Who: Adam and Hermione
What: Attempting that good deed thing
Where: Street
When: Morning
Rating: TBD
Status: Incomplete

After the night he'd had, Adam needed all the coffee he could get. After the bar had closed, he'd stuck around to help the owner and a couple of the other guys do inventory. That had been the plan anyway. It had turned into shots and stories into the early hours. He hadn't even been back to his apartment yet, swinging by the nearest coffee shop to get a cup to go before he headed back. The smell of freshly made coffee was enough to knock a second wind into him as he exited the shop and started down the street.

Glancing up over the lid of the cup as he took a drink, his attention was drawn to the guy in a suit and overcoat talking loud enough that anyone who was trying to avoid listening in on the conversation didn't have much of a choice. He rolled his eyes and tilted the cup up, taking a long swallow of coffee. As he lowered the glass, he noticed the guy didn't seem to be paying attention to much else than the phone conversation and he was heading right for the street.

There was a van barreling along down the road and he wasn't seeing it. Adam lunged for the guy, but his foot caught on a crack in the sidewalk and he crashed to the ground. He did manage to grab the guy's pant leg, pulling him up short just as the van went flying by. Unfortunately, the guy didn't see it and turned on Adam, glaring down at him. "What the hell is your problem?" he snapped. Adam released his pant leg and held up his hands. Giving him another dark look, he resumed his conversation and stormed off across the crosswalk.

"You're welcome!" Adam called sarcastically and pushed up to his knees.

Days existed where Hermione wanted nothing more than to hide in the basement of the library, going through the old magazines and newspapers, searching for clues that this town had seen such an odd agglomeration of people from different times and places. It was soothing, rifling through brittle, yellow-stained pages for any hint that the phenomenon had occurred before. And then there days like this one, where she was ready to call quits well before she got started.

These were the days she walked slowly to work, detouring for a good cup of tea to try and cheer her up. She kept her head bent as she hugged her jacket tight around her chest and nearly strode right into a man shouting across the road.

She glanced at the passing van and the two strangers, trying to piece together what had just happened to send someone to their knees.

"Are you all right?"

After doing an unintentional belly flop in the snow, his shirt was wet and covered with that salt they threw down to keep people from slipping on the ice. Adam made sound of disgust and batted what he could off his shirt. "Great. At least it happened after work," he murmured. He was oblivious to another person being nearby until he heard her voice. Then it took a moment to realize shew as addressing him.

"Huh?" He glanced over at her. A smile quickly followed. "Yeah, I'm fine. No damage done." He rose to his feet and leaned over to brush at the grime on the knees of his jeans. "I just forgot that whole adage about how no good deed goes unpunished." Or maybe that only happened with the seriously self-absorbed people who didn't realize they were about to be pancaked by a van that had the right of way.

"Thanks for asking though. That was nice of you," he added after.

And thus all the puzzle pieces clicked into place with a quiet snap that was quite satisfying to her. She sighed and waved off the thanks with a small smile. He was soaked through in nippy weather and Hermione had the presence of mind to realize that she could reward him for saving a man from being crushed by passing vehicle.

"Anyone would." Or should. Hermione knew from experience they wouldn't and only precious few people did actively care about the well being of others and even they had moments where they slipped up and became uncaring.

She shook her head and gestured at his shirt with her wand. "Let me?"

The relaxed standards for magic in this town never ceased to fascinate her and for all she knew this was a normal person. An average one who had no clue what the town housed, but chances were he wasn't. Average people simply didn't stop to rescue people from passing vans.

If he was, however, he'd think she was mental or possibly a person in costume, or one with some strange fetish. Either way it would be his loss.

"Apparently not," he said, nodding in the direction that the other guy had gone. He had long since disappeared, probably still yelling at whoever was on the other end of that phone. "Although I am thinking I should have let the guy get pancaked and save the world an ass but-" He waved a hand. "Couldn't do it."

When she pulled out her wand, an eyebrow arched. He wasn't expecting that but if she had the magic to back it up, he wasn't going to complain. It beat walking back to his apartment with a wet shirt on a blustery day. It was also easier than trying to manipulate his own abilities without setting his clothing on fire. That hadn't happened since he'd gotten really good with his abilities but the day he was already having, he wasn't going to chance it.

He lifted the sides of his coat, giving her a clear shot at his t-shirt. "Hit me with your best shot," he said, the grin returning. This should have been strange but with the arrivals this town had, it was becoming the norm. Who was it that used the wands?

"You're a better person for making the attempt. Letting him get crushed wouldn't weigh well on your conscience."

Hermione relaxed by the smallest degree. That answered that then. He knew what she was about to do, or at the very least, anticipated something close. She smiled and cast the warming and drying spells one after the other with a simple precision and definitive pleasure at seeing the spells accomplish their tasks.

"There. That's much better looking."

She paused, tapping her want against her hip for a moment, before casting the lightest cleaning charm she knew at the man's knees because no one truly longed for starched pants. Hermione pocketed her wand in her jacket and folded her arms back across her chest.

"See, I was thinking how I probably would have been better off letting one you know what remove himself from the evolutionary pool. Now that I'm hearing this, I'm feeling bad about even thinking that," Adam joked, shaking his head. She was right, he never could have let that happen. It didn't mean there was some temptation with the treatment he'd gotten after. How had the guy not seen how close he came to certain flattening?

He was used to magic to a degree. It was nothing he could use but his best friend, among others, happened to be well acquainted with the usage. He was used to it being used on him, especially when Paige deemed he was getting out of hand and used a binding spell on him. He was almost certain most of the time, Savannah did it just because she could. Practice his ass.

The spell she was doing, however, was one of those ones he wished he could do because it was handy. In little time, his clothing was warm and dry, just like it had come out of the dryer. She'd even tossed in something to clean his pants. "Feels better too," he replied, running a hand over his shirt. "You are awesome. Thanks for the quick clean." Glancing up, he held out his hand to her. "I'm Adam."

Boys. Hermione rolled her eyes and took little offense to his joking comment, because there were people in the world she felt could use the same sort of self-punishment for their own innate stupidity. However, if she saw someone about to be flattened into the pavement, she wouldn't have hesitated to try and stop them from crossing the street either.

"You're welcome." The spells weren't much trouble and ones she'd perfected over the past eight years of her life. Between living in a forest, running around Australia, and living with Ron some spells became an every day neccessity.

She reached for his outstretched hand and shook it. "Hermione."

Now she was really starting to remind him of Paige. Her reaction to the comment was not unlike the one he had gotten out of his best friend time and time again for some of the comments he made. The reaction wasn't an unfair one either. "Sorry," he said, although his expression lacked any sign that he really was sorry. "That filter between my mind and mouth only works half the time."

So that was why she seemed familiar. Either her parents were huge Harry Potter fans - which was highly doubtful given she could actually do magic - or he was actually talking to the Hermione Granger. "Nice to meet you, Hermione," he said as he shook her hand. "You came along at the right moment." Releasing her hand, he slipped his into his pockets.

"So are you one of the, ah, out of towners?" A stupid question but he didn't want to mention the books. She'd probably heard enough about it since arrival. That and he'd only seen the movies. And read that one chapter in the one book.
