Elena Gilbert is a hero for the lost cause ([info]naturaldisaster) wrote in [info]wariscoming,

Who: Elena and Spike
What: Elena needs to escape Galinda so she's wandering.
When: January 6, Early Evening
Where: Around Lawrence
Warnings: None at the moment
Status: In Progress

Elena liked Galinda. Really, she did. There was just was only so much hyperactivity she could take before the brunette found herself wanting to run and hide. And with Galinda being all proud of the loft and bonus room that she'd claimed as her own... well, Elena had been roped into helping decorate and then sat through a lecture on architecture at high speed. Thankfully, Galinda had then set her sights on Elphaba and Elena had been free to escape. She wanted to curse, Jacen was it? Well, whoever it was that had mentioned coffee to the bubbly blond. That woman didn't need caffeine. She was doing just fine without it.

Walking out of a bookstore with Wicked in hand for Damon, Elena waited at the crosswalk until it was her turn to go and crossed the street. Honestly, Lawrence wasn't terrible. The city itself was nice enough, plenty of young people and shops, which meant Elena had also been putting in applications for work while she waited for Ron to get back to her about the job he said he might be able to get her. While Elena knew that bad things would happen, perhaps things worse than Mystic Falls if that were possible, she wanted some sort of normalcy in her life.

Finding a cafe, the brunette went in and got a cup of tea (after Galinda, she doubted she'd ever go near coffee again) and went to sit outside and people watch. It hurt, seeing couples all happy and cozy together. She missed what she and Stefan had, yes, but it had been her decision to end it and her decision to keep it ended when the threat of Katherine was taken care of. After all, they hadn't known about Klaus at the time. They could have been blissfully unaware... but she had wanted to keep it ended anyway. The question was why? Perhaps being here would give her the answers she sought. Or so she could hope.

The evening was young, which meant that, for Spike, his 'day' was only just beginning. He had a decent sized list of priorities set out before himself - stock up on more blood, raid the complex kitchen for free booze, catch up on all the important news by way of the apocalypse and all that fun stuff that he missed while he was sleeping the sun away - but there was something specific that the vampire had to take care of first. An early errand, one that Spike needed to accomplish if he wanted to get his blood sorted out for the week. The butcher he bought it from didn't sell it cheap and even with the give 'em hell attitude Spike carried about him, even he knew better than to bite the hand that fed him. Least he didn't do that anymore. Lately. Much. Soul and all, kept him from terrorizing the innocent-like. They were lucky.

The not so innocent that screwed with him though? Not so much. That important mission of his had an awful lot to do with a man who owed him fifteen hundred dollars. He'd been dodging Spike for a while, rather pointedly so, but Spike had sharp ears and enough wits about him to figure a few things out on his own. Tracking down Ralph had been real easy. Learning his nightly routine? Even easier. All he had to do was ask around, threaten the right people - that sort of thing. It didn't take long for Spike to learn the when and where; took even less time for him to map out how he was going to shake his cash out of the man. First, he'd threaten him. Then, if that didn't work, he'd show him exactly why the people back home had taken to calling him Spike.

Minus the mass murdering. Probably. Maybe.

The when and where happened to be exactly where Elena was lodged now. The cafe was more of a passing product of what Spike was focused on - there was a bar a few stops over, one that Ralph was supposedly doing business in that evening - but it was convenient looking enough for him to dub his waiting ground until Ralph decided to pay the scene a visit. Since Spike had no need for what the establishment served inside, he walked over to a spot on the front outside wall, reached into his leather duster, and tugged out a cigarette. Leaning back against brick, he popped the cigarette between his lips, lit it up, and puffed on the end of it. Smoke was quick to litter the air, inconveniently - for Elena, at least - blowing downwind to the very spot in which she was seated. If Spike noticed, he didn't seem to care much. He kept on puffing away, as if his act of potentially forcing cancer down the young woman's throat wasn't a matter of importance in the slightest.

The night was young and the air was crisp, which meant that her tea was greatly appreciated for the warmth it provided. After all, there was nothing like tea, or hot chocolate, on a cold winter night to warm you right up and make your skin flush. Or so Elena thought at least. Presently, the brunette was reading from a copy of Angels in America she had purchased along with Wicked when her air was violated.

Coughing, Elena looked up and looked for the perpetrator. She had taken it upon herself to learn about the city she was currently residing in, and one such law? The smoking ban, which this jerk was obviously in violation of. But it was possible he was new and just didn't know, so for now, Elena would be polite. Closing her book after marking her spot, the Virginian moved to the vampire and cleared her throat.

