WHO: Sam & Hermione
WHAT: Chatting.
WHEN: Late afternoon.
WHERE: Just outside of Adam's old house.
RATING: Nothing terribly high, I'd say.

A hunt, especially one with so many emotional attachments, really did take a lot out of a person. No, Sam hadn't come all the way out to Wisconsin to hunt down ghouls dressed up like himself and his mother, but seeing a ghoul that looked just like Adam (who Sam was finally beginning to accept into his life) had left him pretty shook up. Adding that onto everything else that he'd had weighing on his shoulders and Sam found that he really needed to take a break. As soon as things had settled from the hunt, in fact, Sam took the first opportunity that he could find for himself to slip off onto the back porch for a quiet moment alone. Pulling up the collar of his jacket, Sam carefully shut the back door behind himself and moved across the porch. His boots clunked against the wooden panels underneath him, Sam walked over to the steps and sat down at the very top of them all. Fingers locking together, he propped his elbows onto his knees and leaned forward, attention shifting away from the hunt they were wrapping up and focusing on...well, other things.

Mostly Adam. He was worried for him. Being out here, back in his old home where he had been killed alongside his mother wasn't easy. It couldn't have been. Sam wished he knew what to do or say to make the trip easier for the younger man, but he honestly didn't. Sam had been in his shoes before. He'd lost everything, once. Sometimes no matter how genuinely hard people tried, there wasn't anything that could be done about the pain. Adam didn't need speeches declaring that everything would be okay someday; telling him that he'd deal and move on. Some people didn't deal. They didn't move on. The most that Sam could do was offer his support - he would be there to help Adam out as much as he could, even if Adam didn't want him to be.

Sighing, Sam reached up and raked his fingers through his dark hair. It needed to be trimmed. The only reason that Sam hadn't bothered taking a pair of scissors to it yet was because he was pretty sure Ruby would kill him for it. Sam smiled faintly at the thought, one hand reaching for his jacket pocket. He dipped his fingers inside, wrapping them around the box that he'd picked up from Eliot before his departure from Lawrence. Soon. He'd ask her soon.

"He seems to be okay. I'm concerned it's all being put on, but I'm sure he'll say if he really needs to talk."

She was worried for him, but she was use to men bottling their true feelings up. Her best friend was Harry after all, and he was good at hiding things at times. Though she knew when he was; had come to notice the signs after their years of friendship. But she really liked Adam and was willing to wait for him to show what he needed from her other than the practical things.

She moved to sit next to him when he questioned her on her own feelings about this. Yes it was weird, but so was entering the wizarding world for the first time. She could handle weird. Even if this was slightly different and a little overwhelming if she was truthful.

"It is. But I guess it comes with Adam, so I have no problem dealing with these sort of things."

She'd seen a lot in her own life back home anyway.

"You really care about him, huh?" Sam squinted off at Hermione as she sat down, scooting over a little to ensure that she had plenty of room to comfortably join him. "What do you see in him, exactly?" Sam hadn't meant for that statement to come out that way. It almost seemed like, to him, he was trying to say that Adam wasn't good enough for her or something. That was hardly the case. Sam ran a hand through his hair and tried again. "I mean, why are you still hanging around this mess of a family when you could be someplace else? Someplace better? We're hardly the picture idea of perfect here." He didn't think Hermione expected perfect, but he did know that most people in their right mind wouldn't want to be a part of this family, nor would they want to bother getting close with them. They all had this annoying tendency to end up dead one way or another. And if they didn't end up dead, their loved ones did. Hermione really had no idea what she was getting herself into, did she?

Sam didn't think he had to clarify that he didn't mind her being her. Sam liked Hermione. He used to admire her when he read the books back when he was younger, so her presence was more positive than most others would have been if they were standing her shoes right now. Still, Sam didn't want to see Hermione get hurt. With his mind on the recent discovery of Brady being the one to kill his last girlfriend, Jessica, and with their recent ghoul hunt only just out of the way, he really couldn't help but worry.

