Anybody home?
Who: Parker and Open
What: Seeking shelter
When: today
Where: the apartment complex
Status: Open and Incomplete

Though Parker found Bela to be agreeable and like-minded, she distanced herself a bit from the brunette as she made her way into the apartment complex. She had expected a scene from a zombie apocalypse movie, quite honestly. Barricades here and there, maybe a kind of fence made of fire, a desperate and armed legion of average joes... This all seemed quite normal on the surface.

“Hello?” She raised her voice a little, peering all around. Parker usually found staying calm to be easy, even during the most stressing of jobs, but she soon found herself nervously nipping at the inside of her mouth. She decided that she would calm down as soon as she could speak to one of the people in charge and that she would feel much better once she was able to send an e-mail or something to the rest of the crew in Boston.

Parker stuffed a hand in her back pocket, thumbing through the many bills she had stuck there. She liked to count money when she was bored or standing idle. It was one of her quirks.

The muscles in his arms and shoulders were burning, exhausted, by the time he finally gave up the assault on the punching bag. It swung back and forth in front of him, the relentless motion of the last few minutes giving it enough swing to keep it moving for a while. His last few sessions in the gym since the battle out in front of the complex had been the same. He pushed more, hit harder, picturing a face on the bag to go with the entity that had taken over his body and took away the control. He reached out to stop the bag, then gave it one last jab, sending it rocking again.

He stretched his arm across his body as he headed back across the gym to where he'd left his things, then switched back to the other arm. Grabbing the hooded sweatshirt and the water bottle from the pile on the floor, he headed out, tugging the sweatshirt on as he went.

His mind was elsewhere as he headed towards the lobby. Or it was until he heard someone calling out. It had been a long time since he'd heard that voice but he knew all too well who it belonged to. He picked up speed, nearly jogging the last few steps before he appeared in the lobby. A smile almost appeared, the relief of seeing a familiar face from his world. Finally. "Parker?"

Parker heard her name called and turned so sharply to face the source that she wound up a little dizzy. Her eyebrows furrowed a little. She couldn’t believe that it was Eliot. She really couldn’t, at first. Skeptically, Parker eyed him from head to toe. His mannerisms seemed to be the same and he was certainly a match as far as appearance. She was suddenly overcome by a pleasant feeling that she couldn’t quite put a name on and rushed up to him, flinging her arms around his shoulders.

“You’re here!” A big grin spread onto her face. It was a reunion of sorts. Eliot was like family to her - The real kind of family that sticks up for you in fights and doesn’t abandon you in a tight situation. Parker gave him another hug for good measure.

“How did you get here?” She took a step back, the smile still somewhat plastered on her face.

They'd had enough doubles show up that Eliot was wary enough to ask names first, greet later. But the way she moved and her reaction were evidence enough that this really was Parker. The seal had gotten itself a second member of the crew, something he had mixed feelings about. While he was glad to see someone he knew, he wouldn't wish being stuck here on anyone. Not even Sterling.

"I'm here," he echoed, giving her a quick squeeze in return. He really had missed them, even the little annoyances. Hardison's geek rambling, Nate's secrecy, Sophie being Sophie, Parker's...crazy. Now that kind of crazy, he had missed.

"Walked out of McRory's and suddenly I'm standing in the middle of the street in Lawrence," he said, shrugging. "No warning, no nothing." Which still irritated him, even though he rationally couldn't blame himself for a mystical seal getting the drop on him. "Where were you when you ended up here?"

Parker winced. Nobody in the crew liked it when a member took on a side job like she had prior to her arrival in Lawrence.

“I kind of...” She cleared her throat, looking at her feet for a second. “I sort of took on a side job.” Parker was silent only for a moment. “I got bored and I needed to do something!” She fully expected some sort of sign of disapproval. The last time she’d done a side job it had been for Archie Leach and the crew had to actually come and rescue her. It was kind of embarrassing for a thief of her caliber. To avoid a scolding, Parker kept on talking.

“I heard guards so I hopped into the vents to escape and I wound up in the middle of the road. A woman told me about this place,” She waved a hand around, indicating that she was talking about the apartment complex. “She drove me here.”

