WHO: Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley
WHAT: Even with the arguing, they really are better together
WHEN: after her comm post
WHERE: Ron's motel
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In progress

There were advantaged to being raised Muggle. Despite the abuse Hermione got from the more horrible Pure bloods, it did mean that she was more than capable of adapting to being suddenly in Laurence, Kansas. Little things like reacting quickly to changing her English money into American dollars, and knowing how to do simple things like getting a taxi to a motel address.

Other things were harder to adjust to, like the idea of having a daughter only a month or so younger than she was. A daughter with Ron.

Ron who could infuriate her like no one else in, well, any world. Bringing up Viktor like that and acting like having a child with her was the most repulsive thing imaginable. Which was not true, Hermione had seen the most repulsive thing imaginable. Ron snogging Lavender at every opportunity. That had made her feel just sick to her stomach every time. And like her heart was being trampled on. It was very confusing.

Still, as much as she was wanting to hit him, it did actually make sense to go and join him. Plus, Hermione wanted to see him. Make sure he was actually alright.

She paid the taxi driver and climbed out of the car, taking a deep breath before finding Ron's room number, and knocking on the door, slightly apprehensively.

The room that Ron had booked for himself was hardly worth much. There was a bed, an odd box on a stand in the corner, a sink, a box that was cold when you stuck your head in it, and a bathroom. The room only lit up when one messed with the flippy thing beside the door and the box in the corner had started to yell at him when he sat on the rectangular object that he had tossed onto his bed earlier on. There was still a man on the screen barking various tidbits about the weather at him and Ron, in all his confusion, found himself oddly fascinated by the fact that he would not, no matter how many items he threw it him, respond. He didn't even get angry! It was both fascinating and downright infuriating at the same time. What kind of device was that?

Watching the man blabber on, Ron stretched out on his bed, digging into the bag of chips he had picked up from the store earlier on. He had far too much junk food spread all around him, none of which he imagined could be close to qualified as actual food.

It still tasted good. Ron liked that.

Knowing that Hermione would be coming along shortly - and thank Merlin for that, as Ron was getting awfully lonely holed up here on his own - Ron cast occasional anxious looks at the door. He was still surprised by the fact that she wasn't furious with him. Her being from the past and all, he supposed, helped him avoid that.

...or at least it had at first. Arguing didn't seem to wait very long when it came to the two of them, did it?

When she knocked, Ron instantly hopped up from his bed and bolted over to the door. He pulled it open, looking plenty pleased to see Hermione standing on the other side. "It's about time!"

Hermione arched an eyebrow as Ron opened the door. "Well I came as quickly as I could. It's not like I'm going to try Apparating in a strange city in some alternative dimension. Anything could happen." She wasn't a huge fan of the idea of splinching herself over here.

She looked faintly perturbed at him as she walked into the room, glancing around at the mess the place was in with a faint tutting sound followed by a muttered "oh honestly."

After a faint pause she pulled out her wand and made a couple of small gestures, sending the rubbish into the bin and tidying the still edible food into one, neat pile. Grabbing the television remote, she turned the weather man off before she turned to actually look at Ron.

"What happened to your arm?" She frowned with concern as she noticed the bandage. If Ron had been getting himself hurt again, she was going to be really upset. Well, annoyed. Really.

Ron, as if on cue, rolled his eyes at her reaction. It was typical of her to get her knickers in a twist over the conditions of his living environment. She always did back at the Burrow and certainly didn't hold back on him when they were all living out of the same tent.

The tent that he ran away from. There really was no use in thinking too much on that one. Ron sighed and shut the door behind her, watching her go at cleaning things up with another roll of his eyes. Speaking of typical!

She had him on that one with the Apparating, at least. Anything could happen. Like, for example, accidentally splinching onself. Ron glanced down at his arm at the question and shrugged sheepishly. "I tried to get out of here in a real hurry when I first got around," he explained, "it's no big deal, really. I found a healer and she patched me up right quick. Didn't even have to put the stitches in!"

