WHO: Sam & Ruby.
WHAT: Hunting demons.
WHEN: Early evening.
WHERE: Right outside of Lawrence.
RATING: TBD.

This wasn't awkward at all. Picking up the demon that had once been set to betray him and everyone else so that Lucifer could crawl out of Hell; the very same demon that Sam had to push himself away from because being close after all the secrets and lies did nothing but hurt. No, definitely not awkward. Not even a tiny bit. Sam grit his teeth, fingers wrapped tightly around the steering wheel of the car that he had hijacked to get to Ruby's place. He hadn't even bothered to suggest that they swap vehicles. She had a car that was in good shape to drive, but he didn't really want to talk. Didn't want to do much besides get this hunt done and get back to the apartments where he could hide at his place and sulk for a little while on his own. Odd behavior for the one who had invited her along to begin with, wasn't it? Well, it didn't help that he'd had second thoughts about it from that moment onward. As soon as Sam had suggested that Ruby come along with him, he found that he wanted to do nothing less than hit himself in the face for being so stupid. Asking her along was only going to complicate the hunt. Hunts were not meant to be more complicated than they already were. Now that he had this extra emotional baggage to worry about, Sam feared that he was going to screw it up somehow. That wasn't something that anyone in Lawrence could afford. Demons were serious business. The fact that they had been so subtly hidden just outside of the city all this time? Yeah, it showed just how serious the situation was. Like the band of them that he had tracked back to that business building a while back, they were probably positioned to wait for Lilith's orders on attacking them. They certainly couldn't attack them if Sam and Ruby got the jump on them first, now could they?

From what Sam had determined, there was no more than a good handful waiting for them. That could be handled well enough between them. He'd have been concerned if there were more - Dean would probably be coming along, in fact - but since there wasn't he decided to cut the hunt short between himself and Ruby. Himself originally. But now Ruby was here and...Sam glanced over at her from his side of the car quietly. He hadn't really said more than two words to her since he had ushered her into the car and taken off from her place. What could he say? Nothing. Really, nothing. Nothing that would be appropriate or would keep the calm air between them. Calm? Yeah, no. It wasn't calm. It was completely uncomfortable and the mere thought of how uncomfortable it truly was had Sam pulling at the collar of his jacket anxiously.

They were already halfway there. Maybe they didn't have to talk to each other; maybe they could take care of this hunt without saying a single word to one another.

...it was possible, wasn't it?

Ruby had quickly decided that she despised uncomfortable silences. She hadn't been used to them but in the time since she'd come clean to them all she and Sam had shared a lot of them. And coming from what they had been to what they were now. She hated it. More probably because of the flirting, it had been flirting and he had stopped them. And now they were here, driving to a hunt and he'd picked her up and driven this far without a single word. It stung Ruby deeper than she figured anything could but for a long time she didn't say anthing back, just letting him drive, letting him focus on whatever he needed to. She'd taken to staring out the window, watching cars and trees go by.

Until finally she snapped, not hugely or impressively with yelling or begging him to talk to her, it was just a very very simple question. "So what's the plan?" she asked. She figured now she'd started she might as well keep going. She got that there were demons outside the city, demons just lying in wait for something to happen, maybe for this attack. Maybe to get their hands on Sam, or her. Or Dean. Or one of the residents at the complex. It could be a lot of things and it needed to be looked into, but Sam could have done that alone. Or with Dean. Or anyone. But he'd asked her. He'd asked her. That had to mean something didn't it?. Did it?

She decided to try and explain her question a little better,"I mean, You don't need me. Not really, you're good enough on your own to take on a few demons so why did you ask me to come?"

Sam stifled a groan. He had been hoping to avoid conversation. He really had. Keeping his eyes glued to the road, Sam didn't bother answering her for a short while. He needed to think; needed to figure out what he was gonna say to her that wouldn't come off as desperate or stupid. Sam had already pinned some sort of false hope between them accidentally by responding to Ruby in a friendly sort of way before. Friendly? No, it went beyond friendly. They had been flirting and that was not something that Sam had ever imagined being able to do with her again prior to that occurrence. It was just...weird. And he had told her as such once he realized how out of place it all was. Now that he knew who Ruby really was, it made him question everything. Not just her, but himself. Everything that they'd ever had between them. He knew that he was in love. But what exactly was he in love with here?

"Go in. Act like we don't know anything. Attack from there, I figure." Sam tightened his fingers at the wheel a bit more. His knuckles were starting to turn white from the grip. "Dean's got a lot going on right now," he tried, shrugging. Eyes on the road. Just the road. Not Ruby. "They're having that thing...at the apartments. He'd want to spend time with Buffy. He needs that." It was better than him coming along and thinking of nothing but Hell. "I'm not sure on how many demons are gonna be there. Thought that having someone else come along would be a smart move."

That'd be his excuse, anyway.

It was a good plan, a solid plan, told to her through gritted teeth by a man struggling to be around her. Mixed messages weren't something Ruby was used to from the other side of them. To her it was simple, Sam had invited her along, had flirted with her, and now it scared him, how easily he was letting her into his heart again. If she'd ever left it. But what she hadn't been ready for is how awful it was being this close and not being able to reach for his hand, or smile over a shared joke, or any of the little small things that she'd quickly learned meant love.

"Right sure, a lot going on". She couldn't say she was happy Dean Winchester was doing well. She wasn't. It still bothered her that he got to be happy. But around Sam she'd never say it, she didn't need to, he wasn't stupid. "Him and Buffy. I sort of saw it coming. I think everyone did. Maybe it'll be good...for them". Truth was she sometimes wanted him to think of nothing but hell. It was a bitter reality for both her and Dean and they both deserved to remember the Pit, the Rack. All of it.

She returned to staring out the window as he drove them toward their targets location, last known one anyway. If not they had her, she'd locate them for him and she'd spot them, she could tell what they were just as they could her. And every demon walking the Earth knew who Sam was. His name was starting to be whispered among the rank and file as well as the higher ups. The Boy King come into his power. And she'd stopped before he'd pushed it too far, or sort of stopped.

"It's a sound plan. Listen do you need..."

She hated to ask it, because it changed him, little by little it made him more like her and she didn't ever want that for him. Not since she fell in love with the man he was. But all the same he was going on a hunt. And she wouldn't have him go in weak. "I just mean your abilities. I'm guessing its been a while since..."

Why was this awkward and why was finishing a damn sentance so hard for her around him.

"It will be." Sam was feeling somewhat confident of that. He usually didn't pay too much attention to the women that his brother indulged himself in. Buffy though? She was something else. He and Dean might not have discussed her often, but Sam could recognize that spark in his brother when he saw it. It was kind of hard to miss when all he'd seen of his brother since he'd climbed out of his grave was nothing. This hollowed, empty shell of the man that he had once been. Buffy was changing that. Maybe if they spent more time together...Sam couldn't get ahead of himself. He knew his brother. Sometimes relationships that bordered too closely to his heart got a little complicated. Sam was pretty sure that his brother didn't like getting too close. Sam was just gonna keep his fingers crossed for now. Hope for the best on his brothers behalf. It was all that he could really do without personally interfering and if he knew Dean the way he thought he did, then Dean wasn't going to want Sam to meddle in whatever it was that he had going on right now. "He...needs this. Someone like her. Maybe she'll get him to open up. Help him out in ways that I -" He almost smiled, somewhat sadly. Things had changed between him and his brother. Sam couldn't deny that. He just hated feeling so damn useless all the time. For all that power he had against those demons, he had nothing that he could do to make Dean feel whole again. "I hope it works out."