“Ooh!” Suddenly Parker’s face lit up like a little kid’s on Christmas morning. “Check out what I got away with!” She reached back to her pocket, pulling out the two small stacks of hundred dollar bills. “I don’t even know if they take normal money in Kansas, though.” She mumbled as an aside, focusing more on the new bills than anything else.

Side jobs. None of them liked the idea of someone tackling a job on their own, without letting the crew in on it, because it presented one possibility too many for problems. Jobs taken when the crew was apart didn't count, but Eliot wasn't naive enough to think it didn't happen when they were working together. Especially when he was guilty of it. It didn't stop the slightly annoyed look.

However, Parker didn't give him much time to comment on that little piece of information. "She happen to give you a name?" Not that it mattered, beyond Parker getting to the complex alive, in one piece, and unpossessed. Given she'd walked into the lobby without a problem, it looked like it was a success. Which led him to his next question. "Did you get the rundown of what's going on around here?"

Leave it to Parker to end up in another dimension with a none too shabby amount on her. Eliot laughed quietly as he looked down at the money she'd presented. "That's going to come in handy around here." He'd shown up with enough to get him through the week before running dry, with no bank account to pull from. The amusement became a dry look. "They take normal money in Kansas, Parker. Same as they do anywhere in the States."

A definite look of relief washed over Parker’s features upon hearing that you could use normal currency in Kansas. She had done jobs all over the globe but had never set foot in Kansas. Part of it had to do with her fear of the Wizard of Oz movie, but also because the big money was usually in bigger urban settings.

“Her name was Bela. Dark hair, British accent, smelled nice... She told me something about demons and angels.” Parker shook her head as if this was all just an every day happening.

“Is it true?” She asked in a slightly smaller voice.

The name was familiar, most likely one of the newcomers that had shown up after the big fight. Mostly having avoided the boards for the past few weeks, he'd seen it in passing. "Don't think I've met her," he said, shrugging.

"It's true. There's no way of going back unless that damn seal sends us back." How he'd even go about trying, he still couldn't figure out. The mystical was well out of his league. "Can't reach the rest of the team either, unless they show up too."

He nodded towards the stairwell that led up towards the first floor. "When you get on a computer, there's a link they pass around. Explains most of it."

Parker pursed her lips, not liking this supernatural mess she’d gotten dragged into at once. She wondered for a second if it would have helped if the others were there, but quickly put it out of her mind as the fact was that they weren’t and that she couldn’t do a thing about it. It was upsetting to a very intense degree, but she did a fabulous job of bottling it up.

“I need to buy a harness.” She nodded succinctly. “And some other things.”

“You know,” She folded her arms across her chest. “Hardison used to talk about the zombie apocalypse and I’d think about it but never really thought it would happen. I mean, there aren’t zombies here, but...” There was a pause and she looked up at Eliot. “There aren’t zombies here, right?”

"There haven't been any zombies." Which was the truth. One of the study sessions he'd gone through at the week long camp didn't rule out their existence entirely. So far, they'd been lucky to avoid running into any. "And it wouldn't happen where we're from. There's none of this supernatural crap," he muttered, glaring at the Devil's Trap on the floor just inside the entry.

"We can find somewhere around here to get the harness and whatever else you need." He glanced over his shoulder, checking to make sure the lobby was clear. "Maybe find something to do so you can test it out," he added. No better way to introduce her to Lawrence then a small job and no better way to get his mind off the past couple of weeks and what was coming next.

"C'mon. Rooms start the next floor up."

A tiny smile crossed her face at the mention of her doing something. Of course, Parker was thinking about doing something of the ‘steal something’ variety and not so much thinking about doing something productive for the little colony they had set up. The thought did cross her mind, though, and she wasn’t opposed to it. She was one of the good guys, after all.

She followed Eliot close behind, curious about what the rooms in the complex looked like, and tucked her money back in her pocket on her way up the stairs.

“What do you do here?” The little wheels of her imagination were turning much faster than usual. Her mind was filled with possibilities. Parker wondered if the people in the complex were one of those armies one sees in movies - Ordinary people fighting against evil.

"Whatever needs to be done," Eliot said, glancing over his shoulder at her as he climbed the stairs. "Mostly been on the combat squad, fighting the couple of skirmishes we've had." Crazy people, people that had been turned into some guy's clone, whatever else was thrown their way. "Been keeping my head down and being way too good."