"Don't get me wrong here. I think Adam is a great kid. I just...I know my family. We attract bad things on a regular basis and the people closest to us are always the first to get burned." Like Jess. Literally, burned alive on the ceiling of his apartment. Sam looked down at his hands thoughtfully, biting down onto his lip as he did so. "I like you, Hermione. That's why I'm bringing this up. I think you and Adam...well, I think you make him happy. I just want to make sure you know what you're getting yourself into by becoming involved with this family." It was one thing to be dating him back in Lawrence. It was another to come all the way out here and help deal with the aftermath of one of their hunts. That was...it was a step. A big one.

Hermione felt her cheeks warm at Sam's words. Yes, she really did care for Adam. An awful lot, if she was honest. When he questioned her on why, her eyes shot up to meet his. It was a strange question if she was perfectly truthful, especially coming from a brother. But then Sam went on to explain his question and she could see why he asked it. His family wasn't the easiest, their situations more bad than good from what she knew. But Adam somehow made it all worth it, and his family had so far been more than welcoming. It was hard to want to pull away after that. And she would never leave Adam just because his family was not the ideal family.

"I guess most would then go on to say that not every family is perfect, but I know yours isn't exactly normal. But you all care for each other deeply, more than some families do. And I do care for Adam, and I would not be a very good girlfriend if I decided not to date him because his family has such insane problems."

She kept quiet as he spoke more, nodding a little. She could see his worries, and knew that she would be expressing them as well had it been her family. But it was almost too late now. She liked Adam despite his family always getting into trouble, and his family already meant quite a bit to her. She had no reason to dislike any of them and she hoped that would continue to happen.

"If I hadn't known I would not have come here to help. But your family and everything that happens comes with Adam and I am willing to deal with that if it means being with him. I am not saying I have to be involved in everything you all do, and I know that there is a lot you will likely want to keep me from, but understand that as long as I have feelings for Adam, I will accept everything that comes with your family. After all, back home I was in danger because of someone I care about very much. And not once did that stop be caring."

"Honestly, I don't think anyone out there would blame you if you decided to up and leave because of how screwed up this family is." Sam wasn't going to lie. Frankly, in his case, if Ruby wasn't a demon, she probably wouldn't have lasted as long as she had thus far. Sam could only tally but so much of it up to his ability in keeping her safe; Ruby was pretty tough herself, as such some demons didn't bother screwing around with her as much as they would a normal human. Not that Hermione was terribly normal, but she still had a lot more to learn about demons than Ruby did, considering. "I'm just - look, you seem confident. Which is great. I'm glad you are; Adam deserves having someone around who knows exactly what she wants, even with all the risks involved. I think that's..." Sam rubbed at the back of his neck, looking down a little nervously. "It's perfect, actually. I just don't want anyone getting hurt here. You, if something bad catches up with you because of who we are. And him if you do get hurt and he has to deal with the pain that comes with it. Because, trust me, Hermione, it's not...I've been in that position before. It's not easy." He was actually giving Hermione some kind of big brother talk here. Lecturing her about Adam and her own safety, telling her that he didn't want to see his little brother get hurt. It was unusual for him, playing the role of the big brother. He had never done it before. It used to be just him and Dean. Now that he had another sibling to look out for...

"I want the two of you to be happy. So if you can ride this out fully aware of the risks and if you can promise to be as careful as possible out there, when we're not around, then..." Sam looked over at her, offering her a weak smile. "Then I'm sure you'll do okay." He couldn't guarantee that she wouldn't get hurt or that she'd always be safe, but Hermione had already stated that she knew that there were risks. At her last statement, Sam looked down again, his smile going a little bit warmer at that. "Harry Potter's best friend. Yeah, definitely a dangerous gig there."

Hermione once again listened quietly to him. She could sense his nervousness in what he was saying so felt like that deserved her full attention even more, just so he would at least feel slightly more calm discussing the thoughts he had. After all, it would make him more willing to talk to her in the future if he felt the need to. And then she could tell what type of talk this was; he was telling her not to hurt Adam. Reaching forward, she placed her arm gently on Sam's arm.