"Excuse me, but smoking's illegal here." Well, she was polite at least. After all, he could be new, from the Seal or just new in general. No need to get snippy with him.

Still no sign of the greasy bastard. Spike shifted boredly against the wall, blue eyes flashing away from the bar and outward, toward the open road. Traffic was slow. There were a few people milling about up and down the street, but none of them recognizable. At least, none of them were terribly recognizable until a voice piped up from an incoming party, one that Spike vaguely recalled. Had he slept with her, maybe? No, no - she was someone he'd worked with before. Or, wait, she could have been one of the arrival-types, someone that he had seen around the complex, possibly. Her scent was certainly one that he'd picked up before. Just not one that he'd spent much time fussing over. Slightly interested, though less so in what she was saying, Spike raised a scarred brow, took another drag from the ol' cancer stick poking out of his mouth, and shrugged carelessly. Smoke streaming from between his lips, Spike opened his mouth and simply said, "Yeah. So?"

Sticking to the no smoking policy really wasn't at the top of his to-do list. Spike had been harassed by the pigs a few time because of his obvious disinterest in following the law, but they hadn't been much of a problem for very long. They didn't take too well to men with distorted faces, fangs, and the tendency to break limbs, it seemed. Ah, well.

"Don't I know you from somewhere?" Spike squinted down at Elena, considering her carefully. No, he didn't sleep with her, that was for sure. It definitely didn't much seem like she was someone he worked with either. So, what was it, then? The apartment complex?

Okay. So much for the new in town theory. Or he was and just didn't care. Honestly, his demeanor was similar to Damon's. Not caring about the world at large, just his own self interests. Though Damon's was a mask, who knew about this guy. Well, one thing was certain, she wasn't about to have him pollute her air.

Acting as she had when Jeremy had his drug problem, Elena stepped forward, eyes narrowed as she reached up and plucked the cigarette from Spike's lips and dropped it on the ground, crushing it out with her foot. Honestly, was it so hard for people to have any common decency and concern for other people? Everyone was so self entitled and acted as though the law didn't apply to them.

"Put it out." Smiling sardonically, Elena crossed her arms, brows raised. Of course, she had no idea what Spike was, but after everything she'd been through in Mystic Falls, a vampire just didn't scare her. Well. Klaus and Katherine didn't count.

"And not that I know of." Elena would definitely remember someone like Spike. So it was probably that Katniss person Damon had initially mistaken her for. Unless he knew Katherine, and then, well... then she was in a bit of trouble.

Spike couldn't help the scowl that overtook his features when Elena snatched his cigarette away and disposed of it, doing so before Spike could so much as utter a single word. If it had been anyone other than a tiny, young woman, Spike probably would have punched her. He'd have taught her one hell of a lesson, if only to prove that he wasn't one to be screwed around with. But, because she had the advantage of being young and small and clearly naive, Spike straightened up, pointed a finger at her, and said, "You might want to think about who you're bossing 'round and stealin' from, sweetheart."

He had seen her somewhere before. The face was starting to come back to him, a little bit. It was merely the where that had Spike stumped. Out and about, was it? Whatever the case, he wasn't all too sure he wanted to know her. Between the bitching about the smoking and the destruction of his cigarette, Spike got the feeling that they weren't going to be getting on very well.

"Probably for the best," Spike muttered, raking a hand through his bleached hair with a glare. "Last thing I need is a bitch like you around to give me a hard time about doing something that every man should have the right to do. Smoking's been around for hundreds of years, sunshine. It's not gonna stop just 'cause the government wants to focus on petty nonsense rather than things that are actually important."

Elena knew she was in a dangerous place. She knew that she could be dealing with a demon. But she sometimes seemed to have a death wish, so really? She had no qualms with bossing Spike around. After all, so far he was just an annoying jerk. Nothing supernatural, though there was always that risk. But no matter. So instead she just rolled her eyes.

"Right."

And then Spike was going on about how men had the right to smoke and she started to tune him out. Yes, he had a valid point. There were more important things to worry about than smoking, but still, it was a vile habit. Though they could have made a compromise she supposed. Twenty feet from an entrance of a building, inside, etc.

"So sorry I enjoy breathing. I don't care if you smoke in your house or whatever. And you're right, there are more important things that law could be focused on, but it's still in the state law."

