what: freya just showed up and merlin has to help his (not)dead girlfriend.
when: backdated to after this

status: incomplete

"Thank you!" Merlin dropped a couple dollars in the taxi window as grabbed his things and started sprinting down the sidewalk. He probably could have waited and let the car drop him off a little closer, but he saw the library, and there had been a stop light. Merlin was not waiting. Freya was -- she was alive. She was alive and here. She was also apparently drenched, shoeless, carrying a sword, and almost definitely afraid. When he did catch sight of her sitting on the steps outside the library, he paused. Merlin wanted to help, and running over there, clearly freaking out a lot little wouldn't make a great impression. So he took a breath and tried to walk over - try being the operative word.

"Fre - ah!" Graceful as ever, Merlin tripped over the first stair, landing at Freya's feet. The towels and sneakers flying out of his hands. He groaned and hoped she hadn't actually seen that, but he had fallen right in front of her. Merlin looked up, probably bright red, and smiled awkwardly up at her. She looked just the same, in the same dress he'd - She was drenched and it would be getting dark, and it was already a bit chilly. Merlin scrambled up again, taking one of the towels and wrapping it around her shoulders.

"Ah - Here. I'll give you some clothes when we get back, but Morgana gave me some shoes you could borrow for now." He commented quickly, but he hadn't actually let go of her. His hands still resting on her arms, holding the towel, and making sure it stayed around her. "I'm so sorry. You're okay though. I don't -- You were --"

Merlin felt ridiculous, but he couldn't help himself. She'd died, and now she was here, and not dead -- He hugged her, hiding his face in the crook of her neck even though he was certainly not crying.

Shivering in the blustery cold early evening, Freya huddled in on herself as she waited for Merlin to arrive. If it was Merlin. The sword rested beside her in the grass where every passing car struck light from it. She traced the hilt with an inquisitive finger, remembering the odd way her hands refused to unclench it when she'd arrived.

Someone spoke beside her, startling her from her thoughts and she snapped her head to the side only to see that same someone fall to the ground in a flurry of fabric, but beneath it all Merlin lay. She smiled into her dirty palm, trying to hide the reaction because Merlin was clearly flustered and she didn't want him to get angry with her.

The towel rested warm and dry around her shoulders but simple body heat had her leaning into Merlin even as he fell into her.

"You're here."

"I said I was" Merlin said, still talking against her shoulder, and not wanting to let go of her. Eventually though he did lean back after wiping his eyes on his sleeve, and catching sight of the sword at her side. He had been a little curious why she'd appeared with a sword, but when he saw it was the one he'd thrown in the same lake... People still gave them strange looks though, so he used the extra towel to wrap up the sword.

"Let's get out of here. It's getting cold." He grabbed the sneakers, holding each out one at a time for her to slip on, holding the sword, and standing up. Merlin held out a hand, after getting them another taxi. He wanted to get her back to the apartment so she could shower and change into something dry -- the last thing he wanted was her to get sick.

Which reminded him - Arthur had been asleep when he left, hopefully that hadn't changed. Merlin already planned on giving Freya his room. The only worry he had was if she still, would she still change at night? Not that he would ask and risk upsetting her, she might not even know.

"You can stay with me. Arthur and I have an apartment. You can just take my bed." He explained.

She took his hand with a wavering smile, squeezing it painfully tight as he led her to the edge of the curb and hailed down a roaring beast made from metal that sent Freya hiding behind him in alarm.

"Apartment?" she asked, fisting the back of Merlin's shirt as her hands shook. The word was foreign to her but so was everything here. She'd spent so long staring at the letters on the box that had sent out her plea for help that she hadn't been able to fully process everything.

It was almost too much.

"Don't worry. I'll explain everything...Probably very badly, but I'll try." Merlin didn't mind, he gave her hand a comforting squeeze as he opened the door to the taxi, sliding in first to show her it was fine. He knew this place was intimidating at first, but once you got used to it -- He could wait to show her around.

"This place is called Kansas. It's years and years in the future. These are cars, the yellow ones will take you places if you pay the people who drive them. Normally I just walk, but they're faster. The apartment is the place we stay. It's a huge building with a bunch of little homes in it." Merlin explained it badly like he'd promised, sitting close to her after telling the taxi where to go.

"It's a lot, but it'll be okay. Morgana is going to help you get some clothes, and I'll -- I'll take care of you."

Freya felt a small smile curl her lips upward at Merlin's announcement and she hesitated before sliding into the yellow beast after him. It was a little like a cart, but the smell was strange as was the way it was sealed off like a jar. She watched the rolling scenery seeing more buildings than trees and very little dirt, despite all the roads. Everything was lit, both the outside and inside of buildings and she was hard pressed to turn from the window to focus on what Merlin was telling her.

She worried her lower lip and twisted on the seat her legs sliding out from beneath her as she caught the end of Merlin's brief explanation, none of which had made much sense.

But the blush that had come unbidden refused to be subdued when she finally worked up the nerve to say anything at all, "She wouldn't let me return her dress. How can I let her help me find more clothing?"

Merlin always took care of her, ever since they met, she didn't know how to properly thank him for the first time, let alone now.

"She's a friend, and wants to help. Morgana would be better at helping you find woman's clothes then me." He blushed a little at the thought. Dresses were one thing but he was sure she'd need more then that, and he had no business trying to help her find underclothes and the sort. He was thankful Morgana was friends with him again and helping with this, though he had the feeling she would have helped Freya regardless of their personal argument.

Merlin didn't want her to have to worry about anything. He felt like he'd failed her in Camelot, he didn't save her when he should have. Merlin had the chance to change that now, and he was going to do it right this time no matter what. When the taxi stopped he led the way in, still holding on to her hand. "This is the apartment where we stay. Arthur and I are in 809. It's on the top floor, so it's a lot of stairs. Morgana is on the third floor in 311 if you ever need her help."