Reaching the first floor, he tilted his head to indicate the doors. "The ones that have keys are open. You can grab something here or one of the upper floors. I'm up on the second."

He nodded back towards the stairs they'd just come up. "Downstairs is the community kitchen. It's stocked with food, so if you're feeling hungry, you can grab something."

“Can I do that? Help out, I mean?” She looked down a hallway. This was her new home. Before she’d settled down in Boston she had been used to a very nomadic lifestyle. Even in Boston she hadn’t really put down roots very deep. All she ever felt she needed was money, her bunny, and her rappelling gear, maybe with some Rocket O’s to munch on.

This place was full of possibilities. She wanted to know what there was to steal in Lawrence. She wanted to know what it was like to jump off of the complex’s roof.

“I can learn from you.” She turned back to Eliot with a decisive nod. “You were kind of teaching me back home, anyway.”

The image of Parker pickpocketing came to mind at her offer and brought out a small smirk. The thief was good enough that he would bet she could give them a run for their money. "That's more up to the heads of the complex but if you're offering, they sure as hell aren't going to be turning you down." They could use the help, especially since ole Lucy was out and walking around.

Eliot shrugged. "We'll give it a try." She picked things up quick enough, it wouldn't be that hard. Unlike Hardison, he wouldn't have to answer a hundred questions for one piece of information either.

There was a question on his mind, one that had come up for others when those they knew had shown up, but he felt weird asking it. He hesitated for a moment before looking over at her. "Hey Parker. What's the last job you remember us pulling?"

Her eyebrows wrinkled in confusion for a second. Eliot had been right there during their last job. Why didn’t he remember?

“There was a debt collector ripping off ordinary people to fund some freaky kind of backwoods militia. You and Hardison...” She shook her head and sighed. “You two almost got killed. I-- We were so worried.”

Remembering the gory details had not been fun. There had been a moment during that job where she had almost completely lost hope. She didn’t know what she would do without the two of them. They were the only family, aside from Archie, who had ever stuck with her in spite of her crazy personality.

“Don’t you remember?”

"No. The last job I remember pulling was the one where Tara conned us into thinking she was a lawyer." He'd just left Nate's apartment, heading out of McRory's when he'd stepped out the front door and found himself in Lawrence, standing outside of a pub he'd never heard of. That had been the second time, a little less confusing and a little more infuriating than the first time.

It didn't surprise him to hear he'd had a close call, with Hardison in tow no less. Watching Parker, he almost felt like he should have been apologizing for that close call, even if he hadn't actually been involved. At least, not yet.

"There's this weird...thing," Eliot said, knowing he was going to have a hard time explaining it before he even started. "People show up here from different times. Like the future," he finished lamely.

“Time tavel??” Suddenly Parker had a million more questions, but she decided not to ask them. She figured that Eliot probably didn’t have the answers or he wouldn’t have been there. For once in a very long time, worrying that she might bug her friend trumped her inquisitive nature.

“I almost strangled Tara and threw her off of a roof.” She confessed with a little smirk on her face that probably shouldn’t have been there due to the subject matter of the statement.

“Um,” She began, scratching the back of her neck awkwardly. “I don’t mean to be clingy. I’m not clingy, you know. It’s just...” She cleared her throat.

“If I need help for... whatever reason...” She stared into space for a second, then looking back to Eliot. “What’s your room number? Just, y’know, for emergencies.”

Parker missed Sophie. Of all of her friends in the Leverage crew back home, Sophie was the most willing to listen to Parker unload emotionally.

"That's one theory." Or more likely, the only theory. Somehow people were showing up ahead or behind others from the same place and in the case of those that appeared a few years ahead, the person there longer was somehow still there. He'd never given it much thought, with the little understanding he had of the concept in the first place, until Parker had shown up and told him he'd nearly been killed off. Eliot closed his eyes and ran a hand over his face. The longer he was in this place, the less sense it made.

He opened his eyes and glanced at Parker in surprise. "So she betrayed us?" He'd had his doubts about the grifter, even with the recommendation from Sophie. She'd conned them first, introduced herself second. For someone like Eliot, who had a hard time trusting people in the first place, that didn't make him want to put much confidence in her. If Parker was almost throwing people off of roofs, she had to have done something to him.

At least, he hoped.

