The lights flared on and there went Sunshine's depth perception. Damn, she should be used to this by now, but the sudden contrast from dark light had her shutting her eyes fast. At least the moment was quickly followed up with what she assumed to be Sam's voice. Gods and angels, let it be Sam and not some Jack the Ripper-wannabe taking advantage of the chaos the city had devolved into. She might have made some smartass quip to try and cover her fear - not so much from Sam, but from herself - but she didn't.
At that moment, the cut on her arm decided to remember itself to her with a sharp sting, distracting her from the adrenaline coursing through her system. But not the guilt. She couldn't get the boy away. It felt like a weight was pressing down on her chest. She should have tried harder. She shouldn't have left without him. How could she have been so careless? Jacen had no ethics, had had no problem messing around with the kid's head and she seriously doubted where his loyalties were. For all she knew, he was already one of Lucifer's henchmen. Little as Sunshine knew about what was going on, that much at least she would bet was bad... beyond bad. Thesaurus-using beyond kali-skegging bad, unfortunately her thesaurus and word-slinging best friend weren't here right now to help her think of something more descriptive so she could know just how awful she should feel.
Her voice was laced with bitter regret and a dash of self-loathing. "Sam? I couldn't get him. He's too excited about the 'jedi.' I need your help. I can't leave him there with Jacen. I don't know what he'll do. The guy's not stable." Carefully Sunshine cracked open an eye and looked down, away from the light, to try and let her eyes adjust. There was a time the sudden lights wouldn't have bothered her, but the fact was they did now. The cheap finish of the sink was cracking in places. The minute shadows there squirmed in a nausea-inducing dance. Sunshine really, really hated this part. She wondered if someone somewhere had made glasses to deal with this problem, but then, how many people did she know running around seeing the world through Vampire Vision 3D? Gods, she needed a drink. Step one, save the boy. Step two, save the world. Step three, whiskey.
