Clearly, there was something she wanted to tell him; he was completely baffled as to what was going on. If she had bad news, he would know by now, but he had already discarded that notion. If she had good news, surely she would not be hesitant to share it. Had one of this place's weird events happened? If so, it had been quick; hopefully, that would mean it was also painless.
Finally, she gave him a vague answer and a box. Glancing at her in confusion, it took him a moment to drop his eyes to the package-- and then, his gaze immediately shot back up to hers. She still seemed jumpy, rather than pleased, so it must not have given her the result she wanted. The excitement that had raced through him at first turned to disappointment. Was she just telling him that she had suspected, but was incorrect? She had been under the weather lately, but many people were. Quickly, he thought back over the last few weeks-- and nearly broke out into a grin. He had not even noticed, with so much going on.
But, he remained uncertain due to her lack of enthusiasm, so he tried to stifle the grin, telling himself not to get ahead of things. "It tells me half the story," he replied, feeling the corners of his mouth twitch despite his efforts. After all, even if it turned out that nothing had happened yet, this was just another step towards it, and that was exciting, too.