Sam drew in a slow breath. Yes, he did. He needed it very much, actually. The thing of it was that he had been far too hesitant to approach her about it. It had been a long while since he had last had any and he was feeling terribly off because of it. Tired. Clumsy. Weird. Sam could remember visiting Martha a few days ago. His hands had started shaking for no apparent reason at all while they had been discussing medical files. Sam was pretty sure that it linked back to the blood. It was like...a drug. It was a drug. Sam wanted to ask Ruby if it was supposed to be that way, but he never could bring himself to do it. Because if they admitted that it was a bad thing out loud, that meant that he'd have to quit. Or do something to slow it down. And Sam couldn't do that. There was just no way. He needed the demon blood. It was his link to getting Lilith; to saving the world, even. He had to be strong. Had to be in control. Because if he wasn't...bad things would happen. They always did. "Yeah," Sam finally answered, eyes turning to look at Ruby briefly, "yeah, I do. I've needed it for a while now. Didn't want to bother you about it though." More like he had been too stubborn to.

Help him out in ways Sam couldn't. Ruby didn't know where to look when he confided what he did. Was that her fault? Is that what he was saying, that he wasn't as close to Dean now because he'd trusted her, given her every chance and been stabbed in the back for it. Dean wanted her dead, she knew that. She understood it. But she'd thought her and Sam could work things out eventually and Dean and Buffy were...whatever, happy. Or they had the potential to be. She could see how Sam viewed it as a good thing, it was the logical opinion of the whole business. "I suppose she could help him, she seems like she's capable of it from what I know of her when she's not protecting her people from trusting me again"

It wasn't bitterness but simple matter of factness in her voice when she spoke, cause Buffy had every right. She focused instead on Sam's voice when he told her he needed more blood, that little hint of need he was trying to hide from her, that worry. He knew he was addicted, and so did she but she couldn't tell him no. She couldn't tell him it scared her sometimes. No, she just had to slice her arm open and let him take what he needed from her, and if nothing else it was contact. She'd missed it, missed him.

"If you're sure, you can have it when we get there, stop a little ways away and we'll do it there. Then we'll take out the demons and go home. Simple right?"

It was bad, what they were doing. Sam still wanted to kill Lilith and to be strong enough to do that he'd need more than she could give him, he'd have to take a life, in the full knowledge of what he was doing to the host he'd have to drain a person while they were still alive. Drain them Completely. And Ruby could never ask Sam to do that now. Not now she loved him so completely.

She looked over toward him again waryness in her gaze, she should have warned him, should have cut him off or not given him as much or something, they both knew it wasn't a good thing, what they were planning, she should have told him. Instead all she said was, "You shouldn't worry about bothering me"

Buffy had every right to keep those under her wing away from Ruby. If Sam had been in her position, he would have done exactly the same thing. Sam muttered something incoherent under his breath - something that was mostly about how Ruby would have been stupid to think that Buffy wouldn't protect hers from Ruby - before he reached out with an arm and began to fiddle with the radio. He needed to do something. Talking to her in itself, a conversation that was turning out to be quite simple, had turned into something else. It was hard. Sam felt like someone had shoved a fist through his chest, squeezing the life out of him with each and every passing second that he spent with Ruby at his side. He wasn't supposed to feel that way. It used to be so different. So...freeing. What had happened?

"I'm sure," Sam said, nodding. She had brought it up. Not him. No way that Sam was going to forget about that blood anytime soon now. He tried to keep himself from looking too eager about it. Shoulders squared, eyes on the road, hands steady. He could do this. No problem. It was just blood. Incredibly addicting blood. "Don't wanna walk in without being prepared. Best way to do that is..." He twisted the power button off, deciding that there was nothing on the radio worth tuning into. "Gotta be at my best." Sam wasn't his best if he didn't have the blood. That was just facts.

When Ruby spoke about him not worrying over bothering her, Sam pulled his eyes from the road long enough to look over and catch the cautious look on her face. He frowned, then forced his attention on driving once more. "Don't say that. I'm not gonna just show up at your door because I'm all strung out and -" And what? He had wanted to. Plenty of times before. But was that the way to recovery that he had wanted for either of them? Him showing up to use her before he vanished off to wherever once he was done? That wasn't making it better, was it? Not for them. Ruby deserved better than that. Even if the idea did seem to be terribly appealing. Sam wouldn't mind a fix...one that had no emotional attachments to it. It'd be good. Healthy. Satisfying.

She didn't miss the muttering, she just didn't react to it. How could she when she could almost see his point. And Buffy's. She was just another demon, right. Just another monster to fight. Only she was still here, here with Sam. Mixed message after mixed message. Dammit it used to be so simple with them, so easy. She never had to think of what to say around him and now...now she could hardly focus on any of it. She just had to get there, give him her blood and then help out however she could with the rest of the fight.

"You'll be at your best. I'll make sure of that"

The idea of him turning up at her door, demanding blood from her, she didn't know how to take it. She didn't even much know what she'd do in that instance. Was that better or worse than what they had now, would it make him care or would it be a false caring. That would probably be worse. Much worse. "Would it make us better if you did?" she asked, a lot of the thought processes of humans still lost on her. "It doesn't seem like it would, need and want are different."

Fucking blood, why had she ever...

Right.

She hated what it had done to him sometimes, what she had done. She'd caused this need in him and now she didn't know how to make it better. And she hated feeling so helpless to it, "Sam, maybe we...maybe the bl..." she trailed off, cursing herself for being unable to express her worries, unable to tell him that maybe they'd gone too far. That maybe he needed help. Maybe they both did. Because maybe then being with her would be like asking an alcoholic to walk around with a litre of vodka in his coat. Maybe he'd leave her for good.

She couldn't loose him more than she already had.

"How far now?" she asked, turning her head back to look out the window, anywhere but at Sam.

He didn't think that it would make it better. Maybe he'd be able to have an excuse for going to see her more often, but did he really need one if he wanted to? Shouldn't it have been his wanting to see Ruby that got him at her doorstep, not his need for the blood? Yeah, that was it. That was exactly how it was supposed to be. Yet most of the time lately, he got so bitter when he thought about her. The only way he could really get through thinking about Ruby without it leaving a bad taste in his mouth was thoughts of her blood. Warm, powerful, flowing deep in those veins waiting for him to drink it on down. Sam drew in another deep breath, the mere thought of the blood making him want to reel the car over onto the side of the road and take it from her right then and there. But he couldn't stop. Had to keep going. They were on a mission. And he didn't want to come off as desperate as he felt. Unfortunately, that was getting harder and harder by the second.

"Not too far. It's a couple more miles." He didn't say much more about their destination than that. Instead, he averted his gaze in Ruby's direction once more, looking somewhat concerned. That stiff, uncomfortable look he had been wearing before wavered slightly. "What? Maybe the blood what?" He didn't want her to drop the subject. No more lies; no more secrets. He wanted Ruby to be open and honest with him from here on out. She owed him that and he planned on telling her as such if she refused to finish her statement. "Tell me." Sam attempted to loosen his grip on the steering wheel a little, but it was pointless. His fingers kept wrapping around it tightly, almost as though he needed it to keep himself grounded.