"You're not being clingy, Parker." Suddenly in a different world - dimension, whatever they were calling it - his first instinct would have been to stick with someone he knew, someone he trusted too. Only he'd shown up alone. Still, there were a few people in the complex that had earned his trust and respect. "I'm up in 206."

While he knew she was capable of taking care of herself, just because they were in another place completely didn't mean he was going to stop doing what he always did for them - make sure they stayed safe. Place like this, he felt like it was going to be a hell of a challenge.

“I thought she did.” Parker nodded, recalling the look of absolute fear in Tara’s eyes at that moment when Parker had her by the throat. She would have killed her, too, if it wasn’t for finding out that she was truly on the side of the crew. “She turned out to be okay.”

“Are we going to stop the world from ending?” She asked in a way that might have been considered naive. How on Earth was a small band of people going to stop something as big as the world ending? Granted, some of them had gifts, but it just didn’t seem likely. For as honest and up-front as Parker was, she just wanted to hear something that might comfort her a bit.

"Great." It was a better scenario than Tara having turned on them and gotten them into deeper shit than they already were. Nate did that well enough on his own, without the betrayal. Maybe she proved herself to them later on, but until he saw that for himself, he was going to remain skeptical.

Her question was met with silence. Eliot took a few steps back and leaned against the wall. "People here are going to try," he said after a moment. He wasn't going to sugarcoat it for her, not when he had his own doubts. "There's people that aren't exactly normal, which should help. People who should know what they're doing." Or should have known what they were doing.

"It's going to be a hell of a fight," he said finally, "but this is a pretty scrappy crew."

It was an honest enough response and Parker appreciated that. She nodded a little, looking uncharacteristically meek at the moment. Though she seemed still on the surface her mind was still buzzing.

“I need to get food.” She stated matter-of-factly, completely jumping from the topic of the impending apocalypse to snacks. “There’s probably a store around here somewhere.”

Parker just looked at Eliot, not really showing any emotion but inwardly feeling incredibly grateful to have an ally in the strange place she was in. She had an urge to hug him and kind of moved as if she was going to, but ultimately she held her ground and resisted the impulse.

“Thank you.”

For once, the sudden change of topic didn't bother him. There were constant reminders around the complex, it was always being brought up in conversation. He preferred the short, to the point, honest conversation.

"You're welcome," he replied quietly. Eliot pushed away from the wall, starting for the stairs again. As he walked, he turned to face Parker, moving backwards. "Find a room and give me a few minutes. I'll show you where the store is."

It would have been just as easy to give her directions, but it got him out of the complex for a while and he could find that amulet he'd been given to ward off possession. Hopefully Parker would have more luck with it than he had.

Parker nodded. She turned on heel and then made her way down the hall eyeing each door to the apartments like the whole thing was like a shell game, like she had to pick the right unlocked door on blind faith. Her eyes narrowed like they had a habit of doing when she was determined about something. She stopped at room 108 and jiggled the knob, smiling just slightly when she found it unlocked and vacant.

At first glance it looked safe enough. It was certainly more than she had in Boston, though it didn’t make her miss Boston any less. She stepped further into the apartment, quietly shutting the door behind her, and looked about for anything slightly suspicious. Ducking down, she took a look under the bed, looking for anything that might have stood out. She ran a hand under the tables for bugs or recording devices. Her being slightly paranoid had saved her on more than one occasion before she’d found herself in Kansas. She couldn’t think of any reason why she should abandon her cautious ways in this place.

She ducked into the bathroom and turned on the lights to get a good look at herself in the mirror. There was a little bit of dust on her shirt from crawling in the air duct, but that was easily fixed. Parker splashed a little bit of water on her face. This was her new home. This was where she’d live until she was either sent back or until the world ended. It was grim just thinking about it.

Parker grabbed her keys and shoved them into her pocket along with the cash she’d lifted right before arriving. She briefly considered tucking it somewhere in her new apartment, but she didn’t know what she would be buying on her outing and decided it would be best to be financially prepared. She locked her door behind her and made her way back to the staircase. Eliot was in room 206. She’d committed that to memory. Instead of just walking into the room like she might have done under normal circumstances, Parker knocked lightly on the door.

While Parker scouted out the rooms on the first floor, Eliot jogged up the stairs to the second floor. With no idea how long it was going to take her to pick something and get acquainted, he dropped his keys on the nearest surface, grabbed some clean clothes and headed back to the bathroom. After a quick shower, he got dressed and ran his fingers through his damp hair as he headed back to the bedroom area.

