Sam refused to let Ruby blame herself for this. She had done nothing wrong. In this situation, Ruby was the victim. Sam had drained her dry, he had almost killed her off out of sheer blood loss, and he had tried to attack her to boot. It wasn't right, it wasn't fair, and he wouldn't have held it against her if she had decided to ditch him for the way that he had treated her. Allowing Ruby to blame herself for all of this in addition to that wasn't going to be tolerated. Sam couldn't do it. He gripped her tightly in his arms and shook his head, an insistent look daring to take hold of the worried, panicked look that he'd been wearing before. "Don't do that," he said sharply, "don't you dare blame yourself for any of this. I should have asked for more when you were giving it to me. It was my mistake, not yours, so don't you dare start blaming yourself for this. My appetite is getting bigger, Ruby. I...if I had known..." He drew in a deep breath, eyes closing briefly. "You didn't do anything. Don't blame yourself. Please." It wasn't going to make anything better. At the most, Sam was going to end up feeling more guilty than before with the way that Ruby was behaving. She didn't need to put this on herself. Ruby had been nothing but good to him; she hadn't deserved the way that Sam had treated her now. What kind of a person acted this way around the one that they loved? He couldn't get over the fact that she could've died if he hadn't found a footing of control over himself. If not from the blood loss, then because of him losing himself afterward. Snapping at her, grabbing onto the demon in that cold, uncontrollable anger...
"I'll stay with you," he promised, nodding. Rather than clinging to her right then and there, Sam shifted on the bed, lifting Ruby so that she was settled on the mattress rather than in his lap. He wanted to make her comfortable. Sam slid off the bed and moved around to the side, reaching out to pull her boots off her feet. He took them off one by one, set them beside the bed, then grabbed the blanket and pulled it over her. "I'm gonna wipe this off," Sam said, gesturing to his bloody face. "Then I'll sit with you, okay? Do you want something to drink? I think you should have something to drink." There was water in the room. He had a couple bottles of that in the fridge. Then if she got hungry, he'd order them something to eat. She needed to get her strength up again. Sam didn't wait for Ruby to respond to his questions. He went into the little kitchen area, soaked up a rag, and rubbed at his face with it. When the blood was gone, he pulled the fridge open and snatched up one of the waters. Twisting the bottle open, Sam carefully sat down on the bed beside Ruby, pulled her back so that she was slightly settled against his chest again. Once that was done, Sam offered the bottle to her. "Go on. Drink a little."
