WHO: Sam & Adam
WHAT: Adam wants a burger, Sam wants to make sure that his sudden brother outta nowhere isn't actually a monster from Hell.
WHEN: Early evening. Backdated to a few days ago.
WHERE: A restaurant.
RATING: PG-13.

The restaurant that Sam had told Adam to meet him at was decent. The food was quality, the service was decent, and it was never too packed whenever Sam dropped by. He sometimes came out to the place to pick up fries for Ruby or to grab a quick meal for himself, so the lay of the land was familiar enough. Sam needed that, especially now. Meeting someone new - someone that was claiming to be his half brother that he had never known about before, at that - was something that Sam felt he had to be more than careful with. If this Adam kid really wasn't who he said he was, he'd be screwed. That was exactly why Sam had gone well out of his way to make sure that he wasn't alone when he pulled up to the restaurant. Nope, he had his three best friends tagging along with him - Holy Water, Silver, and good ol' Taurus PT99. Sam would have been more comfortable walking into this meet-up with Dean at his side, but Dean didn't really seem to be in the position to be handling something like this right now. Coming back from the dead, having to cope with amnesia, and getting used to the fact that half of his formerly deceased family happened to be back among the living was difficult enough as it was. Throwing Adam at him on top of that? Yeah, no. That could wait until later. Much, much later.

Pushing into the restaurant, Sam slid into the nearest booth and ordered a pair of waters. Simple. He didn't know Adam (or the fact that he had even existed up until now), but water was a pretty universal thing. It also worked well when one decided to mix other liquids into it. Like holy water, for example. Doing well to make sure that no one was paying him any mind, Sam slipped the flask from his pocket and tipped some of the holy water into Adam's glass. Then he switched the glass around to Adam's side of the booth, shoved the flask away, and waited.

Sam poked at the menu in front of himself. He tried not to pay it too much attention, as he was supposed to be on alert until it was verified that Adam wasn't some kind of monster. It was still difficult to keep himself from eying the various foods decorating the cover. Epiphany's damned potion. Just when he had thought that he was past the whole munchies stage of his 'medication', the whole thing threw itself right on into his lap again. Biting down onto his lip, Sam flipped the menu over. The bacon cheeseburger printed across the back side immediately made his stomach lurch. In a good way.

"Uh, waiter?"

Adam had to MapQuest the place that Sam had suggested and write down the directions in order to meet him there. After all, this was a guy that had never been to Lawrence before in his life. Not his first life, anyway, because what he was going through could probably count as a second life. There was that whole stint of dead in the middle there.

He was fully aware that this was probably going to be the single most awkward meal of his entire life. Second life. Both of them combined. He was meeting a brother he didn't know he had, one that was worried about a different brother Adam didn't know he had. Because that one had just died, too. It was more than safe to say that weird stuff was going on in Lawrence, alright. People dying and coming back. People showing up that weren't even supposed to be real in the first place. A horseman of the Apocalypse. But, then again, it was the Apocalypse entirely. Of course weird things were going to happen.

Adam just didn't think that they would happen in his lifetime.

Thankfully, the diner wasn't that far away from the complex, so the walk only took him a good twenty minutes. It was quickly becoming obvious that he was going to have to invest in getting himself a car at some point. How he was going to afford one was the problem though.

That was what he was thinking about as he walked into the diner. It wasn't hard to spot Sam once he got in there. He pretty much looked like his picture. But, you know. Bigger. A lot bigger. Even sitting down Adam could tell that the guy was pretty huge.

"Hey," he said simply as he walked over and slid into the seat across from him. Yeah. Awkward was coming.