She didn't want to tell him her worries, but that look in his eyes, that wish for honesty. She knew that he wanted that between them if nothing else and dammit she couldn't lie to him. She'd done enough of that for several lifetimes and now it had to stop. Sam needed that from her and she needed to give him what he wanted now, she wanted to.

So honesty it was.

"We should be more careful is all, take only what you need, no more. It'll be hard. I know that. I know how hard but maybe we need to watch ourselves with that...as well as...y'know, the rest"

She looked away before she apologised again, for everything, every single thing she'd done to him. There was only so many times he'd hear it before he decided he'd heard it too much. And she didn't like him to see her sad, she wasn't trying to make him feel guilty, she wasn't doing anything more to hurt him.

"We'll be okay...or we'll figure this out at least, for now lets just take it easy and do this hunt. We can talk more after we're done. We focus on this and it'll all be good. We can figure it out after this. Won't we?" She wasn't sure she wanted him to answer and she still hadn't turned her head. She couldn't look at him until he spoke again, mostly cause she didn't know what he'd say like she used to.

Sam slowed the car down a little, using the reduced speed to his advantage so that he was able to turn and look at Ruby in confusion. She wanted them to be careful with the blood? Wasn't that what they were already doing? Being secretive about it? Hiding it from everyone? How else could they be careful about it? Take only what you need. Sam bit down onto his lip, then shook his head. A flash of annoyance bolted through him so fast that Sam had no idea that it had been coming to begin with. "Take what I need? And how do you know how much I need, Ruby?" He was trying to keep an even voice. It was hard to do when he felt like he was a dog and Ruby was trying to take away his favorite treat. How dare she. Through gritted teeth, he added, "I'm fine. The blood is fine. We're being careful. I don't see what you're worried about." Except he did. But he didn't want to admit it. Ruby wasn't allowed to lie to him anymore. No one ever said that he wasn't allowed to himself.

"I don't know." He didn't know if they'd be able to figure anything out. Things were so messed up between them lately that Sam just didn't know what to think of them anymore.

He tried to keep himself from snapping. It was a hard thing to do when all he wanted to do was drink her blood. Something to make all of these feelings go away. Awkward, bitter, hurting. The blood would help with that. It always helped. Sam pulled the car onto a different road and drove onward, approaching a series of streets that divided into a neighborhood. After he drove the car through a few of the smaller streets, Sam pulled the car onto the side of the road and cut the engine off entirely. "It's not far from here." He turned to look at her once more, this time far more directly. "I think we should have this talk now."

She should never have said it. Immediatly she looked down almost as if chastised, so used to it when Azazel would be dissapointed in her for a mistake she'd made. He'd look at her, just a look and she'd want to curl up and hide. No. No she had not just compared them and she wouldn't again. He was different, he was so different and she'd hurt him with her talk of stopping, or cutting down. She wouldn't say it again. "I'm sorry, you're right. You know what you're doing." she said softly, knowing he didn't, knowing she was giving him what he wanted and knowing she was wrong but oh so unable to stop herself for fear of him slipping further away from her than he already had. "We're being careful and I'm just jumping to conclusions I..."

She trailed off as he pulled the car off the main road, into a normal looking neighbourhood, houses and trees, very suburbia. They didn't fit here. Not even a little bit. And he wanted to talk. He wanted them to have the talk here. Like this. She was scared to.

"How do we start at least? I mean what can I say that I haven't already. I'm here with you, I came because you asked it of me and because those demons are a danger. I want to make it up to you so badly Sam but I don't know how, and I don't know how to be around you when I'm not yours...I still feel like I am. I just..."

It was hard for her, expressing true feelings, it had been easier when those feelings were the beginnings of their love. She'd known exactly what to say. She'd been able to look at him and the words would just flow. So easily. This...she hated this.

"I never stopped loving you. But I think you know that...and I want..." She looked across at the man she loved wondering how to put this, she wasn't demanding, her tone said as much. She'd never demand off him again. But she needed this from him. "You said you'd see if you could find me. The demon. I want to know if I feel the same to you. But only if you're ready. Its all up to you. Its how it should be from now on"

Sam could tell that Ruby wanted to say more. But she was agreeing with him now. That was exactly how it was supposed to be when it came to the blood. She'd offer it, he'd drink it. They could ignore the giant elephant in the room - the one preaching on and on about how terrible all of this actually was. Sam rubbed at the back of his neck, making a mental note to just directly ask for the blood from now on rather than open up a doorway to actual discussion about it. They didn't need to discuss it. Nothing good could possibly come out of the two of them being open and honest about their feelings on the blood and what it had turned Sam into. What it had turned both of them into. So even though he knew that Ruby wanted to say more, Sam didn't ask her to. If only to keep that corner of the conversation from continuing onward and getting all complicated. They already had enough complicated to deal with as it was.

"And if you don't feel the same?" Sam folded his arms across his chest, staring out the window past her shoulder moodily. "What then? What will happen if that image I have -" That perfect image. The one that he had happily carried around on top of Ruby's name for quite some time now. "- what if it breaks? What if it changes things? Aren't you the least bit worried about that?" God knew that Sam was. He was trying here. He really was. Losing that little bit of something that he had left (or at least a part of it) because of this was not something that he wanted to do. He needed it. The will to keep being around her; something logical that just wasn't his feelings that made him want to be around her. Facts. Actual reason for him to believe that Ruby was different enough to change. He needed that. He had to have it.

"Do you really think it'll be the same?" He looked her over warily, not feeling too certain of the fact himself.

She'd leave it, not talk about the blood again. It hurt him when she did, worried him, so instead she'd just give in, give him what he wanted. Needed. Of course it was needed. Not that she liked to think about that, the problem of course was what she had done. What she had caused in him. She loved him and she'd done this to him? She’d gotten him hooked on her, addicted, and he didn’t want the blood to be taken away. He couldn’t be without and she was aiding him in the addiction. Helping him even. It wasn’t right and she knew it. She suspected he knew it too. She really was awful. Evil. Who would do this to a man they purported to love?. She knew it was her need for him that stopped her confronting him over the blood properly. Stopped him cutting her off completely like she wanted. To make sure he could never become what he’d been supposed to. And she couldn’t. She wouldn’t tell him no. He’d get what he wanted from her for as long as he wanted it because she hated to say no to him. Maybe if he looked into the core of her again, maybe there wouldn't be anything worth saving.

And he was asking her now if she was scared of him doing it.

"You want the truth, I'm terrified. So scared that it won't be the same. Every time I think about it I'm so scared that when you do look at me you'll see a monster just another demon like all the others. I’m terrified it’ll make you hate me. But I also know that not knowing, Its so much worse and hurts so much more. I'd rather know. If that makes any kind of sense at all. I'd rather know." She closed her eyes for a moment, scared for him to start but needing him to. Her voice was small and vulnerable when she spoke again arms folded in imitation of his but more protecting herself than defensive.

"I don't know if it's gonna be the same. I don't know what you'll sense or what you'll feel and on so many levels I don't want you to do it. But we have to. We need to. Or we'll never work this out. You do want to, don’t you? You want us to start to come back from this?" She needed to know he did. Maybe not right away. Maybe not for years. But she didn’t want to loose the hope that they could fix this somehow. She didn’t know what she’d be without that hope. She’d be lost. So very lost.

