meant to be married to a demon. Sam would kill those Hunters just as much as she would. He would shoot them down in cold blood because they had threatened her. “Let it be me. They expect it of me. I’ll make it quick for them. That’s better right? They’ll die knowing they tried to fight me. I’m not like other demons anymore, I don’t have the same weaknesses. They won’t expect me so if they do come you just let me know okay. Leave it up to me.” Her point made, Ruby grabbed a second shovel and joined her husband in digging. It actually was a lot more therapeutic than she had expected. It shouldn’t have surprised her.
She matched each dig he made, thinking at this rate it really wasn’t going to take them long at all. “We do what we have to do right?” she asked him, knowing that in theory, what they were doing, planning on killing those people. It wasn’t right. But it would happen like that if they came back because they had attacked them. “...I’ll make it quick.” she repeated, wanting nothing more than for Sam to comfort her, tell her they were doing the right thing by them. Tell her there was no choice. But she didn’t see that happening. She hated the things he had to change for her, the parts of himself he had to let slide into darkness. It wasn’t fair. It had never been fair but now of course she cared about it.
Digging. Keeping digging. That was the thing to do.
