Damien had been very happy lately. He was usually content after a good gym workout for an hour, though his occasional meetings with Prudence also had benefits in themselves. He was mostly glad that he had just become an uncle the night before. He just hoped his brother Jeff would be up to the task of helping watch the little guy. So long as he kept the emo music off at the time. Seriously, rap music was much better. Maybe he should see if Caroline could help. She was probably doing that anyway. But he had also felt a bit disturbed about things going on at work. Sightings of elder and silent people that seem to vanish without a trace. A couple had even gone through a wall. As if it were air! He didn't really believe in ghosts or the paranormal, he'd always been logical about most things. And yet.. it didn't seem so far out there to him when he thought of it. And then there were suicides. They should bother him. But it didn't, at least not for too long. Still felt bad for the families.
But something about this sort of thing felt quite familiar. And then there were the dreams. Always different. Always short. Some had him in a cadet outfit as a kid, while another had him in all black inside a forest with dark-robed people chanting something and kneeling. There was also fragmented images of things breaking around him. But that couldn't be, had to be a dream, just a fantasy. He sighed, shaking his head at these thoughts. He couldn't think about that now! Time to focus on work. It was currently one in the morning as he patrolled the halls on his side of his rounds for security. He had come in much earlier to cover for the rest of Mark's day since he had to go unexpectedly. He was curious as to why but filed it under things to inquire about later. He was walking down the hall when he saw one of the rooms had a slightly open door. Somebody must have forgotten to close it when they left.
He walked in, deciding to do a quick check of the area, putting the lights on as he entered. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Room still empty, everything was quiet. But then he shivered unexpectedly. Huh.. how odd. Temperature changes didn't seem to matter much to him before, plus he'd never been sick. But he definitely noticed this. He gasped when he saw the figure of an older woman ten feet away. "Excuse me.. ma'am? I'm gonna have to ask you to show me your ID pass. Otherwise, leave." His voice had trembled a little, but still forceful. A filing cabinet drawer then swung out and made contact with his head, knocking him over on his side. "Goddamn, what the f-", he nearly swore, looking up to see a flicker and the lady was much closer.
"Stay away!" he shouted, raising his hand up in defense, and slight anger and fear. Then the unthinkable happened. The drawer had came back out, but instead of stopping, came right off and ended up on the other side of a table, as well as tipping over and spilling files on the floor. There was also a couple overhead lights shattering. And then they were completely out and the room was dark, aside from moonlight through the windows. Damien's eyes soon adjusted to the dark as he struggled to finally stand up. The apparent 'ghost', if that is what it really was? No where in sight. Completely gone. He was alone once again, as if he had never seen anything. "That's it," he mumbled to himself, "Maybe I'll need to speak to a counselor after all." But first he'd have to fix the room.
So he gathered up the papers, setting them in the drawer and then picking it up to set it back in the cabinet. He went over to monkey with the light switches, but nothing happened. Power was off. He groaned annoyingly, "Oh, come ON, don't do this to me-- whoa. Hold on.." The lights had then somehow came back on in mid-sentence. Huh, that was weird. Must be a coincidence. Damien sighed as he turned the switches off and left the room after locking up. He was breathing a bit heavy for the moment. Taking more breaths, he seemed to relax a little, but still on edge. He really had no explanation for what just happened. Dammit, ghosts weren't real! Was it holograms, maybe? Were they being tested? But that couldn't be. There had been deaths, companies just didn't go that far. But it couldn't just be ghosts either. Confused, but choosing to forget it for now, he remained standing straight and resumed his patrol right in the building..