She was being perfectly logical. Sam wanted to come back from this as much as she did. Why anyone would want to live like this - with these feelings that they had to endure because of their distance from one another - for longer than they had to was beyond him. "I don't want it to be like this forever," he admitted. She had to know that though. She was probably feeling exactly the same way. "But I don't want it to get worse from here either." She was right though. If he didn't do something soon, they'd never figure it out. "Look, Ruby..." Sam leaned back in his seat, bringing his hands up to cover at his face. Sam rubbed at his eyes wearily, then dropped his hands back down at his sides and bit down onto his lip with a frown.

"Okay. We can...we can do it. I mean...I can. But I don't know if I've got enough..." He pushed his gaze out his window. Then, rather abruptly, Sam pushed his door open and climbed out of the car. He slammed the door shut behind himself, then moved around to Ruby's side. Sam pulled the door open for her, then took a step back so that Ruby could exit the vehicle as well. "We should walk. If we're gonna do this. And I'm gonna need to have it before we do. I don't know if I'm strong enough to manage right now." There was a small set of woods between some of the houses ahead. They could go in there. Sit down beside some of the trees. Take a break and figure this out before they dealt with those demons. Sam knew that fighting them would make him feel better. But knowing this...the truth? It would beat that triumphant feeling he got out of the fight easily.

"I'll give you what you need" she said simply in response to it all, hiding all the conflicting emotions between a veneer of calm, and climbing out of the car to join him. He wanted to walk, go somewhere private. Woods, Trees. Now that brought back memories, she thought as she walked alongside him toward the woodland. Good memories she thought her eyes flicking to a low hanging tree branch remembering joking and laughter and then seduction, his and hers she said as she finally looked back at Sam. It was probably ironic that they'd wound up somewhere like this. What was the plan? Sit, wait to know one way or the other. Either way she was so very grateful that he was willing to try."

They got into the woodland and she stood, just watching him, knife in her boot, knowing what he'd need to do with it to get what he needed, needed and wanted and hoping she could keep him focused throughout it. Hoping he'd be calm and rational and that he'd see her. The demon. And he'd know just how much she loved him.

"Do you want to sit down? How should we do this? Should I sit close to you or..."

She hated the awkwardness, hated asking questions of him every five seconds. But ulitmatly of course the decision was his.

Sam led the way into the woods silently. He was being half cautious with every step that he took, somewhat concerned that maybe the demons had spread themselves out even further than expected. That was mostly paranoia hounding at him. Something told him that if there were demons hanging around, the last place they'd choose to spend their time was rolling around in the dirt surrounded by trees. Not when there were homes with plenty of innocents to screw around with nearby. No, they wouldn't be in the woods. The only demon he'd find in there was Ruby and she wasn't exactly someone that he considered a threat. Painful to be around, sure. Someone that was looking to finish him off? No. Not anymore, anyway. Sam kept moving silently, flinching only slightly when a twig snapped beneath his foot. He wouldn't have been so bothered by it under normal circumstances. Yet with him feeling so terribly off because of his blood deprivation, the little things were more likely to get to him than before. Go figure.

"Here." He finally said, turning to face Ruby. It was dark. Almost impossible for a guy like him to see. There were the shadows of the trees surrounding them and Ruby's face somewhat noted in the dark, but that was it. He felt out a tree with a hand and slowly slid down to sit at it's base. Back pressed to the bark, Sam motioned for Ruby to join him. "Sitting is fine. Probably for the best. We'll..." How did they do this? What did she mean by that? Looking genuinely puzzled, Sam squinted up at Ruby as he waited for her to join him. They had done this plenty of times before. She sliced herself open, he drank. What was the proble - oh. Oh.

"...we don't exactly have anything to put it in," he said, somewhat lamely, "I guess I'm just gonna have to..." And for this, while he found the idea to be incredibly awkward, he also didn't mind. It got him the blood. He could risk touching Ruby for this. Making contact and all. That was okay.

Yeah, Oh. Ruby slid down to join him at the base of the tree still just thrown with all the memories of them together in places like this, dark and woodland. It suited them in some ways, she'd always been a fan of nature but this, here. Her and him, and what he was going to do. She just needed to get on with it, not think about it and discover one way or the other if she felt different to him and if that meant he didn't love her anymore. They had to get this out of their systems before going on the hunt or she knew they'd be distracted and that would be bad, just sitting here, just for a few minutes or as long as it took Sam to drink, to recover, and to get in her head like he was.

Once comfortable Ruby took the knife from her boot, she'd never felt this awkward about the blood before, but she was worried about its effects not to mention he would have to touch her, his lips would be on her arm and the feel of it, of him...

In many ways she thought it was unfair. But she knew what this was. How needed it all was. Without thinking further about it Ruby sliced into her arm, trailing the usual path she did when he drank from there. "Take what you need" she said, raising her arm to him and looking away before she felt him drink.

He didn't need to see her face in order to pick up how off she sounded when she told him to go on and take what he needed. Ruby didn't want to do this. She didn't want to give him anymore blood. Sam hesitated just then. It was something that he had not done in a very long time, hesitating around the blood and all. Usually it was instinctive. See the blood, drink the blood. Repeat as needed. Yet the feeling of uncertainty that flooded through him when Ruby spoke? It was unexpected. And new. So very new. She was usually so comforting and sure of herself when she spilled her blood. Now it was different and Sam found that he didn't like it one bit. His brow creased in the dark as he stared at her. He half considered asking her what the deal was, but his stomach began to twist anxiously. The blood. Spilling down her wrist. He couldn't really see it in the dark, but Sam was almost sure that he could smell it.

So he wrapped his fingers around her arm and pressed his mouth to her wrist. Almost instantly, those thoughts and feelings went away. Nothing could be thought on; nothing but the blood. He clung to her arm desperately, eager to drain up as much of it as he could without harming Ruby in the process. Eyes squeezed shut, he did nothing but drink. It was something worth savoring. Sam had been craving the taste of her for quite some time now. Getting what he wanted? It was officially the best feeling in the entire world. Letting the rush take over was almost as refreshing; Sam didn't quite drop her arm when he was finished drinking. He kept a grip on her wrist, head falling back and looking to the sky as he adjusted to the wonderful warmth flooding through him. All Ruby. Demon blood. The best thing he'd ever tasted in his life.

Seeing the stars peeking through the trees, Sam sort of found himself smiling. He felt like maybe, if he wanted to, he could fly. "Better," he said, looking back down with that same strange smile on his face. "That's much better."

Sam hesitated, just for a little while. There was a pause, hesitation, and Ruby didn't know what to do with it, she knew she should whisper that it was okay, that she'd be here, that he'd be fine, all those things were true in theory. And she really would be here. But all the same. She focused on her breathing as he drank from her, still looking away, still just letting him do what he had to do and not thinking about the feel of his mouth on her skin again. She couldn't think of things like that. She just couldn't. It wasn't her place to think those things anymore.

And when he was done, he kept holding her wrist as he let his head fall back, just a simple thing, his hand still gripped at her arm and she was compelled to turn back toward him, watching him ride out the strange high it brought him. She was ready for the feel of that power whenever he felt he was balanced enough, she was even able to deal with his hand wrapped ar her wrist, all of it. She could deal with all of it if he found she was still different to the other demons. Still better. She looked down at him, blood stained and smiling and she knew she should be content that she was here with him. But she worried, about the cause of all this. About the blood, about what he'd fine.

"Good" she fianlly said, when he informed her things were better, Fuck, she just wanted to reach out and touch him, just for a second see where he went on those highs, see what caused that particular smile that she never could. But she didn't reach out. That was for him to do tonight.