Awkward was already there, actually. Looking up from the menu that he had been fiddling with (even after ordering himself that burger he'd been considering before), Sam found himself greeting Adam with a deeply set frown rather than a polite smile or even a simple enough response. He couldn't help it; there was something in his features that vaguely reminded him of Dean. At least he had the Winchester resemblance down. Sam breathed out sharply through his nose, then reached across the table and offered Adam his hand. "I'm Sam," he said, somewhat stiffly. Adam knew that already. Sam just figured it'd be better off telling him that fact in person. Instead, it came off...oddly. Stiff. Distant. It wasn't a gesture that was intended to be cold. Sam was just...uncertain. About all of this, really. Had Dad really kept something as important as him having a half brother from him his whole life? Sam could vaguely understand the motivations behind the man's actions (if he squinted) if the person sitting before him was, in fact, blood; but did he even want to? The old, rebellious Sam would have snapped. He wouldn't have been able to tolerate the fact that, again, John Winchester had kept something important hidden from his sons. But now, after all that he had experienced since his father's death...

"I already went ahead and ordered us a couple burgers," Sam continued. "I mean, if you want something else instead we can switch up the order -" Or Sam would just eat them both, because Epiphany's potion was making him crave cheeseburgers like...well. Demon blood. "- and if you want something else to drink besides water, just let the server know." Sam eyed the glass of water perched in front of Adam. Step one: holy water. Sam hoped to high hell that he wasn't gonna have to exorcise a demon in the middle of this diner. He really liked the food here and something told him that they'd be a lot less eager to serve him if they saw him doing something freaky. Of course, with the way that the city had gone to hell lately, maybe they wouldn't be too surprised after all. Experience told him that it was better to just avoid taking risks altogether. Even when people had actual monsters dancing naked in front of them, they tended to compensate and make up things to make it seem less horrible than it actually was. It was never a smart thing. Those people were the ones who usually ended up getting themselves killed.

Yeah, Adam was perfectly aware of who the guy was already, so the introduction itself wasn't really needed. But, whatever. When in Rome and all of that crap. "Adam," he said simply, even though Sam also knew who he was already, as he took Sam's hand for a firm shake. Really, the more Adam thought about the situation the less surprised that he had two brothers he never knew about. After all, it turned out his dad had fed him lies about what he did for a living, along with God knows what else. It kinda made sense that John Winchester found some other stuff to lie about along the way.

Does it count as a lie if it's just... never mentioned at all? Adam wasn't sure. Either way, he wished his dad told him, even if he never actually met them before. Just knowing that they existed and that taking care of them or something was why his dad was never there to help his mom might have made him resent John a bit less. Maybe. But, then again, he may have ended up resenting Sam and Dean more because of it.

"The burger should be fine," Adam responded, looking down at his own menu as he spoke. He picked up the glass of water for a couple gulps and, for obvious reasons, nothing happened to him as he drank it. He was just thirsty from the walk. But once the waitress came back he asked for a soda as well. Coke, Pepsi, whichever one. He didn't really care all that much.

"So, looks like you're real after all."

The water checked out. Good. Sam folded his arms over his chest and leaned back in his chair, casually turning his attention outward. The restaurant wasn't too busy today. That was probably a good thing. If this next trick didn't pan out, there'd be a scuffle. Sam didn't want too many witnesses on the scene, nor did he want to see too many people put in danger. He was prepared to strike first and put Adam down if need be - his gun was easily within arms reach - but Sam really wasn't comfortable with the idea that these people could have ended up hurt along the way. If not for the fact that this was an open, public place that any regular stranger would feel most comfortable meeting a person for the first time, their current arrangement would have been packed away into a place with a lot less civilians around. Sam bit down on his lip and tried not to think about it too much. He had to focus on the priority here. Reaching into his pocket, Sam pulled out his silver knife. Step two. Silver. It was an effective tool against plenty of monsters out there. More than a good handful. If this was some kind of monster trying to screw around with him, it'd react. Sam was counting on it.

"Yeah, it does." Sam leaned forward, knife still hiding underneath the table and out of sight. "Looks like you just passed your first test." Sam nodded to his glass. "Holy water. Used on demons; you would've gone up in smoke if you'd have been one." That said, Sam slid the knife across the table. "Flip that open for me and touch the blade." He would have gone with their silverware, but Sam already knew that the diner didn't have anything real. He'd sat at these tables too many times. It was a habit of his to sort of fiddle with things while he waited for a meal. Spoons and such at the table were definitely among them.

