Who: Harry Potter
When: February 4, 2011
Where: London, England: Underground Cafe
What: Harry receives a sign from the universe that life doesn't have to suck.
Rating: PG
Harry had left his cell phone and laptop behind on purpose, knowing that if he had those items with him, he would be tempted to check in to see how Ron and Hermione were doing. He hated that he was probably worrying them, but he had needed this trip. He needed to feel a connection to something that felt familiar and, for awhile, knowing that Hermione and Ron were living nearby had been enough.
Until it wasn't.
So he had left for Europe, hoping that something would stir some feelings in him. Something other than feeling utterly lost, like he had been feeling since ending Voldemort's life. His life had always had a purpose, since as far as he could remember. When he had been younger, it had been to be the Dursleys' whipping boy. When he had gone to Hogwarts, it had been to defeat Voldemort. They were not happy purposes, yes, but they had been something. Coming to Lawrence had left him with any direction.
He sighed as he looked over the day's paper as he sat in a cafe right off the Underground. He had been visiting the cafe for a few days now, it being the only thing that he had found to be exactly the same as it had been in his world. It was the same cafe that Dumbledore had retrieved him from to go visit Slughorn. Privet Drive wasn't the same, Hogwarts was nowhere to be found in Scotland, and King's Cross had no hidden platform to speak of. He hadn't expected any of it to be there, but to know it now for sure...had been disappointing. More than disappointing.
It had been devastating. So he sat in the cafe every day, hoping that something would happen. Today would be that day.
"More tea?" Asked a waitress as she stopped by Harry's table.
Harry almost didn't look away from the paper, ready to just brush her off with a no thank you. But for some reason, he lifted his head and froze, mouth half open to say something. With an audible click, he closed it. He didn't know if the universe was trying to mess with his mind or if this was just some great big cosmic coincident, but it was the same waitress from the cafe back in his world. The one who he probably would have had a proper date with, had Dumbledore not shown up. But before he could say anything to her, her eyes widened and said, "Bloody hell, aren't you Daniel Radcliffe?"
Harry flushed. "Er, no. But I get that a lot." Impulsively, he blurted out, "Yes please. To the tea. And maybe your mobile number?"
The girl, who had been all ready to start asking him how it was like to be a famous actor, giggled. "We'll see," she said with a wink, pouring him more tea and walking away. Harry watched her go before shaking his head in amazement.
Okay, so that was definitely a sign.
Harry smiled.