He had almost forgotten that they were supposed to be at odds with one another. It was easy to forget when all he wanted for her to do was pick up on their old routine. Ruby would stay close to him, whisper soft words into his ear that made everything feel so calm and right. Even though he was downright thrilled that he had gotten his fix, Sam felt like something was completely missing. Was that it? Was it her comfort that he needed for things to be absolutely perfect? He refused to think on it now. Not right now. He had his blood. He was strong again. Sam had nothing to worry about, now did he?

Except for her. Ruby. And what they had agreed to attempt before they went chasing those demons down. Even though that confident look had taken over his former expression of anxiety, Sam felt something inside of him turn unpleasantly. He had to read her; had to feel her. Find the demon within and figure out if she was just another empty, soulless thing. She couldn't be, could she? He'd had so much faith in Ruby being different than all of the others. If she wasn't anymore, then how would he look at her after tonight? Would he still even love her? A part of him immediately protested. Of course he would. He did now, didn't he? This would change nothing.

Or maybe it would change everything.

"Sit still." Sam didn't say much more than that. It was all the warning Ruby got before he drew in a breath and began to focus. He was still reeling from the fresh taste of her blood in his mouth. Being able to feel Ruby up close and personal, right on the inside, only doubled the thrill of what he felt. At least it usually did before things had gotten bad. Frowning, Sam slid the hand that had been at her wrist onto her shoulder. Then he pushed through, breaking past the surface of the body he was sitting in front of and wrapped around the black thing that lay deep within. Found you, he thought to himself. It didn't take very long before Sam drew in a sharp breath.

"This isn't right...this isn't..." He didn't let go. Why would he? Why would he now? "You..." She wasn't cold. She was supposed to be cold. All demons were. This was...different. And the same. All at once.

No, no no no no.

He'd raised his hand to her shoulder, and she'd felt him, felt him get to the very core of her as only he could, and she'd done her best, she'd thought about nothing but her love for him, that ache in her heart when she remembered he wasn't hers to want, not since she'd done what she had, she'd wrapped herself around that powerful presence inside and prayed to...whatever would listen that Sam would see that she was different. But he was saying it wasn't right, he was saying it wasn't right and she was the same. That was it wasn't it? Just another demon.

She very nearly collappsed into his arms, manageing to stay upright however meant she couldn't hide the sobbing any longer, tears fell from her eyes, right there on the grass closer to Sam than she'd been in so long but all the same further away. But he hadn't pulled away yet, Why had he not pulled away. "I'm sorry..." she muttered, "I'm so sorry I tried to be what you needed, tried to be better...I wanted to be better I...How does it change...do I just feel.."

She didn't even know if she was making any sense, all she knew was he'd said it wasn't right and her world had shattered around her.

It wasn't right. Not at all. Sam barely moved when Ruby fell forward and collapsed into his chest. He just kept up that hold on her, mind focusing on every last bit of the demon inside that he could get a hold of. Even through the high, he could feel her. Everything about her that made his heart pound so fully whenever his mind strayed to thoughts of Ruby and nothing but Ruby. He could barely focus, it was all so overwhelming. Just there. All there. And now she, the demon, was changing. All in the body, all riled with emotion. Because of him. What he'd said to her. Sam didn't let go. He was kind of afraid to now that he had a good hold of her. And that feeling...the way the demon inside had gone from a strong presence to something that suddenly recoiled away from his touch because of the words that he'd just spoken. He had never felt Ruby like this before. Not when he had a hold of her.

He should have just flat out told her what he'd really found. Then Ruby could pull herself back together and they could get back to their hunt. Instead, Sam found something inside of him aching with the flood of emotion that he felt radiating from Ruby. She was crying. He didn't like it when she cried. Demons weren't meant to shed tears, not really. Especially not demons like her. Out to end the world. Looking to free Lucifer, thus partaking in the greatest evil of all. All of that sin; those actions that were nothing but heartless and cruel - and here she was. Reacting in such a way that Sam couldn't possibly comprehend how a person like her could ever attempt something like that to begin with.

"Don't...don't do that." Sam couldn't help himself. He had restrained them both for so long that Sam couldn't bear to distance himself. Not right now. Not when she was like this. He put his arms around her and pulled her to his chest. At the same time, Sam still gripped at her mentally. He had just taken her blood in, so it was easier. He wasn't tiring at all. Rather than holding at the demon with that probing curiosity, Sam tried being more gentle with her. He wanted to feel Ruby again. Not like this; not when she was upset and broken. "Don't say sorry. You're different now. But it's not 'cause you're like them. You're..." He hated himself for being so weak. But how could he sit here and do nothing? Sam reached down, fingers smoothing across her cheek. He carefully tipped her head upward so that she was looking at him. "You've changed. More. It's like...you're warmer than before. Better. I didn't think you could get better, but you are." He didn't understand why either.

She really had shied away from his touch when he'd said what he had, pushed back as far as she could go from him just hurting with the thought that she felt to him now like just another demon. And she knew she wasn't because falling in love with a human so completely and utterly. Even a human like Sam? It was all so unheard of. Through the sobs she knew he hadn't pulled away. Was he proving it to himself? Staying there s he could feel the disgusting cold thing that he hated, was he going to hurt her?

...No, no he wouldn't do that even if it was true about what she was. He wouldn't. What he did instead though was just as, if not more suprising. He held her close to him, wrapping strong arms around her, he held her body and he held the demon and it was gentle. And he told her she was better. Better and warmer. Tentitively she let herself curl back into his grip, let the feel of black smoke curl around the invisible presence that he'd become inside everything she was, Oh she was still hesitant, still confused and yet mostly still just thrilled at being back into his arms again. Sam was holding her, telling her she was warmer than before and she didn't quite know how to react.

"It's better?" she finally said, as much disbelief in her voice as there had been in his, she was still crying but it was mostly now from shock, from the effort of having cried so much, from feeling like she could barely stand with the pain it brought her. But now Sam was holding her, demon and body both, he was telling her she'd changed, running his fingers along her cheek and making her look at him, tear stains were decidedly unflattering, she thought in a moments amusement. "What does it mean, that its better? What do we do with this?". Her face turned to his, almost leaning herself into his touch needing it, craving it as much as he had craved her blood.

The next wild thought she had was that without the blood they couldn't have had this, he couldn't have looked in her heart like that. He didn't need the blood, there would be a time when he'd break free of the dependance so maybe...maybe they could keep going with it, for moments like this. Wrong and addictive as it was how could it be wrong when it make her feel like this. His touch, the heat of what they shared.

Dammit she wanted him to kiss her?. Wild thought number three

He felt her warming up to him again. It was cautious, but she wasn't hiding away from him as she had been before. Sam tried to will himself to make his presence within her a comforting one. Before he wouldn't have been as inclined to do so, but he couldn't exactly keep himself from doing so now. Ruby needed to know that he wasn't going to turn his back on her. They'd gotten this far, through the betrayal and hurt, they weren't going to stop now. Not after what Sam had realized just now. She was different. And it was because she chose to be, wasn't it? "I'm not sure..." He tightened his arms around her and leaned back against the tree, not quite willing to let up his hold on Ruby just yet. "You were hiding things from me before. Maybe this is because I can see all of you now. 'Cause you're letting me."

