"What you did there has nothing to do with me and everything to do with those people you helped murder," Sam said sternly, "you did realize that, don't you? It's not what you did to me that makes me furious. It's what you did to them." He looked away briefly, doing his best to battle away the anger in his eyes. "You can't change the past, I know. But if there's anything else that you should tell me that you already haven't, you need to do it now. I don't want anymore surprises. It'll be easier for me to just deal with all of this if you put it out there now." No surprises meant that Sam knew everything. And, with Ruby, he felt that he did need to know everything.
"I assumed as much." Ruby had given her body away to Lilith. Sam had realized that a while ago. Back when Ruby had admitted to the truth. Sam figured that her time in Hell was probably not as terrible as she had painted it out to be either, but he wasn't going to voice that thought out loud. A lot of what he thought about Ruby had changed. She went from rebellious and different to something else all in the blink of an eye. He didn't know what that something else was quite yet, but Sam really was hoping that, eventually, they'd be able to figure it out together. At the mention of Azazel, Sam immediately slid his hand away from her knee. He couldn't help it. There was nothing about that name that made Sam feel sympathetic. And to think that she hated Dean because Dean had killed the son of a bitch who had destroyed his whole family...he clasped his fingers together once more and looked down, doing everything that he could to fight away that angry flare within him once again. It was hard to fight off when they got to talking about stuff like this. Sam had a difficult time keeping himself calm and open. He took some time to compose himself, not quite saying anything to Ruby right away. He had to think. Had to focus on the fact that he wasn't here to yell and argue with her.
"I made you a promise," Sam finally said, eyes on the wall ahead of him, "and I fully intend on keeping it. Your past is your past. There are gonna be times when I get like this and you're going to have to be patient with me when I do." Sam willed himself to look at Ruby, eyes warily meeting her own. "Can you do that?" He knew that this wasn't going to be the last time that he found something out about her past that tore him up inside. As many years as Ruby had tucked under her belt, Sam knew that he was never going to not have a moment in the future where something new and unpleasant came jumping out at him that made him want to shake Ruby out of frustration. It was mostly the big things, like what had happened at the police station, that he didn't want to be surprised about. The rest...he'd deal with the rest on his own as it came along. Somehow. "I know that you're trying, Ruby. I really, honestly, believe that. And I know it. Just like I know how horrible of a job I did at reacting to what you did for that kid the other day." He didn't reach out for her again, but the anger his eyes faltered a little. "I know that now really isn't the right time to say it - I should've said it then - but what you did was great. It was a big deal for you. I mean, you're a demon. And to think that a demon would've bothered..." He nodded, looking down at his hands. "You did real good. I'm proud of you."