He pulled out the drawer in the bedside table, searching through the odds and ends he'd picked up in the time he'd been in Lawrence. Finally, he located the anti-possession amulet he'd been given the first time he'd shown up. Since he'd gotten the tattoo, he was passing it on to Parker. The last thing he wanted was for her to end up as one of the possessed.

Eliot had just pulled on his second boot when he heard the knock at the door. Tying the laces, he grabbed his keys and pulled open the door. "Find one?" he asked as he shut the door and locked it behind him. He held out the amulet on its cord to her. "Here. Wear that when you leave the complex. It'll keep the demons out."

“108,” Parker nodded, taking the amulet from Eliot. She dangled the thing in front of her, giving it a good once-over. With a tiny smile, she slipped it over her head so that it was showing over her shirt. She looked back up to Eliot, smile gone.

“What’ll you wear to keep demons out?” She looked a little worried. “And by ‘keep the demons out’ you mean that otherwise they could get in?” Her eyebrows raised a little. “Like The Exorcist?”

Parker frowned as she pictured herself with matted hair, throwing up pea soup at some elderly priest. It did not make for a very pleasant image.

"The demons here possess people. Slip in, push you to the back, and take over," he explained. "Like being stuck in a small room with no way out, only worse because you can see and hear everything going on and can't do a damn thing to stop it." No matter how hard he'd fought, the only thing that had put him back in control was exorcising the demon.

"The amulet is one way of keeping 'em out. There's a tattoo that works the same way. The last time I was in a fight, I lost it so I got the tattoo." If he was going to have to keep fighting, he wasn't taking that risk again.

He started for the stairwell. "There's a grocery store a few blocks over."

Somehow Eliot’s description of demonic possession sounded even more horrifying than the images Parker had stuck in her mind from watching late night movies. She was suddenly even more grateful for the amulet he had given her as a gift. Hopefully it would work marvelously and she would never have to know what it felt like to have some weird kind of hellspawn take over her body.

She followed Eliot close behind down the staircase, eventually catching up to the point where she could walk beside him.

“Do you still cook?” She looked at him curiously, stuffing her hands in her pockets. “Here, I mean? You were a pretty good cook back home.”

After the serious turn the conversation had taken, Eliot appreciated the change in topic. "Of course I do. Gotta have something to do around here that isn't all doom and gloom." And he'd earned a small reputation around the complex for it.

"There's a couple of people around here that are pretty decent at it." Back on the ground floor, he headed for the door. Once he'd pushed open the door and stepped out, he held it open for Parker.

"That a subtle inquiry?"

Parker stepped out of the building, looking back at Eliot.

“I was just hoping you did. It’s nice having something be the same as things were in Boston. And I like your food.” She smiled a little. Parker liked being friends with Eliot for lots of reasons and his cooking was a kind of plus. Though she enjoyed a diet of Rocket O’s and fortune cookies, variety was a nice thing to have in one’s life.

“Do you have friends here?” It was easy to get back in the habit of asking questions. Parker was inquisitive by nature and, though she suspected that asking too much wasn’t something that gets a person well-liked, the inquiries just kept rolling off of her tongue.

He did miss those little meals where they all ate together. It had been a long time since Eliot had let someone, not to mention a group of people, close enough to enjoy something like that. While he did it for fun anyway, it was nice to know the effort was appreciated. "What are you feeling in the mood for tonight?" Since they were headed to the store, he might as well.

"A couple." He glanced over at her, grinning. "Made friends with an FBI agent." Who didn't know he was hanging out with a thief, but Eliot wasn't about to announce that. It didn't matter if his slate had been wiped clear here.

“FBI?” A second or two passed. Parker, momentarily, looked a little bit confused. “I thought that FBI weren’t too cozy with the idea of people breaking the law.” She laughed a little bit, finding the friendship kind of funny. After she considered Nate’s relationship with Maggie, though, she decided that moral people mingling with thieves wasn’t totally insane.

All thoughts of befriending morally strong people were soon pushed out of her mind by thoughts of a good meal. Parker’s face lit up a bit as she mulled over what she’d be having for dinner.

“Something with noodles!” She burst out with crazy eyes and a finger pointing at Eliot. “Something good,” She nodded definitively.

