A chill settled over Sunshine as she watched the concern in the boy’s eyes dim, only to be replaced with what she perceived to be a vague stare at the television. It made her feel ill. The boy would have been upset to hear what they’d have to say – but it was his right to be upset. It would not have been easy or productive, but it was his right. She almost said something. But what was she supposed to do? Part of her agreed that this wasn’t a conversation the boy would need to hear. She also didn’t know the first thing about contradicting the man before her. She didn’t have the best of track records with officials who could mess with someone’s mind, and that had been back when it was only retrieving information. This was a whole new level of scary. The thought of SOF’s very own Goddess of Pain coming head to head with Ganner was almost enough to make her smile for a split second. She really needed to do better at keeping her thoughts on track.
Sadly, she wasn’t given long to dwell on it before the words he was saying filtered though her meandering mind. Her eyes widened as she looked back at Ganner. “What do you mean it didn’t work?” It wasn’t an accusation, simply a reaction out of fear. The rules in this new world were different, but at least before they had seemed reasonably laid out. Black eyes were countered with exorcism. Latin and holy water fixed the problem. But now he was telling her that such was no longer the case. She wasn’t so selfish that she didn’t spare a thought for that poor woman. What must that be like? To have someone else pilot your body, control your actions, to make those you love run in fear. Gods, what had she walked into?
Sunshine wasn’t sure he meant it when he asked for her suggestions. It reminded her of her 10th grade history teacher. He was so kali sure he knew all the answers. But it didn’t matter. She had nothing to go on in this situation. As much as she hated it, he was the expert. “I don’t know. We didn’t have these kinds of demons back home. Just what is it you suggest we do?” She was already mentally running through what they knew. Some super-strong or different kind of demon had possessed this boy’s mother and, judging from what Sunshine had seen on the street, she wasn’t the only one.