"Do you honestly think I'm the type of person who cares about the state law?" Spike reached into his jacket, already prepared to pick out another cigarette and start smoking all over again. If Elena tried to steal away his cigarette this time, he wouldn't be so polite. "If the law was so right and just, I'd be the one making them. Been around ten times longer than any of those over-sized, spectacle wearing idiots anyway." He squeezed his cigarette between his lips again, but didn't light it up right away. Not yet. "This place is supposed to be a 'free country', right? Or are they changing that up too? Man can't smoke outside, he might as well not smoke anywhere."

Arguing with this girl probably wasn't going to do Spike much justice by way of keeping watch for old Ralph, but he really couldn't help himself here. She'd taken away his cigarette. No one took away his cigarettes.

"Why don't you do yourself a favor and go back to your little table, drink your coffee, and leave me to it? Unless you've got a badge on you someplace, that tells you that you've got the right to enforce the law on a person, I really don't think that there's much you can do to stop me." Except steal away his cigarette again. Which Spike was hoping to avoid letting her get away with from now on. She was a bit ballsy for a tiny girl though, he'd give her that. Walking up to a total stranger and snatching their smokes away under the rule of law? Definitely took courage. Didn't make her any less annoying, however. Spike didn't like annoying do-gooder types. They made him think of Angel.

It was official. He was a more annoying version of Damon. Definitely a more annoying version of Damon. Seriously, she hadn't felt this annoyed since she had first met the elder Salvatore and for some time after until she got to really know him. Somehow though, she doubted she'd be making the same sort of friendship with Spike. Vaguely she was aware of him saying he'd been around ten times longer but it didn't register. Or Elena ignored it. Either or.

"It may not be right or just, but it's still the law." Arms uncrossing, Elena placed her hands on her hips, brow lofting as he told her to go back to her table. She could do that. Hell, she probably should do that, but Elena had a tendency to do stupid things at times. And she'd catch hell for it from Bonnie, Caroline and Damon no doubt. But no matter.

Without another word, Elena took Spike's cigarette, looking at him challengingly. Seriously, what was he going to do? It may be dark out, but there were still people around for the most part.

Right, so. Polite approach was definitely on the outs. Spike couldn't insult her and be done with it (yes, that was the polite approach, thank you very much). It seemed that he'd have to put a little scare in the girl to make her leave him alone, which he found he was perfectly fine with. A small bout of quick entertainment before he went in and dealt with business was all fine by him, so long as he took care of it before Ralph popped by. Last thing he needed was for the son of a bitch to spot him and take off in the other direction before Spike got a chance to confront him. Knowing people in general, he was pretty sure that this wouldn't take much time. He'd show her his teeth, she'd go running in the other direction screaming, then he could get right back to doing what he was before - lounge on the wall, smoke his cigarette in peace, and wait for his money to make it's appearance at the bar across the street.

Pushing away from the wall, Spike's features began to shift into something completely unnatural. His forehead grew ridges, his eyes turned yellow, and his teeth sharpened into long, pointed fangs. Spike wasn't the picture idea of a vampire - he certainly wasn't pretty - but his appearance was unnatural looking enough to scare, easily. In fact, as he growled in an animal-like manner, several people began to scream and scatter, all horrified by the monster that had sprung out of the bleached man.

"Do you really think that the law applies to someone like me?" Spike snapped, reaching forward to snatch his cigarette back away from her. "Do you really think they'd be able to do much about me tearin' your pretty, little head from your body, let alone me smoking in the bleeding streets?"

Okay, so the transformation wasn't exactly as she was used to with Caroline, Damon, Katherine and Stefan. But he had the fangs, which made him a vampire. Which to Elena? Completely normal. So while everyone seemed to scatter, the brunette stood her ground, blinking some. Oh, Damon would give her hell if he found out she antagonized another vampire, but it was Elena, it seemed to be what she did.

"So, you're a vampire. Am I supposed to be scared?" Sighing, Elena looked up at the sky in exasperation before fixing her look back on Spike, not even balking at his transformed appearance.

"Just because you're a vampire doesn't mean you're above the law. When people from other countries visit, they have to follow the laws of the country they're in. Same rule applies here." And that was all there was to it in Elena's mind. Yes, she was in danger, but she had a feeling that Spike wouldn't act on his words. He seemed to be more talk than action.