"I know it seems weird. But go with me here. You already know that monsters are real, so..." Sam nodded to the knife. "I need to make sure you're not one of them." It probably seemed more than weird. Paranoid. Crazy. But unlike Adam, John had raised Sam and Dean up differently. They were trained up as his soldiers. For a long time, Sam had believed that was all that they had ever been.

Sam had spiked Adam's water with water. Okay, it was holy water. And that was just... really fucking weird.

But what Adam thought was even weirder was the fact that he understood why Sam did that. Before he was killed Adam would have thought that was some sort of move of an insanely paranoid mind. A sign of someone to stay the hell away from. Sadly, these days Adam knew that monsters were real. He learned that first hand, after all. Got eaten by a couple of them and everything.

"Yeah, it's weird," Adam said simply, glaring at Sam just a bit. He understood why it was necessary to slip him some holy water, if it actually did kill off monsters or whatever, but that didn't mean that he couldn't be freaking annoyed by it anyway.

Adding a touch of frown to the glare, making him look sort of like a puppy that was both sad and irritated, he reached across the table and took the knife in question. "So what does silver do to them?" he asked simply as he popped the knife open and touched the blade. Nothing happened except for Adam looking back at his brother (that was still a weird thought) from across the table.

Check on the silver. Sam breathed out a sigh of relief and shook his head. "Silver burns shapeshifters and a number of other creatures," Sam informed him, leaning a little closer to the table now that he was sure that Adam was actually human. He could tell from that look he'd gotten a few seconds prior that Adam wasn't a fan of the testing process. Sam was sorry for that, but it had to be done. He wouldn't have been a very good hunter if he hadn't taken the time to check and be sure. "I'm sorry," Sam expressed, seeming a little (a little because this entire situation was still pretty friggin' weird) less tense than before. "I had to be sure. When you hear about a brother you never knew existed before, you can't help the suspicion that follows, you know?" And that was just as a hunter. Sam didn't even want to begin to get started on how he felt as a regular guy finding out about a random sibling.

"So, uh..." Now what? Sam was half convinced that he was gonna have to come in here and gank someone. Now...he had a guy sitting across the table from him who was supposed to be his half brother. "...you're really my brother, then. That's...that's something." Something special. In a not so good way. Sam didn't want to get angry and deny everything; doing so wouldn't have done anyone good. But he was still having a hard time processing it all.

"How are you dealing with all this? I mean, I can't be the only one weirded out here." That seemed like a good approach. Find common ground. Because, seriously, Sam didn't know anything about this kid at all. Just that they were both two branches on the same fucked up family tree.

Demons went up in smoke from holy water. Shapeshifters burned if they touched silver. God, all this was weird. A little over a year earlier if someone had tried to tell him what happened to demons and shapeshifters Adam would have just laughed in their face as he wrote them off as a crazy person, then turned and wandered off. But now? After everything he'd been through? Getting torn up by a whatever those things were? Going to Heaven only to get pulled back again? Land in the middle of a war zone where everyone thought everyone else was a demon? The fucking Apocalypse? Adam couldn't help but take Sam seriously as he said that, even if there was still that part of him that really, really didn't want to.

"It's fine. Whatever," he said simply in response to Sam's apology. It had to be done, right? Adam wasn't sure if he would have done it, too, if he was in the same position as Sam, with all the monsters in his past and everything, but he guessed it was possible. It was hard to tell what he would and wouldn't do though, when you consider the fact that he wasn't raised with all of that bullshit.

Though there were a couple times since coming back that he wished he was. He might have been able to protect his mom.

And then Sam was asking how he was dealing. The answer to that should have been pretty obvious. "You're not," he started, fingering at the corner of the laminated menu as he looked away from Sam and out the window. "It's weird for me, too. Being back, finding out I have brothers, all of it. I'm still pissed at Dad for lying to me for, you know, my entire life, and I'm wondering if Mom knew about any of it, but I can't exactly ask her, can I?" Those last words sounded bitter as they came out of his mouth. And why shouldn't they? Everyone else seemed to be getting their family back, but Adam's mom was still gone.

"I guess it makes sense that you guys exist though. I mean, I didn't know shit about Dad anyway. Why would he tell me about you guys when he didn't tell me anything else?"