"I have no intention of ever hurting your brother, nor do I intend on hurting your family."

She's always been at risk since she was young and befriended Harry. It seemed she was destined to stay within a rough and dangerous lifestyle no matter where she was. She simply squeezed his arm when he claimed he wanted them happy.

"I will do everything I can do to keep him happy." As his smile turned warm, she also grinned over at him. "Rather dangerous, yes. But when you really care for someone, their circumstances are just accepted as part of who they are. You care for every part of them, even if it comes with danger."

Sam nodded. He wasn't entirely reassured, but at least that was out in the open. He wouldn't - hopefully - have to give Hermione that speech again. "I hope he does everything he can to make you happy, too," Sam said honestly. He was still getting to know his younger brother, but Sam wanted to think that he was a decent guy. He seemed like a decent enough guy. It was kind of weird when Sam knew more about Hermione Granger than he did his own sibling, wasn't it? Nonetheless, Adam was a lucky guy. Being able to date someone like Hermione Granger? It didn't happen often. She definitely was a catch, something that Sam fully intended to remind Adam of every chance he got.

Looking down awkwardly, Sam released a nervous, yet relieved sort of laugh. "So, uh, big brother speech. On a scale of one to ten, how'd I do?" He shot Hermione an amused look. "It was sort of my first one," he confessed. "...ever." Sam was no stranger to looking out for his brother before (he had Dean, didn't he?), but this felt different. Adam wasn't Dean. He wasn't the brother that Sam had spent his entire life looking up to and trying to be exactly like. Adam was...well. He was Adam. Younger, completely new to the environment Sam knew better than any other, and lacking entirely in the knowledge of the new world that he had been thrust into. Sam was going to have to make sure he knew how to take care of himself. He was going to have to teach him things. Offer his advice. Set an example. All of that would inevitably lead back to whether or not Adam got killed during this apocalypse; in Sam's eyes, he had a big responsibility thrown before him, something that he wasn't going to let go unattended to. Dad didn't seem to be stepping up to the plate and Dean was still getting used to the idea, so it really did seem like Sam was gonna have to take charge here with Adam for a while.

Poor kid.

"And there will be danger," Sam said sternly. "Always will. With us, it doesn't stop." He had learned that the hard way years ago, back in Stanford. "So I suggest you try and make sure that you're prepared for the worst. That's all I ask, okay?"

"If how things have been are anything to go by, he will make me happy. He's a very...sweet man."

She blushed at that pathetic explanation over what Adam was. He was lovely and he made her feel a lot more comfortable than she had felt with many others before. She could be herself without worrying that she's being judged, and it was a relief. She laughed at his question, glad that things seemed less tense now. Dropping her hand from his arm, she gave him an encouraging smile.

"It was the first time I have ever received one and I think it went very well. It has certainly made me think more about hurting him, my plans have been stopped." She gave him a grin to show she was only teasing. She really didn't want him thinking she really set out to hurt Adam. She never would.

"I'll expect danger, no matter what happens. But I'll do everything I can to make sure I'm ready for it."

Sam grinned sheepishly, head ducking in embarrassment. "It's a one time thing," he assured her. "Now that it's out of the way, you won't have to put up with one from me again. Honest." Mostly because Sam didn't like giving the speech. Yet it had been a necessary one, so there it was. With that out of the way, it seemed like things immediately began to lighten up between them. Sam was glad. The last thing he wanted in the world was to be tense and uncomfortable around someone like Hermione. Hands clasped together in front of himself, Sam peered off across the backyard, mind jumping back to the fight that they'd taken on against the ghouls earlier. Adam had a lot in store for him. Unfortunately, the poor kid didn't have much good waiting. He'd have to deal with stuff like ghouls and all kinds of other monsters for as long as he acknowledged the fact that he was related to the Winchesters. Sighing, Sam ran a hand over his face and glanced over at Hermione carefully.

