Who: Bella Swan & Ruby
When: December 5, 2010
Where: Lawrence, Kansas: Apartment Complex Courtyard
What: It's snowing and it reminds Bella of her mother, happier times, and the men in her life. So she goes outside to build a snowman.
Ratings: PG

Bella had never really gotten into Christmas when she had lived in Forks, though she remembered how enthusiastic her mother could be about the holiday. She would decorate the house and have Phil hang up lights outside, even if it never really snowed in Phoenix, Arizona. Though contrary to popular belief it did snow if you went a little further north up to Prescott, but she could remember countless snowless Christmases in Phoenix with her mother.

They were happier times. Then she had moved to Forks and a smile out of her then was rare, rarer than it had been back in Phoenix where she had no friends. It was only now that she had five years of memories from the future, five years of time, to understand how volatile and how abusive her relationship with Edward had been, that she was able to finally put that time to rest and move on with her life.

It was why she had told Jacob that she loved him. She wasn't so naïve anymore and knew that the two of them had their issues, but they were workable issues, issues that a lot of normal people had. And she loved him, not because he fascinated her or wowed her with magical abilities. She loved him for how normal he was, how he could make her laugh and smile without even trying.

They weren't perfect, sure, but he made her smile again.

Smiling now as she pressed her forehead against the window in her room, she watched the snow fall outside. Snow might remind her of Forks, but it reminded her of her mother and the fun times they had during Christmas more. It reminded her of Charlie, trying his best to make her feel like Forks was her home too. Turning away from the window, she dug through her wardrobe until she found the jacket she had bought when she had returned to this time. Pulling it on and finding her gloves and hat, she went outside to build a snowman.

Ruby had never just appreciated snow, or any weather really. It had never occoured to her to find the simple joy in life, in the earth. It was just something that was there. A part of the world. Frozen water falling and resting on the ground. But she'd seen the excitement of Bella on her post on the network and it had appealed to her. She was learning to think like a human right. Maybe silly things like this were a part of it. Maybe she was supposed to be this person. And if she admitted it to herself, the snowman sounded fun. She drove to the complex, the same way she always did, glaring at the building itself as she got close enough to park up her car. She'd never been inside and probably never would be. Those protections could never come down. It was just how it had to be.

But this could take her mind off the reasons why. The apocolypse. The craziness. Azazel. Everything that had been playing on her mind. This white fluffy stuff could just be there for building snowmen and throwing at each other and it could be a lot of fun.

She saw Bella already out in the snow and went to join her, marvelling at the simpleness of this thing that could turn adult humans into complete kids just by there being enough of it to sculpt things out of. "Hey" she said with a grin coming up to the girls side dressed warmly like Sam had insisted. Which was sort of adorable. What was she going to get a cold? She was a demon. But she thought she might have attracted attention wearing less than three layers on a day like this. "So...what do I...y'know...do?" she asked the girl looking down at the snow and wondering should she roll some of it into a ball. Was that how it worked? She'd gone and looked up pictures of snowmen on the internet and hoped they were going to stick to the simpler kinds. Body, head, carrots.

Oh!

"I brought a carrot, and an old scarf" she said holding up a bag with a shrug. "Will that help?"

Bella had been hard at work before Ruby had arrived, having been out there for about twenty or so minutes already. Her cheeks were pink and she was already sniffling, but she was having the time of her life, rolling snow into a large ball for the base of her snowman. The bottom of the three balls that would go into making her snowman was already at her knee's height, though it was horrible misshapen and in dire need of a few extra rolls across the yard until it rounded out. She was pushing the ball across the yard when she heard Ruby, smiling as she looked over her shoulder at the demon.

Truth be told, Ruby had frightened her at first. Vampires and werewolves she could handle, but demons were an entirely different ball game and she hadn't been equipped so well for it. It didn't matter though because after a few weeks at the complex (and some time in the future), she had come to trust Ruby not to kill, maim, or torture her, like demons were prone to do. It helped that Ruby acted like any other human, which put Bella at considerable ease being around her now.

"Hey," she said, returning the greeting with a small wave. Her glove dripped with slush, which she flung away as she shook her hand to get rid of it. "Well, you could start rolling another ball of snow. We still need his middle and head!" She explained cheerfully, having kept her word to not build the entire snowman without Ruby. "I brought a hat for him," she added, gesturing to a nearby bench that had a hat with a red pom pom on top of it and some rocks that Bella had dug out of the snow for its smile and eyes.

"What do you think we should name him?" Bella had started to roll the base around again, in hopes that it would start resembling a ball soon.

Ruby hadn't been aware of the amount of effort that seemed to go into building these things but she wasn't afraid of hard work. Still, Bella seemed to be working on a base for it, the bottom bit. She didn't understand how a ball of snow like that would be formed but nonetheless it was being formed, so the demon she to work on her own one, pulling the snow toward a focus point with her power. Which was probably cheating on some level but it was only to start. She'd push it around once there was enough of it to push, she thought, logic didn't come into the creation of snowmen.

"I'll do the middle bit. It's supposed to be smaller than your part, right? Much smaller? Or how does this work?" she asked as she watched Bella roll the other giant ball of snow around. She was pretty sure the girl knew what she was doing. She seemed to anyway.

"He gets a hat?" she asked, a little amused at the concept. "That's kind of cute. You do realise with every second I'm out here my reputation as scary goes down a notch. I'm blaming you for that" she joked before Bella confused her even further. Name it? "It gets a name?" she questioned still with that same, semi puzzled semi enchanted smile. What did one name a snow man? If she didn't like the girl as much as she did she'd call it Edward or something. But Bella seemed much more sensible than the girl she'd heard about from the movies. She had just had a bad time of it by all accounts. "Timmy" she said with a shrug, honestly picking the name out of the air. She was sure she'd known a Timmy in her long life, probably several and she'd probably not been very nice to any of them.

"...We could call it Timmy?"
