Who: Kaylee and Mal.
What: being captainy. keeping her company but his excuse is captain-y things
When:today
Where: her place
warnings: tba

Mal was sick of hiding in his room, it wasn't like him at all. It was time to remedy that and start making rounds to check on his crew. First up was Kaylee. She flat out admitted she wasn't being brave, and Mal knew exactly which of her buttons to push to bring it forward. He'd known her long enough now to understand what made her tick. Simon was being defiant. He would be last. He wasn't in a fighty mood to deal with bickering and complications that would no doubt rise to the surface with a visit to his quarters. Then there was River, who had started making sense again. Completely and totally. Demons and an understanding between him and River..Mal wondered how far away the local institute was incase there was some crazy to be had on his part later. His mind was no where near clear, which was likely sucking for poor River with their connection. But he couldn't help it, demons were the unknown. Kaylee had a point. "Gorram Mo gui."(demon) He muttered as he found his way through the maze like complex to Kaylee's quarters.

It didn't take him terribly long, but it still took longer then he would have liked. He didn't know the complex well, despite having been there longer than any of them. The first few weeks he spent there were avoiding the residents of the building after being accused of murder he never committed. Not to mention being a priest. That was laughable and iconical honestly. Him. a priest after everthing that'd happened. He knocked on Kaylee's door. "It's me." and stood back to wait. He was armed as always, but it wasn't like it was really going to help much considering the demons they were dealing with. Still it made him feel better. Earth was a rock he wanted off of as soon as possible. He was not comfortable in the least with his feet on the ground. He belonged in the sky.

Everything about this place left Kaylee feeling cold and afraid. She’d been pacing from one corner to the other when she caught wind of the possession epidemic. Terrible thoughts filled her head. She imagined her friends and crew with black eyes, riding shotgun with some horrible, evil thing controlling them. Kaylee prided herself on doing what needed to be done, but everything was so unfamiliar that she found herself unable to do anything but pace her new room.

She jumped just slightly when she heard the knock, but a look of relief crossed her face immediately after. It was the captain. Kaylee hoped with all of her heart that company might ease her fears or that, maybe, all of her friends would band together and fix the mess Lawrence was in. They were good guys, that was what they did.

Kaylee opened her door just a crack and peered out, sighing with relief when she saw Mal with eyes that were his and not all black and evil. She opened the door a little more.

“It’s good to see you.” She smiled in spite of the circumstances. “And you not some awful thing wearin’ you like a suit.”

Part of her fear he took on as his fault, he hadn't exactly been around to show her the ropes. So he took it upon himself to quell some of said fear and accompany her during the chaos. It was out of character for him to say it straight up of course, so he used a lame excuse. "Needed to check on all you. Five minutes without me and chaos becomes a light term." He mused aloud and looked her over. No black eyes. No strange movements. Nothing out of sorts. He might have been relieved if it hadn't been for Simon and River he still had to check on.

"I'll second that. Don't much like when dead things move. " He looked up the hallway and down the hallway he came. Place was like a ghost town. "Ain't right." He stated. He tried not to seem nervous, but being without Serenity wasn't a pleasant thing for him. Who knew what fun this weird Earth had to offer the longer they stayed on the ground.

He wanted to get out of the hallway but he wasn't about to barge into Kaylee's place. He may march around in the hallways and common areas as if they were his, but private rooms where his crew's own, he respected that. "I like seeing you in one piece. "He offered awkwardly.

Kaylee took a small step backwards and opened the apartment door a little wider.

“Come in,” She smiled a little, gesturing for Mal to join her. She hadn’t done anything with the place since the day she moved in. There was furniture, but it had all yet to be customized. The bare bones rooms made her miss Serenity even more than she already did. “I don’t have food or tea or anything, but there’s a chair if you wanna sit.” Kaylee gave a little bit of a nod to the wooden chair against the wall.

“Captain?” Kaylee looked at Mal with big, unsure eyes. “Are things gonna be normal again?”

She wished with all of her heart that they could all be back on the ship. She decided that she’d never complain about the Alliance going after them or about nasty bounty hunters. A dangerous, hectic life on Serenity would beat living on a dangerous, hectic Earth any day.

There weren't any demons in the hallway. Mal had chosen a good time to escape his boring room. When he was finally invited in, he raised an eyebrow. The place hadn't been Kaylee-ified yet and that was the first thing he would have suspected she'd do. All things considered though he was understanding about it. There were demons running around, or 'not demons', whatever they were. Some folks claimed they were a fake, others accused the accusers, and it was all a mess of confusion that wasn't getting them anywhere. Mal opted to stay out of the fray and keep an eye on his crew instead.

"You haven't stocked up?" He questioned her curiously and looked at her with a little uncertainty. "Food in the kitchen is a free for all." He added and shrugged at the chair, he wasn't going to make the first move to take it. It wasn't his place, it should be hers.

"They will, trust me." He said with reassurance and put a hand on her shoulder in an attempt to be comforting. After a few seconds he took it back and looked around. "They also have some funds for us. " Of which Mal was thinking of stealing for his crew and distributing amongst them. It wouldn't have been the first time.

Those were the words she had wanted to hear. Mal hadn’t failed the crew before, so she trusted him. He was a good guy and a great leader. Still, she was a little unsure about things on Earth being fixable.

“It ain’t like fixin’ an engine. This demon stuff is just plain strange. I don’t know where to start when it comes to helpin’ out here.” Kaylee folded her arms across her chest.

“Have you checked on the others? River and Simon?” Though the business about money was undoubtably important, Kaylee skipped over it for the moment. The safety of the others from Serenity was weighing on her mind. She hoped that they were safe, holed away in their apartment like she had been.

It made him feel at ease being around Kaylee. She was like him. He felt the most comfortable with his feet off the ground, and she loved serenity as much as he did. Sitting with her though did beg the question, how was his ship. If they were all there who was keeping an eye on it? If anything happened to Serenity while he was gone..

"Makes two of us. At least your arrival didn't have them questionin you as a murderer." He frowned deeply, this wasn't Mal's favorite place. "I'd rather go back to the crappy town of Jayne. " He honestly didn't know what to make of Earth. Where they were from, it didn't exist anymore. It was the very distant future ontop of that. What happened if the past caught up to their timeline? He had so many questions.

"Not yet, that's my next stop. Makin rounds." He stated, just like Serenity. Without hauling cargo across the verse, Mal didn't quite know what to do with himself. He didn't much like being out of place. "I ain't even sure what were' going to do about our funds. " He didn't like being so open about their issues, but they were all just as lost. They needed to pull together more then usual.
