Second house across the street? He didn’t expect her to just walk over and break in did… He did. He really really did. This world was messed up. But Sunshine couldn’t give him the verbal thrashing she wanted to, probably for the best. She often lost her cool when her temper flared, but she had to hold her tongue in front of the boy. As he came to, she immediately knelt, sinking to be eye level with him. “Not yet. But the Jedi’s gonna go help her, okay? And you know what we’re gonna do? We’re gonna put together some stuff to help her too. She’s probably going to be hungry. Would you help me make her a sandwich? And we can make one for you too. You probably haven’t had much to eat today.” She kept up a gentle litany of reassurances as Jacen slipped away.
She had half a mind to go after him, but her hands were successfully tied by the presence of the child. Straightening up, Sunshine stood and led the child over to the house. She prayed that this would work here. Her hand reached into her pocket. Still smiling at the kid, she quietly changed her pocketknife into a key. This had worked before, and the sun was still out, so that at least was in her favor. Taking the key from her pocket – the kid never had to know that this wasn’t really her house – she tried it on the door.
Sunshine almost cursed when the door stuck, but with a little force, she was able to get the key to turn and the door to open. “Here we are.” She led the boy inside without giving away that she wasn’t at all familiar with the lay out. Chattering on, she started to subtly lay the foundation to ask about friends and relatives he could go to.