Which, of course, he was very grateful for. The last thing that Ronald Weasley ever wanted to endure was the terrifying process of having someone sew his arm up. It was downright barbaric!

For some reason Hermione wasn't even surprised that Ron had tried to do something like Apparate out of Laurence and whether it was because of that or because of genuine concern, she didn't repeat the tuts of disapproval. Instead she frowned, reached for his arm gently.

"Let me see," the bossy tone was gone from her voice and it was almost soft as she spoke to him. "From the sounds of it you're quite lucky the doctor didn't want to give you stitches." Not that stitches were nearly as bad as Ron clearly believed. Muggles had gotten by with them for a long time. Hermione suspected that they might all have to get used to doing some things the Muggle way around here.

"So," she started with a small, half smile. "You happen to do any other stupid things since you arrived here?"

He didn't look as exasperated with her as he had before when Hermione started reaching for him. Sorely tempted to shrug her off and retreat to the other side of the room to avoid making show of himself, Ron stood awkwardly in place and lifted his arm up a bit. "It's nothing, really," he pressed, "the heal - doctor, she did something or another to it and it's been doing all right." He had not needed stitches afterward, either way, and that was the important thing. Stupid stitches.

Ron tried not to look too pleased when that small smile of hers made an appearance. Merlin, when was the last time he had seen that, even before he ran off on her and Harry?

"I possibly offended my potential family," Ron informed her. "And by possibly, I mean definitely. But the hopeful thing is that they're really Death Eaters. Then I wouldn't have made as big of a git of myself as I reckon I might have."

Whoever this doctor was, she'd done an adequate job, and Hermione let out a sigh of relief. The wound looked cared for at least, even if it was pretty nasty. "Would you like me to heal that up properly for you?" She offered, still with that small smile on her face. There was a little part of her tempted to let him heal the Muggle way to discourage him from attempting anything so foolish again. But then she felt bad at watching him still being in pain, when she could make it better for him.

"You realise they're probably not Death Eaters," she pointed out, reproachfully. "After all, we're from different points in time, if only slightly, so why can't they be from years in the future? And Rose knows things about me only my family would really know." She put on a bright smile. "So you have been as big a git as you think you've been."

She wanted to heal him up? Well! Who be it from him to stop her when she so CLEARLY wanted to make things all better! "Yes." A pause and a look of uncertainty were soon to follow. "Please?" There. Manners. He used those sometimes.

"Because...they're claiming to be..." Ron frowned. His argument had been sound upon arrival, but what excuse beyond 'weird' did he have now? Ah, that's right. "They're claiming to be our kids! Or one of them is. I can buy it with Harry and Ginny; the way he mopes over her when we're out working at those horcruxes is terribly obvious, but me? And you? And children?" He put on a laugh. "Impossible. Insane."

Hermione tried to look reproving even if she did smile a bit. At least he added the please, Mrs Weasley would have approved. Hermione took out her wand and held it in her right hand, taking Ron's arm in her left, easing off the bandage. "Episkey" the healing spell was directed at the injury.

She wasn't sure why it stung so much, to have Ron dismiss the idea of them ever having children together that much. "Well I don't know Ron," she responded, a touch more snappy than she meant to be. "But James and Lily seem to be telling the truth about being Harry and Ginny's children and Rose seems to be honest. I don't know how it could have happened either, but clearly in some other timeline we did." That had been what that Brennan woman had talked about after all, different versions and timelines.

"Doesn't mean it'll happen to us or anything."

Ron winced when she cast her spell - the healing process was never all that fun - but when it was good and over with the injury that had been bothering him for a large number of days had vanished entirely. Looking incredibly relieved, Ron ran a hand over the smoothed out skin that had taken place of the wound and immediately shot Hermione a sheepish look. "Thanks, 'Mione."

Looking a bit brighter, both because Hermione was here and his arm was in better shape, Ron flopped down onto the edge of his bed and snatched up a bag of chips. "Alternate timeline or not, my money is on us being completely tossed if we ever do have kids together. It's not something that we'd ever do. We'd have had to have had ten buckets of firewhiskey, plus be blindfolded twice over before even coming near one another like that."

