Nothing you can't do. She was always saying that. Always telling him that he was strong and that he could accomplish things. Sam found that he enjoyed it, even if his reactions to her comments were usually very subtle. It was a boost in that confidence that always seemed to be dipping lower and lower. Ruby changed that. She made him feel like he could do a lot of things, even if logically he knew that they weren't possible.
He kept one arm around her, holding Ruby close while his free hand eased down the side of her face and into her hair. Sam pushed his fingers through the dark waves quietly, debating on the safest way to make her feel a little more at ease. Temporarily. He knew it wouldn't last forever.
"I'm right here," Sam said gently, looking into her eyes. They were red. From the crying. Not some demonic, deal-making red. No, there wasn't anything demonic about Ruby right now. She was hurting, she was in pain, and she was lost. All those things that, no matter how much anyone might argue it, Sam saw as human. Ruby wasn't willing bringing these feelings on and he knew that she'd probably never let them show if there wasn't a ghost involved in all of this somehow, but seeing her this way, as horrible as it was, was a reassurance. There wasn't some cold, dark thing curled up inside that body. No. What he was seeing here was more than that.
"Don't be afraid." He was hoping that this wouldn't backfire on him. If he acted and she did fear that he was going to turn on her, it was only going to make everything worse. At the moment though, Sam was willing to try. He only hoped that she trusted him enough to stay calm. With an attempt at being as soothing as possible, Sam ran his fingers through her hair again as he reached out with his mind and tried to find what was inside of the body in his arms. He had done it before. Sam was hoping with all his might that he'd be able to do it again without screwing up.
