He didn't get why she was being so nice to him. Most of the time, unless he was needed upstairs, he got ignored. It was the way that things worked around here. There was some sort of unspoken system. It was why the guys he worked with often mocked the people upstairs; corporate was filled with assholes and douchebags. That was the general feel of it. And, yeah, he knew Ruby. He had seen her in passing and every now and again they spoke about little things, but it wasn't as though she was the type of person he ever thought would be down with just standing around and talking. Not about the personal stuff. Nor did he ever imagine it would be out here. Back of the building, alone with their stress relievers. Sam cleared his throat again, watching as the tip of his joint burned.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend." Sam inhaled more of the smoke, shuffling from one foot to the other awkwardly. "and I didn't mean - why?" He looked at Ruby with a furrowed brow, eyes cautiously seeking out her own. "Why does she treat you like that? Obviously, you're doing pretty damn well for yourself." He looked down, eyes on his feet. "I imagine most parents would be proud of a woman like you." Avoiding. He was definitely avoiding. Besides, he'd much rather talk about Ruby's problems than his own. And they were already out there anyway. She had volunteered, so Sam was taking the easy way out. It was better, really. The way things were with himself and Lois, it was no secret that they were an unhappily married couple. Sam just never really talked about it with anyone. It was one of those things that he didn't mention, just because he didn't want people to judge him. He was supposed to be the perfect father. Perfect husband. And he knew that it wasn't entirely Lois' fault. It was just...bad.
"Impartial? If I actually told you, could you guarantee to stay that way?"
