Sam was expecting something worse to happen. For one of the two hunters to pull out an unexpected weapon, or for one of them to say something that would make either Ruby or himself snap. Rather than doing either of those things, the two did just as they were told. They backed off, they retreated - though not without making sure that Sam and Ruby weren't going to pursue them - and then, just like that, they vanished. No blood spilled and Sam couldn't help but wonder how that was possible. These weren't, for the most part, reasonable people. Once they found a target, that was it. They had to take it out. They were the monsters as far as those two were concerned. What kind of decent hunter would turn on their heel and run way from something like that, no matter how terrifying? Cowardly types, maybe, but not those two. Sam could tell, by the way they had been eying them. They would have stood and fought. So why hadn't they?
Just because they didn't decide to up and start war right then and there didn't mean that Sam's mood was in a wonderful place. Being confronted by something he feared - by being faced down by two people who considered him no better than the worst kind of monster - made him feel worse than he cared to admit. And if that weren't bad enough, the way that they'd reacted to Ruby certainly didn't make Sam feel much better either. The look he had on his face was a cross between confusion and outright anger, though Sam didn't utter a word about either emotion right away. Even as Ruby crept in close and rubbed at his arm for support, he glared out into the dark, waiting for something to happen. Would they come back? Were they hoping to try something again? Were they running off to grab their friends?
"No," Sam muttered, "they're not gone. They'll be back." He lowered his gun, but he didn't take his eyes off the direction that they'd retreated. "They're not gonna let something like you and me get away from them." Sam looked over at Ruby, finally, eyes betraying the confusion he was trying to bite down. He didn't say anything until after she kissed him, though, which was something he definitely needed, given his mood. "Why did they listen to you?"
