He wanted to make her better. Hell, Sam wanted to make everything better for her. Seeing her hurt was like a personal blow on his part. When she was hurt, so was he and Sam knew that two people like themselves - two people who, technically, weren't even supposed to know each other the way they felt they did - were not meant to feel that way. But Sam couldn't pretend that those feelings weren't there. He couldn't ignore how awful he felt when he saw her crying at her door when he arrived. She wasn't supposed to cry. A face that beautiful wasn't meant to be ruined with tears. "I can make you better," Sam replied, instinctively reaching out to smooth his fingers across her cheek. "If you let me try."
He'd work with Ruby to prove that whatever nonsense got put into Lauren's head was untrue. Sam would fight with that Smith guy to get rid of those monsters that were attacking everyone back at work. Then they'd move on. Sam would focus on his divorce, Ruby would focus on her daughter, and then maybe all the while they could still be...this. Whatever they were to each other. Sam couldn't say that they were just friends. They weren't just friends. Just friends didn't jump each other in the middle of an elevator at their jobs. They were...something else. Something more. Sam just wished that he could figure out what that was. There was little that Sam was certain of lately. But when it came to her? He just knew. Sam felt like this was where he belonged. Protecting Ruby, making sure that she wasn't going to fall apart. All things considered, that was pretty strange. He probably should have been doing that for his future ex-wife, but he couldn't. He just...he didn't care. Not as much about Lois' situation as Ruby's. That was messed up and he knew it, but it was how he felt. This was where he belonged. He was sure of it.
"Do you want to tell me why you were crying, Ruby?" He had no doubt that it was in relation to this entire fucked up situation. All the same, Sam wanted for her to clarify. If he was going to make her better, he certainly had to start somewhere. "Is it 'cause of Lauren?"
