Parker knew that doing side-jobs was frowned on by all members of her crew, but sometimes she got an insatiable urge to steal something and more often than not it was no easy task. She had stolen the Polar Star Diamond, the Roslaind Diamond, and the Gem of Gibraltar, but it had all been quite boring by her standards. Parker was close to being completely sick and tired of gems. This time she was after cash.
She stood in awe of the giant biometric safe. This would require a fingerprint and her fine-tuned old-fashioned safe cracking skills. She kind of wished that her friends were there with her to face the challenge. It would have made a great story to talk about at the bar.
Using a trick she’d relied on many times before, she lifted a fingerprint to gain access to the safe and then slowly, with remarkable patience, began to turn the dial. She pressed a palm and an ear to the safe’s door so that she could more easily hear the clicks that would give away the combination.
Parker took a step back as the door opened, her eyes widening slightly. She hadn’t done much research on the man who owned the safe, just the safe itself. All she’d known were the rumors that the man kept insane amounts of cash. It seemed a little bit like a trap, truthfully, but the sight of crisp bills clouded Parker’s judgement a great deal. She grinned and stepped inside, planting little kisses on the money. Mid-kiss, though, she froze.
The sound of two pairs of heavy boots became clearer. Parker turned on heel to high-tail it out of there, but found herself frozen again for just a moment. Deciding that she’d regret it if she escaped with nothing to show for her little adventure, she grabbed two small stacks of hundreds. She tried to hurry and shut the safe door, looking around the foyer just outside of the safe for an emergency exit. The only glaringly obvious exit was through a ventilation shaft, but with no other options she jumped, pulling the grate away so that her small form could slip inside, and suddenly she was overcome with a lightheaded feeling. The possibility that the exit could have been flooded with some kind of gas as a security measure crossed her mind, but soon she couldn’t even think clearly.
Parker was pretty sure that she was sliding downward, like on a playground slide, and then she felt nothing but asphalt beneath her. Slowly she sat up, brushing some stray bits of gravel from her cheek. She took another look at herself. She was wearing the black shirt and pants she’d worn breaking into the safe. More importantly, she was still holding on to the cash. Parker lifted the bills to her nose and took in a deep sniff. The smell was unmistakeable - It was real money and it brought a smile to her face. She jammed it in her pocket and stood up.
Judging from the amount of time she’d been out, it seemed to Parker that she should still have been in Boston, but the signs said otherwise. Her eyes rested on one sign in particular - Lawrence, KA.
“No way.” Her jaw dropped slightly. Now this was getting weird.
