Pike had been out most of the day on a secret mission. He’d told Faith he had some errands to run, when in truth it was basically one errand. It was just important enough to him that he planned on taking however long he needed to get it done. He’d made sure to assure her his wound was fine, and that he was feeling very good, making mention of the fact that she’d been taking very good care of him.
He was glad she’d let him go, because if she’d asked he would have stayed. Yes, he was whipped. He wasn’t even trying to deny it, at this point. The truth was, he wasn’t blind. He knew this thing he and Faith had going wasn’t going to be without difficulties. But she could make him feel like a million bucks just with a simple smile. As far as he knew, she was the only one in the entire world – this one or their own – with that kind of power. It was worth whatever difficulties came up.
What had he spent all day doing? Shopping. Yes, he spent all day shopping, and it had nothing to do with bikes, cars, or action movies on DVD. He’d been shopping for a gift. Part of him suspected that Faith wasn’t too used to gifts that came without strings attached, and he wanted to give her one. He’d debated what to get her for a while. One thing that didn’t cross his mind was getting her a weapon. Oh, she liked weapons and so did he, but he wanted her to have something a bit more normal, something that didn’t have to do with pain or death. So the weapon stores were crossed right off his list of places to shop.
He ultimately decided on a little bit of a compromise.
With his phone, it was pretty easy to get himself a list of all the jewelry stores in town. Not in the area, but in the entire town. This was important to him, and he wanted to make sure he got the best the town had to offer. If that meant visiting every single jewelry store in Lawrence, well, that was what he’d do. It’s not like he was strapped for cash. He was easily the best bouncer at the club, and could pretty much demand however many hours he wanted. So right now, his wallet was looking pretty good.
This part of his mission is what took him the longest. He hadn’t quite visited EVERY jewelry store in Lawrence, but he’d been close. Luckily, he’d found one that called to him, and he’d purchased it right on the spot. Then he began Phase Two, compiling a list of churches in Lawrence. This one was a little less difficult, since one priest’s consecration was pretty much like every other’s.
So, after a day’s effort, he ended up with one shiny, gold, consecrated cross – he wondered if he should call it a crucifix, now that it was consecrated – that he intended to give to Faith. It had the practicality of being an excellent gift for a Slayer, what with the vampires and all, and at the same time looking very nice. And, more importantly, it came with no strings. It was hers, regardless of whatever else happened to either of them.
He had a bit of a spring in his step as he returned to the apartment, the small black velvet box containing the newly consecrated crucifix tucked securely in the right front pocket of his coat. He slipped in, smiled, and plopped on the bed. “Hey, Faith. You got a minute?” He didn’t sound worried or upset. In fact, he sounded excited, though he kept at least a little control on his tone. His right hand rested in his pocket, on top of the box.
