If there was anyone in the world who could claim that they understood the importance of keeping family and work two desperate items, it was Sam Wesson. Having Lois on his back while he was trying to do his job was nothing short of a pain in the ass. The woman was smart and beautiful, but she was also...Lois. And Lois was the type of person that Sam found he was only able to take in doses. Having her at work with him did him no good, especially since it usually resulted in them bitching and moaning at each other about one thing or another. He couldn't even remember how she had managed to tick him off now, but Lois had cracked a nerve well enough for Sam to take off in need of a break during the middle of his shift. Now, Sam didn't smoke cigarettes. They weren't really of his taste. What he did smoke was something a bit more stronger and, in his opinion, a lot more effective. Usually he'd have to sneak off to his car to break out the illegal drugs, but the smoking area had been abandoned and Sam decided he'd take his chances. A walk to the car was a few more minutes off his break time that he didn't want to waste, so he dropped his backpack onto the pavement, bent down, and pulled out the marijuana. Not the smartest or safest thing to be smoking at work, but Sam didn't care. Wasn't like it was the worst thing that he'd taken while on the job. And right now? He really needed it.
A few hits in and Sam found that he was able to finally relax a bit. Shoulders pressed back against the wall of the building, head lazily tilted upward as he examined the sky - it was obvious that he was off guard, which was exactly why it had been so easy for him to not notice Ruby as she approached him. Not noticing her? That was easy. She was tiny and he was distracted. Not noticing her voice? That wasn't happening. Which was why as soon as he heard her speak, he jumped in wave of pure surprise and panic. "Oh, shi -" Sam straightened up and tucked the blunt behind his back - kind of a useless act, considering there was a trail of smoke streaming out from behind his shoulders. "Hi, I...uh..." He released a nervous laugh. "Miss - Ruby, right? Hi. I should...I was just...going."
