If there was anything that Sam was gathering from this conversation, it was that Ruby really seemed to care about kids. He didn't know anything about her, so this didn't come off as a shock to him. It was mostly just the fact that she was here listening to him now. Listening, offering advice, actually seeming like she cared about the situation. Sam couldn't really genuinely convey how nice of a feeling he got out of that, so instead he just sat there and listened. Listening was effective too. Sam just wished that there had been someone out there to tell him and Lois this stuff before. Someone who knew what they were talking about; someone who knew that if they stuck together, they were going to end up like this. Two drug abusing parents who went about their lives hating each other because they didn't know what else to do. But would Lois see it that way? They were two entirely different people with entirely different thoughts and feelings. Lois was pretty damn stubborn and something told Sam that she wasn't going to handle any news in relation to him vocally admitting that they weren't right for each other well.
"It is smart. I know." He looked down at the ground, frowning. "But it's hard to admit, let alone face. I really thought that we could make it work. It hasn't. And I think we've been lying to ourselves about that fact for a very long time now." He looked up as her hand found his arm. He couldn't help but lower his gaze again, almost looking kind of guilty. "I do know. And that is the least of what I've resorted to in order to do so. I have problems. A lot of them." Sam shook his head and nervously tapped his fingers against the edge of the bench. "But I guess we all do, huh? Fucked up lives. I'm betting my problems don't even touch half the issues people around here seem to have. I might argue with my wife a lot and I might get lost in the need for drug related distractions, but I'm sure as hell not blind."
As for the work..."What kind of work are you talking about? Because I really don't mind avoiding the phones."