They probably shouldn't have been as close as they were. All the same, Sam couldn't let her go. He had to make sure that she was all right. And, selfishly, he kind of liked having an excuse to be as close with her now as he was. He had missed the feel of her in his arms. And the way that she felt on the inside? It made his heart beat faster than it had in a very long time. "Not sure on what we're 'sposed to do with this. It's..." He frowned, eyes on nothing else but her. His vision had adjusted to the dark a bit, but he couldn't see her as well as he'd have preferred. "I don't know," he said, expressing his uncertainty once more. "I just know that I'm glad. That you're...this. This is good."

He didn't think that it could get any better for right now, actually. This had all given him hope. Sam was actually beginning to believe that maybe things could get better between them. Ruby had changed. She was changing.

She let herself lean back with him, his arms tight and comforting around her and her own heart practicly rising in her chest. Ruby let herself relax as much as she could in his grasp and tried to focus herself on what he was saying. The way he was with her. It was still conflicted, she knew that, she wasn't stupid. They still had a ways to go. But this had to be a start, a good thing. "Sam, you heard what Lorne said, you felt me just now, and I'll do whatever other tests you have to prove myself to you. You know that. I've lied to you so much and I see what it does, I see what it cost and that night I told you I swore to myself to never have a secret from you again. Not ever. But I get it, I know you might not believe that but I don't know how else to tell you."

But he didn't know what he wanted, what he needed from her, maybe he didn't either. For now lying in his arms like this would have to be enough. "It's complicated Sam, and I know what I did. I know how much I hurt you. But this...being like this again. It feels right doesn't it?". She curled into him just a little, not seducing, not pushing, just craving the closeness. "We can just...sit here a little while before we go hunt, Just digest this a little bit, can't we?"

She never wanted to stand up, to go back to the awkwardness and tension. She knew this had done good, she knew it had helped a good deal. But all the same getting up would take that warm feeling away from her. "This was good wasn't it? This was worth it. You're happy?"

Sam wanted to do nothing more than sit out here with her all night so that he could hold her in his arms and reassure her that they were gonna make it. Everything was going to be fine. But he knew better than that. Sam had been taught better than that. There were demons out there, possibly attacking innocents and he couldn't just sit around when he knew where they were. Cursing himself for being a hunter (for perhaps the millionth time), Sam shook his head in disagreement. "No, we can't. We've gotta go." He dragged his thumb across her cheek, rubbing at the soft skin as he stared down at the dark figure before him. "But this, what we did here, it was a good thing. And I believe you. I swear, I believe you."

That didn't make what had happened go away. But it did make him feel a little better on the inside. There was still that aching pain that came up every time he thought about her. At the same time, he could still feel that warmth. The demon that she was. And he knew, somehow, that this was right. The two of them being together. Like it was somehow supposed to be that way.

Quietly, Sam leaned forward and pressed his mouth to her cheek. Just a small reminder that them being together wasn't a chore or a job. He was still clinging onto Ruby because he loved her with all his heart. It was the only reason any hunter would ever bother hanging around a demon for but so long. Sam released her, both mentally and physically, and began to stand. He reached a hand out into the dark and offered it to her, smiling faintly, even though he wasn't quite sure that she'd be able to see it. "Let's go."

She knew they had to go, much as she cursed the fact. They had to go and hunt and Ruby had to help him kill her own kind. Or what had been her own kind once. Now she was different. Now she was what she had pretended for so long to be, and she was that way because Sam had told her so. Because Sam had looked in to the heart of the demon and found warmth. Found love there. And if she was capable of that then she was capable of anything. She took the last few moments to compose herself and register that he did in fact believe and understand she wasn't lying. Maybe trust would come next. After a while. She knew how badly she'd screwed up.

He kissed her, on the cheek before standing up and Ruby could only smile sweetly in response, not exactly the reaction she'd planned, but still it was a kiss, and she grabbed at the offered hand quicker than most would have, intending full well not to let it go unless she had to.

"We have to do this. I know. But we will do this. You and me, together, those demons don't stand a chance. In fact, What's say you and me just go be awesome? Just you and me? We'll get this done" The detour to here had been a good thing, it had brought them closer than possibly ever before and though she missed his touch at her core, though the feel of the kiss he'd given her still lingered she knew it had been the right call. Things were brighter than they'd been in a long while

And she still wasn't letting go of his hand.

Once she took his hand, Sam pulled Ruby up onto her feet. As soon as he did so, Sam found himself looking up at the sky again. He still felt like maybe he'd be able to fly if he really wanted to. Though this time the thought didn't come from the high he was getting out of the blood; it was being created out of the emotion he was getting from what he had just experienced. Ruby was good. Not completely good. Not like an angel or anything. But there was good inside of her and it was something that had not been there as strongly as it had once been before. Sam had not been delusional before. What he felt was real and he was going to remember that from here on out. Maybe it'd make things easier. He sure hoped so.

"Be awesome? That's how you want to describe our demon hunting?" He looked down, taking note of the fact that she was still holding his hand. Sam considered pulling away, for the sake of keeping them both from getting in too over their heads too soon. But it was dark here. And they were alone. He could keep it up for a little while, couldn't he? Sam gave her fingers a gentle squeeze before he began to move forward, leading them back to the neighborhood just outside of the woods they'd been hiding in before. He suddenly felt like some of that weight on his shoulders had shifted aside. All because of what had happened. Ruby had been right - seeing what was inside of her had been a good plan. He didn't regret one second of it.

"There's at least a handful of demons there, so we need to be ready," he warned, looking ahead to where the car was parked. "Are you?" He looked over at Ruby, brows rising. "Ready, that is?"

The little squeeze on her hand was enough to make Ruby believe the entire experiance worth it. He still loved her, he wanted to make this work, he wanted it to be okay, and with time, with work. It would be. Everything would work out because Sam loved her. Hand still locked with his, she followed him toward the car, walking alongside him and almost radiating happiness, calm, contentment. And yes, she'd meant awesome.

"That's how I want to describe it. We make a good team you and me. So I say we're gonna be awesome. You really want to argue the point?" she added just a hint of light teasing in her tone. As for weather she was ready?

"I'm completely ready. It's all going to be fine Sam. You know you're able to do this and I'll be right there to help. We've got this". Maybe it was arrogant, maybe it was too much so. But it was her, and it was Sam, and she knew there was no demon in hell or on Earth that could shatter them now. They'd come through so much, adn Ruby was never loosing him again. It was entirely possible she was already over her head too soon, but she truly felt when it came to Sam, there was no such thing.

Sam didn't quite smile, but there was a warm glint in his eyes that he couldn't hide. "I could completely argue the point, but I'm beginning to think that I shouldn't. If only for the sake of my sanity." Sam stepped over a tree branch, breaking free from the woods entirely before his feet began to hit pavement. He paused just behind the car, gripping at Ruby's hand carefully as he considered something for a long moment. Even after everything that had happened between them, Sam knew that they could both count on one thing: being capable in a fight. They had worked alongside each other for quite some time now and they each knew how the other worked. Sam was still advancing a little and Ruby sometimes chose to add her own flair of creativity to a battle, but most of the time Sam knew what to do when he was with her. She made it all so much easier than he had remembered it being a few years ago. Back when demons were new and far more intimidating than they were now. At least the lower demons were. There were still quite a few higher ups, kind of like Alastair had, who managed to creep him out.

