"You don't look too bad yourself" she said in response eyes lighting up at the compliment from him, it wasn't the first time and it wouldn't be the last time she heard it, but every single time it was a thrill. Sitting down helped her focus herself a little, focusing on the dinner was a plan, that and watching Jo and Elliot settle in to a conversation at a table a little distance away. Enough that they were close if they needed to intervene but far enough away to give both couples a little privacy. It was a kind of babysitting of course and it irritated Ruby on many levels that they needed it but in truth they did and there was nothing to be done about it just yet. Even the hand Sam had placed on her back, amazing as it felt there, had worried her. Was it enough? Would anything ever be enough? How did one tell? But those were questions for another day, with a smile to Jo as Sam complimented her Ruby settled into the seat Sam had pulled out for her. Oh yes, he was good at the gentleman stuff when he wanted to be.
"I kind of love that you remembered this place too" she told him, already picking up the menu and reading what little she could understand to work out what kind of food she wanted. She was in the mood to go wild, culinarily at least since that was about all she was going to manage this evening. But it was her birthday wasn't it. She was allowed to. She looked over the menu and then up at Sam, still smiling. It seemed she couldn't help it.
"Any ideas? Do we go with the same as last time or do you have everything planned out for us again." He'd done everything she could have expected and more, bringing her back to this place. The place where he'd showed her that she should expect to be respected by men. That she didn't have to see everything as being used or using. This was where she'd really fallen for him. "You know this is where it changed right?" she asked him, "This is where you became someone more special to me than anything else. Than any of it. You bringing me here, telling me I could be respected. The birthday stuff. This is when I knew I loved you"
