"It's our Brangelina spot," Sam explained, carefully stepping around her chair. "I couldn't forget this place if I tried." That said, Sam slipped back into his chair. The table resting between them was currently Sam's biggest hero. At the same time, it was also something that he was beginning to hate. The relationship between himself and their dinner table was a funny one indeed. Yet no matter how Sam felt about the table, it would continue to do it's job: it would keep Sam and Ruby physically separated. Sam anxiously drummed his fingers against his napkin, mentally reminding himself that this was her night. Ruby deserved to come out, have dinner, and enjoy herself on her birthday. He wasn't going to ruin this by freaking out and attacking her over his stupid addiction. Determined to ensure that he followed through, Sam tried for a light smile and forced himself to quit with the twitchy tapping on the table. His hands fell into his lap. "Pick anything you want. For all I care, you could order the whole menu. Tonight is your night, Ruby." Sam smiled again, this time looking a lot more genuine. "Happy birthday."
His menu would make for a worthy distraction for his hands. Sam grabbed it and flipped it open, gaze momentarily dropping downward so that he could read the menu. It didn't last long - as soon as Ruby started speaking, Sam looked up and locked eyes with her. She had so much blood in that body. Ruby always carried her knife on her person. Maybe he could get her drunk on some sake.
...no, no, no. Don't even think about it, you fucking jackass. His grip tightened on the menu a little.
"That wasn't what I had in mind when I brought you here, you know. I just wanted to make a point. Prove you wrong. There was always something real satisfying about one upping you back then." That was because Ruby had always acted the role of a pain in the ass know-it-all. Cut out a virgins heart, Sam. It's the right thing to do. You didn't cut out the virgins heart? See, you failed. Told you! Sam leaned back in his chair and peered across at Ruby fondly. He had to admit, she had gotten a lot better about it. Either that or Sam had warmed up to it. Probably a mixture of both. "But after that night? I think I felt the same. Taking you out, looking at you as something more than a demon, seeing that different side of you...it's like one night was all that it took for everything to change. I'm grateful that it did."