"Good. And, look, I know the complex runs it's training programs and things like that, but I'll try and show you what I can, too. I won't be dragging you off on any hunts or anything -" At least not yet. Because, damn, how cool would it be to go on a hunt with Hermione Granger? "- but I'll help you out with whatever you need. You just say the word. I want you to be as prepared for the worst as possible." He probably sounded like a paranoid mess. Yet Hermione had just witness first-hand that bad things tended to find their family. The corpses that looked exactly like Adam and his mother that they had salted and burned upon her arrival were evidence enough.

"I hope so."

It may not be the most fun speech to sit through, after all it meant people thought her capable of hurting Adam, but she understood the background to it. He just wanted to make sure that she knew that Adam was cared for and if she did eventually hurt him, which she very much doubted, then his family would not be pleased with him.

She kept her eyes on Sam when he sighed, wondering what was coming next. But what he said next had her smiling over at him. She had to learn how to keep herself safe in this environment, and why not learn from someone who was very involved in that world.

"I would really appreciate any help you are willing to give me."

"I'm always willing to help out," Sam reassured her, shooting Hermione a faint smile. He smoothed his hands over the knees of his jeans and released a heavy breath. "Anyway, I think we should probably go ahead and get back inside. There's a lot of stuff that still needs to be done and I don't know if we should leave Adam alone for too long right now." He didn't want to overcrowd him, but he didn't want to just leave him to it either. It was a delicate situation, one that they really had to be considerate about. Sam would help him, but he wouldn't push things too much. At the same time, he'd give him his distance, but he'd still stand by close enough to make sure Adam didn't do anything stupid. He didn't know Adam like he knew Dean; determining how he was going to behave in the face of something as fucked up and tragic as what they had seen here at his home was a lot more difficult for Sam to do than it would have been for his other brother. Putting a hand to the porch railing, Sam stood up and offered Hermione his hand so that he could help her to her feet as well.

"I'm glad we had this talk, awkward as it was," he told her with a more genuine smile. Now that it was out of the way, Sam could worry about things less. Maybe. He was hoping he would. He already had enough to worry about in general, what with the apocalypse riding their asses and the mountain of other family issues Sam had riding his back. Sam knew that he would never stop worrying about Adam and Hermione entirely, but he was hoping that he could at least stop panicking over them long enough to accomplish something in those other departments. "We should probably order a pizza or something," Sam commented. "I don't think anyone has really eaten all that much today." It didn't seem like a bad plan. They'd go inside, order some food, and help Adam with the rest of his stuff. By the time they finished cleaning things up, the food would arrive. They could eat and leave.

"Well so am I, in anything that I can help with. But I am honestly grateful for any help you can give me so I can do what I have to in this place."

And to keep Adam safe. For a man that she had only known a short period of time she really cared for him. Perhaps it was the circumstances they had met, plus the time they had spent, that had made her so desperate to keep him safe. And after what she had seen today that urge to keep him safe was starting to grow. And the more she talked to Sam and the more she thought about what came with his family, the more she wanted to protect him. She watched as he stood, smiling at his offered hand before she took it and used his hold to pull herself up to stand, brushing the back of her jeans as she did so.

"So am I," she replied with as genuine a smile as the one he was giving her. It was good to at least know she had someone in Adam's family that she could talk to with apparent ease. There was something trusting about Sam and she really hoped she wasn't wrong there. She nodded when he mentioned food, knowing that it will possibly be difficult to get Adam to eat. She knew this type of sitiuation could often remove an appetite. But she would try her best to look out for Adam.

"Times like these food isn't always at the front of people's minds. But I'm sure if there's food there everyone will eat. Hopefully."

Pulling out her wand, she glanced around the garden once more to make sure that nothing really needed done. Tilting her head when her eye caught a badly broken part of the porch she pointed her wand and muttered a spell, watching the wood right itself before she smiled at Sam. "Shall we?"
