"I will. I promise." Sam smiled softly, this one coming out a lot more real than the earlier when he'd displayed. He didn't know what it was about Ruby that he liked, but there was something there. Something that went a little above and beyond the general impression that he had of her, right along with those scattered rumors that he'd heard of her in the office. Because working in an office building gave you that: work and gossip, piled on with more work and even more gossip. It was all that people did with their lives here and it was all that Sam heard and saw outside of his wife and her general bitchiness. He'd ignore the rumors. Instead, Sam would focus on the fact that Ruby had been nice enough to go out of her way to talk to him and even help him when no one else would. That was enough to make him smile lightly for the first time in a while. Enough to make him feel like maybe he did stand a chance at making things better for him, Lois, and their children after all.
He didn't know why, but feeling her hand on his felt a lot less awkward than he thought that it would be. Not awkward. But nice. Maybe it was the drugs talking for him or something, he didn't know. But right then and there, Sam found that he felt ten times better than he would have if he'd been in the office cringing under Lois Wesson's critical glare. He almost wanted to protest when she slid her hand away, but Sam instead laced his fingers together again once more and chose to look down at them. "Yeah. We probably should." Sam twisted his mouth downward into a bit of a grimace. Back to the playing field, where Lois would be waiting. "But...thanks." Sam looked up. "Thanks for listening. And helping. If there's any way I can ever repay you..."