He expected her to scream. Shout. Call him a monster. Possibly even attack him out of fright, before fleeing and joining the rest of the retreating, horrified crowd. Rather than doing so, the girl instead chose to belittle him. Spike didn't know if he was supposed to be impressed or infuriated by the reaction. In the end, he found himself nothing more than surprised. He shouldn't have been terribly so, considering this world was sort of filled with beings who knew all sorts of things because of where they were from in their own expanded little universes, but Spike hadn't been expecting her to outright react this way. Mouth falling open, if only for the briefest of moments, Spike furrowed his disfigured brow, brought a hand up to the back of his neck, and muttered, "Well, bullocks."

No, no, no. He wasn't going to let her win this one. He was a vampire and she, as far as he could tell, was still just a girl. "I'm not just a vampire. I'm William the Bloody - Spike - the biggest bad there ever was. Killed a handful of Slayers in my time and more people than you could begin to imagine, all in different ways, all in plenty of places. Like in front of cafes. Like this one." Spike leaned forward, smiling cruelly. "You look like you'd taste good. All that attitude and bravery in you, I expect you'd go down real nice." She probably would. Spike always had a real knack for picking out niblets here and there that were plenty appetizing. Elena had the right look for it. A couple years back, he probably would have sank his teeth into her right then and there without a single care in the world.

He wasn't that vampire anymore though. Not since he'd gotten his soul which, at this moment, he was very much cursing to high hell. Times like these, when there were annoying people that he just wanted to rip apart around, he found he really wouldn't have minded it so much if he'd have been able to get away with killing innocent people without feeling so horrible about it afterward.

If Elena was something, it was stupidly brave. She had no qualms angering the wrong people and getting herself into trouble. She stood up for herself and no one was going to make her back down. Especially not a talkative vampire who seemed rather disappointed in her reaction. It was actually quite funny when he was all Well, bollocks. Elena managed not to laugh, though. That would be rude.

And then Spike was monologuing at her about how he was so bad and evil and trying to scare her. It was rather sad, really. After all, he may have been that person at one time, but obviously he wasn't anymore. Even Damon didn't boast about how he was all top shit in the evil department. This guy must have some serious confidence issues.

"Impressive. But all you're doing is talking at me, so I'm guessing that was the past and you're not him anymore."

Spike's expression fell, briefly. Really? She wasn't going for the big bad speech? Most everyone went for the big bad speech. It was big. And bad. There was a lot to be had from it, honestly. Puffing out his chest proudly, Spike shuffled from one foot to the other, shot a quick glance down either side of the street, then said, "The only reason you're still standing here is 'cause I'm tryin' to lay low is all. Don't want anyone chasing after me here, where I've gotten all nice and cozy." Spike sniffed at that, fingers raking through his silver hair as if there were nothing more to say about the matter. Features shifting back into a smoother, less terrifying state of being, Spike folded his arms over his chest once more and leaned back against the brick wall again.

"Girl like you should be scared of a vampire," Spike muttered, almost grumpily. "Back where I come from, if someone like you goes 'round questioning the effectiveness of a vampire..." He whistled lowly and shook his head. "You'd be dead. Tortured for a bit first, if you really fucked with the wrong fang." Inwardly, he couldn't help but wince at the way he was going on at the young woman. Years ago, he really would have ripped her in half, no questions asked. Dru would have been real ashamed if she were here to see him now. That natural, more animal part of himself missed the freedom that came with being without a soul. He could kill whenever he wanted, eat whoever he wanted, and he didn't have to put up with smart-mouthed girls like Elena in the slightest. 'Course, that didn't mean that Spike wasn't glad to be carrying the unfortunate weight of being all morally conscious and whatnot around, but still. Freedom was freedom, no matter how twisted.

Elena almost felt bad for Spike. Almost. But honestly, she didn't see the point of going around and acting like tough shit. At least Damon had calmed down in that regard. And Stefan never really did that. Of course, neither had her captors. They had just... kidnapped her for some unknown reason involving an Original. But somehow, Elena doubted Spike would answer her questions on what an Original was, especially as he was a different breed of vampire than Damon and Stefan. Meaning, he might not know in the first place. Or he might decide to take her to the Original himself for her mouthing off at him.

Well, it wasn't really mouthing off. It was just.. being her. Couldn't blame a girl for staying true to herself, now could you? Well, some could and would, but that was irrelevant. Elena didn't care about that. She just wanted her answers. But the one good thing was that he wasn't smoking anymore. Which really was all she cared about.

"I'll count my blessings, then." Okay, so she was slightly sarcastic, but that didn't matter! Elena just... she was going stir crazy. And hiding from overzealous blonds. Those were scary. Really scary at that. Far more scary than a vampire if Elena were to be honest with herself.
