Jo would keep anything from happening that would hurt Sam. It was nice to have that known, nice to know she wouldn't make things worse or have him relapse by being here. That was if she could get across the floor in those shoes Ruby could tell she wasn't used to. Took practice. Maybe she'd convince the Hunter to dress a little fancy now and again, it looked like she'd enjoy it. As for the rest, the birthday comment. It was nice of Jo to say, and who knew, maybe she really did deserve a birthday. She liked it now that she had it. And Sam had remembered which was what boyfriends were supposed to be. Boyfriend or...more. She thought back to Sam's proposal. Or almost proposal. What would someday become one, and smiled. She was very very lucky. "I like the idea of it y'know, feels more normal having one than not and I don't even know who I was much less when I was born or anything." She left it at that as Jo went ahead and got herself all distracted by Elliot Spencer, who Ruby had to agree did clean up nice. And she didn't think he'd laugh at how Jo looked.
Ruby was planning to be highly amused by the looks and everything when they entered the resturant, but the she saw Sam, waiting at their table, looking...nervous actually if she had to describe it as anything. He looked nervous to see her, maybe nervous about what would or wouldn't happen. If he could handle things. But Ruby truly believed he could, he was stronger than anyone had ever really gave him credit for, All the darkness in his life and he'd fought back against it every single time. He'd come back from worse and he would again. Importantly for now, he was staring at her just as much as she was staring back at him, Ruby actually looked back at Jo, possibly actually sharing what passed for a girly moment before making her way past the other tables toward Sam. She didn't hug him when she reached him, not knowing the protocol anymore. How much would a hug or a kiss do to him? How much harder would it make things for him to get through this dinner.
"You remembered" she said simply, a smile that one might describe as schmoopie crossing her features. "I didn't know if you would, with everything. I wouldn't have minded if you did but this is...this is actually making me babble isn't it. Can we sit down before this gets embarassing?" she asked, looking around the resturant fondly, remembering the cake, the wildly inappropriate teasing. All of it. Those were good memories they shared between them. And they vastly outweighted the bad.
