He kept his arm around her, squeezing at her shoulders a little. "I know that it sounds crazy, but it's true. If you were some normal girl...you'd be a weight on me. A heavy one. I need to be with someone who understands me. Someone who understands the world that I live in and can protect herself from the things that I have to face on a daily basis. You can do that. You're strong, you're smart, and you're careful enough to know when something is too much for you. You back down when you have to, you're right there with me in a fight if I need you. I see nothing wrong with you being different. Come to think of it, you're probably the best person out there for me. And that's the truth, whether you wanna believe it or not."
As Ruby spoke on about how she dragged him down, about how he was better than she was, Sam closed his eyes and furrowed his brow in annoyance. He hated that. "I'm not superior to you in any way. You need to get that train of thought out of your head before it drives you completely insane." He didn't let her interrupt him. "You and me? We're equal. You're just as important in this relationship as I am. If you need something, you tell me. If you've got a problem, you tell me. I'm gonna look out for you, just like you're gonna look out for me. I told you before, Ruby - we're only gonna survive if we work together. The way you keep looking down on yourself? It's not gonna make this better. It's going to make us worse and I don't want to go down that path again. It was dark, it was stressful, and I just...I don't wanna do it again, Ruby. So promise me something. Promise me that you'll stop acting like I'm some kind of saint for taking you in. I know you screwed up. I know that we had that entire conflict where I shouldn't have taken you back because of who you were and what you did. I know. But that's over now. I'm moving forward. And I think you need to try moving with me." She had to hear it, straight from him. Sam wanted to make that point very clear with her. He was tired of seeing Ruby look down on herself. He reached over and slid a hand along the back of her neck, fingers pushing underneath the top portion of her shirt so that he could rub at the curve of her shoulder lightly. "Maybe you don't see it. Maybe you don't realize that it's unhealthy. But it is. And I want - I need for you to see that."
Sam looked down a little, thoughts drifting to Azazel. The stupid, sorry, son of a bitch. Knowing him, if he had discovered that he and Ruby had fallen in love? Azazel would have killed her. And that thought alone terrified him because Sam knew that old Yellow Eyes was more than capable of doing it. "You're failing him. But you know what? That's okay, Ruby. Because his goals weren't all that great. And they certainly weren't going to do you any good. Besides, by failing him you're succeeding with me. With us. With yourself. You may not realize it now, but this is better. You're gonna be okay." He kept his fingers at her shoulder, smoothing them over her skin in hopes of calming her down a little. Given all that they were discussing, he knew that she must have been at an extremely stressful place right now. She'd been sobbing and upset earlier and Sam wanted to do nothing but reassure her. Everything was going to be fine. It had to be.
"You are worthy of me," Sam repeated, pulling her close to him again, "more than. Just promise you'll take what I said into consideration, okay?" He leaned to the side, pressing his lips to the side of her cheek gently. "I love you. No matter what happens and no matter what crazy thoughts you get into your head in the future, never forget that."