He was exaggerating. Incredibly so. But that was the point of being in denial, wasn't it? At least to her.

Of course her spell was perfect. She'd been careful as she healed him, the concern for his well being also being added to by her no small sense of pride at her own magic. "You're welcome."

She arched an eyebrow at him before sitting on the very edge of the bed, with as much distance between them as possible, eying the junk food dubiously. She would give anything for a fresh pumpkin pasty right now. "Well, I'm sorry you find the idea of children with me to be quite so repulsive," she retorted, her tone decidedly frosty. "I'll be sure to make sure it doesn't happen in our timeline. I'm sure Rose will understand."

It hurt, having him talk like that. It was like seeing him snogging Lavender Brown all over again and irrationally, Hermione wished Viktor was there, so she could give Ron a taste of his own medicine.

Ron flexed his arm out a bit. If he didn't know any better, which he did, Ron would almost be able to assume that Hermione was offended by his comment on them not having children together. Did she want the opposite? Did Hermione want to marry him? Be his wife? Eventually have his children? With a handful of chips stuffed into his mouth, Ron frowned off at her in confusion. That guide to women and all of their insanity really would have been useful right about now.

"Good," Ron concluded through a mouthful of food, deciding not to press it much farther. "Glad that's settled."

He reached over and snatched up a pack of Twinkies. "Here," he offered, tossing them toward her. "Dig in. Dinner is served."

Right, it was settled and Hermione had to suppress the urge to create more canaries to throw at his head. It stung, it really did, but then she knew she'd just have to get over it. She wasn't even sure where all this had come from or when it had started, but she knew she wanted these stupid feelings gone. They just made everything too complicated.

She caught the pack of Twinkies, eying them doubtfully.

"Do these actually have any nutritional content?"

"Not really, no," Ron told her, smirking. "That's sort of the best part, isn't it?" Ron didn't mind a good solid meal either, but he had been lacking in the motivation to go out and look for a decent diner or something of that level to eat. Maybe with Hermione here, he'd be more determined about it. "Don't complain. It's food. Sit down and have a bit. There's other stuff here too, see?"

There was indeed. His entire bed was covered with snack foods. It was enough to get him by for the next few days, though Ron imagined that with Hermione here these would likely be shoved off into some corner while they found something else.

So long as it wasn't any of that outdoors rubbish that they had been eating while in the tent. No mushrooms from the ground, no fish that they had to work hard to get, nothing. Warm, cooked food. Just the way Ron liked it.

"The best part is the no nutritional content?" Hermione shook her head and took a dubious, small bite of the Twinkie. It was adequate, she supposed, but hardly anything as good as the fresh, real food of home, and she could only imagine what her parents would say about that amount of sugar rotting her teeth.

"And in your bid to buy all the junk food America has ever produced, it didn't occur to you to buy some real food?" She picked up some of the packets on the bed, garish designs and bright promises hiding not very much that was actually edible.

"You know what your mother would say about this."

"Yes, I know what my mother would say about this," Ron groaned. "I'd know because she's standing right here in this room with me, griping about food that I've offered her." Rolling his eyes, Ron tossed the bag of chips aside and looked up at her with an exasperated look on his face. "What do you want me to do then, Hermione? I've only got but so many galleo - er, dollars left. I dunno what to spend it on."

Food was expensive. Buying things that were at a corner store for cheap really was the easiest way to go for a guy who didn't even know how much money he had. Or, you know, how to work it half the time.

"Oh I am not your mother, Ronald," Hermione exclaimed, as exasperated as he seemed to be and entirely missing the irony of using his full name just as Molly Weasley did. "I suppose the idea of maybe buying some fruit entirely passed you by?"

She wasn't being sarcastic...alright, she was being somewhat sarcastic, but it was overlaying no small amount of concern. What would Ron have done if she hadn't been brought here too? The idea that he couldn't look after himself worried her. More than she cared to admit.