"They aren't. He doesn't know." It wasn't that he'd lied about it either. Eliot had been fairly honest but had left out a few details, implying otherwise. "There's not too many people here who didn't come from someplace that had all this supernatural shit. Might as well join up with the people on the same learning curve you are."

Most of the complex didn't know, for that matter, and he liked it that way. Some people laid it all out on arrival but even without all the bounties on his head and warrants out for his arrest, he didn't feel like making that announcement. It wasn't like he was working here, aside from the defibrillator. And the jewelry during the damn kryptonite incident.

He arched an eyebrow, looking over at her. "Like I'd make you something bad?"

Parker thought of a saying she’d heard once. It was something about lies of omission still being lies, but she’d never lived by it or even believed it so she didn’t think it worth mentioning. She wasn’t the ‘do as I say, not as I do’ kind of person one sees so often in the world.

“The woman who showed me to the apartments? Bela? I think she might be a thief.” Parker felt pretty certain of her evaluation. “And maybe a friend.” She added in a slightly lower voice. In the real world, at least before she met Nate and the gang, she’d never felt a need to make friends. Most of her work as a thief was done solo and it had worked out for her just fine. Suddenly, though, being dumped in a world that was ending made her feel like she needed someone on her side.

She simply shrugged at Eliot’s comment regarding his cooking. “I’m not saying you fix bad stuff. I’m just saying...”

"What makes you say that? The friend part." He didn't doubt her when it came to judging the woman's occupation. What was the phrase of choice, takes one to know one? Parker was observant, her world view was just weirder than the norm. But over the past couple of years, working with the crew, he knew enough to trust her observance by now. At least, when he understood it.

He shrugged off the comment. "I'll think of something." He glanced down the street before heading across it. A pack of little old ladies were headed their way, chatting away. A few looked their way and smiled, which Eliot returned. He waited until they were behind them to turn back to Parker.

"The team's still together? All of us?" He'd been wondering since realizing that there was a lot of time between the last thing he remembered and the last thing she remembered. He felt ridiculous asking but given what he'd seen in the past year, it was one of the saner questions he'd asked.

“She’s either a friend or really smart and biding her time to do something bad.” With that having been said, a little seed of doubt began to germinate in Parker’s mind. She would have to be careful around Bela. That was nothing new, though. It was usually the same protocol she followed when she first met anyone.

“She saw I had lots of money and didn’t try to get it. I would have taken it.” That was the truth. It was a rare occasion for Parker to pass up money. Money was probably her favorite thing, or at least near the top of her list of favorite things. “She was honest, too, and she didn’t have to help me out.”

“Oh, yeah, we’re all back together.” Parker smiled wistfully, thinking of the rest of the crew back home. “Sophie came back and Nate’s out of jail.” Other than being blackmailed into working for that awful woman, things were going well. Parker didn’t even want to bring up the blackmail. There was such a thing as too much bad news and she thought that Eliot had lots of bad things on his mind as it was.

"Until she proves otherwise, I'd go with the second part." She'd given good enough reasons but people did just about anything to earn the trust of someone else before they screwed them over. Or maybe Bela was just being straightforward and honest. "It's hard to tell with some people around here, more than the usual."

Eliot stopped suddenly, staring at Parker. "What do you mean, Nate's out of jail?" Sophie had left before he'd ended up in this place, so hearing that she had come back wasn't a surprise. Maybe something of a relief. But Nate in jail? "How'd he end up in jail in the first place?" As much as Eliot might've said otherwise, protecting the team was his responsibility and he never would have left someone behind for the police.

It couldn't have been a con. He didn't think Parker would have mentioned it so casually as the team still being together if it had been. "He did something stupid, didn't he?"

Parker stopped along with Eliot. It was strange having to update him, but what wasn’t strange about this new world?

“We got caught.” She sighed. “Long story short, Nate made a deal. He’d give information if the rest of us were spared. It was crazy getting him out of there, too.” Parker nodded, eyes slightly wider than usual. She had a lot of impressive jobs on the list she kept in her head, but getting Nate out was one of the more fulfilling jobs she’d done with the crew. Nate was as good as family and Parker took defending her family very seriously.

“It was nice of him, but, yeah, kind of stupid.” She wrinkled her nose a bit.