"Here." Sam reached into his pocket and pulled out the knife that he'd sort of been hanging onto. Not the knife that they used for the blood, but the one that Ruby was going to need in order to take down some of those demons they were to face. "You'll need this." He let go of her hand, extending the knife toward her, handle up, as he did so. It was a gesture of trust. Giving her back the deadly knife wasn't exactly something he thought that Dean would be pleased with, but Sam knew that it was the right thing to do. Ruby had proven herself to him tonight. She deserved a little reassurance of her own. "And you can keep it after. Might need it later." Once the knife was out of his hands, Sam reluctantly turned and made for the drivers side.

She laughed at that, it was genuine and warm and damn she'd missed the feeling. "Its usually easiest not to argue when I'm being entirely right about something. Saves your sanity, like you said". They were nearing the car and Ruby knew soon she'd have to let go of that grip on her hand. She didn't want to even for a second but practicalities and all. Driving. But she had to admit to a hint of suprise when Sam stopped them just behind the car and took out a knife. Her knife. She didn't feel in danger, not for a second, and she didn't need to. He was giving it back to her, returning it after all the time she'd spent without it over what she'd done. He was trusting her enough to take it back and she didn't know what words would be appropriate.

"Thank you" she said finally taking the knife from him, the words she'd used sounding inadequate even in her hea and even more so when spoken aloud. She could do better than that. "I won't let you down again. Not ever. I promise okay?. The fact that we're even here...like this...Its more than I ever expected or deserved so....Thank you Sam."

She climbed into the car at the passanger side still just holding the knife. It was hers, she'd earned calling it that, twice over now, but this time she really felt like she deserved to hold it, to wield it. And for the first time, worthy of the trust that went along with it.

"There's no point in arguing with someone that's too stubborn to admit that they're wrong." He was fueling the banter, which was something that he probably should have avoided doing. But compared to the awkward feeling that they had shared earlier, Sam found this to be much more preferable. It was warmer and it made him feel a bit less uncomfortable. Sure, he was still anxious and wary, but it was less so than before. And at this point? He'd take anything that he could get. "So, basically, I'm avoiding arguing with a brick wall. It's pretty smart of me to do, actually."

He turned the car on and, as soon as Ruby was inside, Sam started to drive again. He had the addresses down by memory, so kept his eyes completely focused on the road and the street signs as he drove. Sam didn't comment on her thanks. In all honesty, he really didn't know what to say. Was he supposed to tell her that she was welcome when he was just as grateful that they were able to work on this? He had never wanted to see Ruby dead or in Hell. Sam would also have been a terrible liar if he'd ever said that he'd prefer that Ruby stay away from him entirely. Selfish that may be, but it was the truth. It physically pained him to be away from her and Sam was more than appreciative that she was still here with him today.

"All right." Sam straightened up in his seat, deciding not to think too much about Ruby dying or going to Hell. It wasn't a subject he liked to think about, let alone acknowledge existing as a possibility to begin with. Not that, in his head, it was a possibility. No, Sam would kill anyone that tried to condemn Ruby to either of those fates first. She'd be fine. "Location up ahead." He nodded to a particularly large house. It looked to be about two stories, but it amounted to almost double the size of some of the other homes that they had passed. He pulled the car to the side of the road once more, keeping a fair distance between that house and their current location. He didn't want them to see them coming. "We'll be going in through the back. It's inevitable that they'll figure out that we're there, but I want to try being stealthy up until they do. I don't know how many we're up against and I don't want to deal with any surprises." At least not any surprises that he wasn't equipped to handle. Sam got a kick out of using his abilities on the demons that he fought. But he really wasn't a fan of losing.

She loved the banter, she'd missed it horribly and here she had it back. She was starting to believe life could be better again and it felt good. "You are, entirely. Brick wall. So you really shouldn't try. You'll tire yourself out" she said, as he pulled the car away from the side of the road and drove them toward their destination. He was silent on the drive over and she supposed that was focus. Getting ready for what they had to do perhaps. It could be any of a number of things. Either way she left him to it. He knew she was grateful. He knew she wanted to make this work again same as him. And he knew she was 100% behind him when it came to this.

They came to a stop at the house and Ruby figured the set up. Recon, probably sent by Lilith, just to watch, follow the residents, wait for weaknesses to show themselves, return to Lilith with info and then form a plan to exploit it. It was usually at that point people died.

"They'll probably expect an attack, traps... I don't know if they'll assume I'm still with you, they might so keep an eye out, I don't know what they'll have by way of firepower or attack. I...actually don't know this time round" she said with a wry sadness finding its way to her eyes. "So I guess...find the traps, keep to stealth as much as we can? They'll have one exit untrapped, just in case. They're not used to hiding from other demons but they're not stupid. So there'll be traps to guide us. Do you have the hex bag still. If you took it off or anything you should have mine. I register to them as demon until they know which one I am. You..." she shrugged, "You have a big neon sign marked Boy King. They want you dead even if Lilith doesn't, she doesn't tell the rank and file"

And thats what these demons were. She didn't like the feeling of telling Sam the tactics, not that she didn't want him to know but it was another reminder that just a few months ago she'd been right in the centre of all this. A year ago she'd wanted to be. She'd believed in it all so completey. "Its up to you though" she finally said, "Tell me how this is gonna play out?"

He knew that he shouldn't have been surprised when Ruby started spilling the details on how the place was going to be set up. Even so, he couldn't help the flash of uncertainty that crossed him over when she began to explain things to him. "Did you always know all of this?" He looked over at her, brows rising skeptically. "About the set-up? Every time we went on a hunt, did you know?" Gee, that didn't make Sam feel stupid or anything at all. He didn't look downright furious at the news, but Sam didn't appear to be all too pleased by it either. "I have the one that I made a while ago. When you showed me." He kept it in his jacket pocket. It was less noticeable there. "When we go in, you're gonna keep behind me." Sam reached into his jacket and pulled out his flask of holy water. It was sealed up tight, so Sam handed it over to Ruby. "I'm more armed than you are." With his abilities alone, that was. "You should be able to use this to your advantage. Just be careful opening it. As long as you don't spill any on yourself, it should be fine."

The holy water was a tactical advantage. They wouldn't expect Ruby to pull something like that out in the heat of battle. The idea of another demon using holy water was so downright preposterous that Sam actually found it clever. "You'll stick behind me. I'll make sure there's nothing unpleasant waiting for you." Just like he knew she'd watch his back at the same time. The place would be rigged against both of them. Demon and hunter. "You ready?"

Hard question, depended on a lot of factors really and she didn't want to answer and hurt him. But she knew that one thing was true. "I knew. I mean I knew the tactics used but those Hunts were still as real, I was in danger from them too, if they'd gotten the knife they'd have killed me, Lilith or no Lilith. And what I did know...I used it to keep you safe as much as I could. I didn't tell you what I knew about how they worked but yeah overall I know more about demon v Hunter tactics than I told you. I'll teach you now though" she offered, "Anything you need to know at all I can teach you"

She nodded when he told her he had the hex bag he'd made, it was a good one. Well made with her help. It would do nicely for what they needed it for. The Demons wouldn't sense him, "That was real too. You see what I mean, yeah I lied, I did and I have to make up for that but it wasn't all a lie.". When he handed her the Holy Water though she stopped the conversation, taking the bottle gingerly before stashing it in her jacket pocket begging it not to spill. That would hurt. "I'll use it, they'll never see that coming. They'll be hurting and you can finish them off." She agreed quickly with the rest of his plan. Staying behind him, out of the line of his powers and ready to stop escapees or fight off any help that might come.

