He was a puppet.
What was worse was that he was a puppet in the middle of Kansas.
Angel had plenty of experience with bad days to know that this one was about to get worse. He could feel it in his felt stuffed body and it set his soft teeth on edge. It was made worse by the fact that he had no idea what was going on. Normally, he had an idea about what was going to happen because he had prophecies coming out of his ass. This time though? He didn't even have an inkling. All he could remember last was walking with Nina toward someplace that would serve a puppet breakfast and telling her that his puppet condition was only temporary. He was going to be changing back to normal, but the matter of when really couldn't be clarified beyond 'soon.'
Soon. He hoped that soon meant in the next ten minutes because he was in a new city with no way of investigating what was going on in this form. Being a puppet? Sucked for that.
The only reason he even knew he was in Kansas was the fact that he was under a huge sign that proclaimed "Welcome to Lawrence, Kansas! We hope you enjoy your stay!" Now if only the sign would have said, "So-and-so decided to mess with you by teleporting you to Kansas. Here's how you can get back to L.A. and get revenge." But life was never that easy and he resigned himself to pulling out his felt cellphone and dialing number after number, when the first one didn't work.
After about ten minutes of this, he gave up on trying numbers that didn't work and hoping that he would magically turn back to normal on his own. So he set out from the long grass surrounding the welcome sign toward the lights of what looked like to be a city.
It was early evening, but in the winter that meant that darkness had already fallen, which made hiding from people easier, and the streetlights had come on, which made hiding a little more difficult. There weren't too many people out on the streets, but restaurants and shops were still open at that time and Angel could hear the laughter of countless humans in the buildings surrounding him as he did his best to stealthily walk the streets. It made him nervous because that meant any minute, someone could walk out in front of him from any of the occupied buildings and he had only a few seconds of warning to run for cover if that happened.
Unfortunately that exact scenario happened. A group of laughing restaurant patrons started to step out of a Chinese place in front of him. Gasping almost comically, Angel made a split second decision to duck into the shop next to him, which he didn't hear a lot of heartbeats from. He shut the door behind him and pressed back against the door, until he heard the group passing. Letting a sigh of relief out, he started to relax before he took in his surroundings. Almost as soon as he realized where he was, he started to scowl.
He was in a toy shop.
Just as he was about to escape back outside, a toddler wandered by in front of him. Going still, he prayed that she kept on going...only to internally curse when the little girl wandered back a few seconds later and stared at him. He stared back, hoping she would lose interest quickly. Instead, she raised her hand and pointed at him, before opening her mouth wide.
"MOMMA I WANT THIS ONE!"
Fuck. His. Life.