"I'm ready" she said simply and fell into step just a little behind Sam.

He felt a flash of disappointment when she admitted that she had known all of this all along. Sam was supposed to have expected this from her by now. He knew what she had done and who she had been aligned with in the past. He supposed it was because of the sting that followed every single time that he learned or thought too much into her having lied to him all this time. Sam had trusted Ruby so fully and completely; he had never imagined that she'd betray him. Not after all that they had been through together and certainly not after he had decided that she wasn't as evil as she was made out to be. It was going to take some time to get used to. He'd get past it. Kind of like he had gotten past some of that tension tonight by taking Ruby out into the woods and...he supposed that the technical way to put it was that he had felt her up. Just not in the way that one would immediately imagine. Sam probably would have cracked a joke about it, if not for the fact that he was already feeling that twinge of hurt and annoyance at this new (but not so new) revelation.

"We'll start with the learning now," Sam said, shaking his head in disappointment. He slammed his door shut behind him as soon as he got out of the vehicle and then began to move. "Stay quiet," he warned her, glancing over his shoulder only but once before they approached the house ahead. Sam didn't waste any time lingering on the front lawn. Keeping his eyes on the windows of the house as he moved, Sam ducked down toward the side of the house and began to quietly creep his way toward the back entrance. Sticking the shadows, moving in a quick and precise manner - Sam knew what he was doing. Yet, at the same time, so did those demons. He only hoped that they had little to no expectations when it came to being attacked. After all, how could they have ever imagined that they'd be found out before Lilith told them to make their move?

Once Sam found the back door, he reached forward and placed a hand on the doorknob. At the same time, he peered up through the window of the door, finding the room inside dark and seemingly abandoned. At first, he gave the door a tug. It didn't budge. Rolling his eyes, Sam reached into his pocket and pulled out the small lockpick set he'd brought with him. Unwrapping the cloth he had the kit tucked away in, Sam leaned forward and began to fiddle with the lock. He knew that Ruby would keep watch, so Sam didn't bother asking her to do so. Within a few moments, the lock gave off a faint click. Sam pocketed the pick set and straightened up, carefully pulling the door open and easing his way inside without a single word.

There she was. Dissaponting him again. Of course. It had all been going so well until, being her, she'd managed to make a mess of it all over again. Randomly her mind drifted back to their last Hunt, when Sam had killed that demon. His first kill, practice for Alastair, that had all been so set up, so planned, she'd even killed a hell hound and even now sort of felt bad for the creature. Hellhound or not it had trusted that she wouldn't hurt it cause demons didn't do that. Demons were friends. And Ruby had snapped its neck.

"Yeah, I guess we can can't we" she said simply before going quiet as ordered and following Sam toward the house, marvelling at how quiet and light footed he could be. He was one of the best Hunters she'd seen in a long time and that wasn't exagerrating. Or bias. Alright so it was possible it was a tiny bit of bias. Ruby thought about it as they moved forward, ready to fight, she'd admitted the truth about how much she'd known, another truth and she really didn't like that it could build barriers between them all over again. Even after what they'd shared in the woods. The look he'd given her, the fact he was so very dissapointed in her, she could see it. It wasn't hidden. He was dissapointed because she had proven another lie. But there was no time to think about her emotions when they were on a hunt. She even bit back on defending herself against the fact she'd gotten it so wrong. Now wasn't the time

She didn't need to be told to keep an eye out, watching, focusing her mind on anything that might be out there as Sam got to work on the locks. He was good at what he did. A lifetime hunting and all and soon the lock clicked open. A shift in focus and they were ready to go inside. Sam first of course as was the plan, and in case of traps of course.

She stayed silent as she waited at the door to be told to follow him into the darkened hallway of the house. She wouldn't put it past them to have traps. She really wouldn't.

The kitchen had been built at the back of the house. It was the very room that Sam stepped into as soon as he pushed the door open, his large figure turning out to be nothing more than a tall silhouette in the dark as he moved. Sam peered across the kitchen carefully, his eyes immediately locating the first lit object in the room: a coffee machine. There was a red light flicking on and off on the device, indicating that it was plugged in and ready to brew. At the thought, Sam could have sworn that he smelled coffee. It wasn't what he tasted on his tongue - no, blood was the only flavor currently lingering there - but Sam could sure pick up a faint scent. It meant that some had likely been brewed recently; the machine had to have been used, which meant that the home they were invading had most definitely been occupied not too long ago. Moving to the right, as if to turn in closer to the wall, Sam crouched down just slightly and focused his vision onto the floor. It was easier to see, thanks to the fact that he and Ruby had been exposed to the dark for so long. Creeping back and forth through the woods and around the demon infested home had seen to that. His eyes had adjusted, thus giving Sam the ability to see more clearly where he had once practically been blind.

He did not see any markings on the floor. Sam turned slightly, gesturing for Ruby to follow him in. When he was sure that she had gotten the message, Sam continued onward. Keeping to the wall, focusing on looking back and forth between the floor and the path ahead, and listening to every sound that surrounded them made his efforts at keeping themselves hidden far more likely to succeed. Every so often Sam would pause, completely halting in his steps. He took the time to listen. Just listen. Because if one thing went wrong, they would be caught. And while he knew that this was going to definitely turn into a wild and open fight, Sam wasn't quite ready to rush straight into it yet. They had to be careful. It was the only way to prevent themselves from being outnumbered.

Once they hit the hallway, Sam spotted a slight flood of light pouring out from a cracked door ahead. Sam immediately maneuvered himself to the opposite wall, sticking to the side that was most protected by shadow. He managed a couple more feet before he noticed something dark on the floor. Immediately, a hand went up to stop Ruby from continuing ahead. Sam reached into his pocket and pulled out his lock-pick set; the edges were shaped to the point where he could properly use them for the task, so he set to work at shaving off the paint that had been smeared across the floor. Ruby had been right - the place was trapped up after all. If Sam had any doubts about the place having it's own personal little demon problem, he no longer did now.

Pressing a finger to his mouth, Sam straightened up and shoved the tool he had used to break the trap open into his pocket. Then he nodded toward the door and stepped forward. As cautiously as before, Sam advanced in that very direction. He didn't stop until both he and Ruby were lurking just outside of it, placed in a way that if the occupant within - that was, if there even was one - bothered to look out through the gap in the door, they'd be unable to see either of them. Turning himself just slightly, Sam gestured for Ruby to head through the door first. If she did and there really was something unpleasant on the other side, Sam would be able to catch them off guard by jumping in behind her while they were still processing Ruby's entrance. He was hoping that, in doing so, the demon in wait wouldn't have enough time to react. It would spare them both the struggle of a fight and, hopefully, would even allow them the ability to keep on without alerting the others within the house of their presence.

Watching him do what he did best was kind of enthralling for the demon. He'd moved slowly, methodicly, pausing now and again. Listening. Still pretty much the best Hunters of their generations, him and Dean, and their Grandparents before them. She'd never encountered them, but Azazel had of course, wearing the father for a deal with the daughter. Only he would do something like that. He'd thought it was funny. That deal had lead to now though. Mary's sons, the sons she'd never wanted to be Hunters were, and this was the best of them. The one with powers born from that same deal. He destroyed a trap for her and beckoned for her to go ahead of him into the room, It was occupied, she could almost sense the other demon. And as she stepped into the room as Sam had asked he jumped to his feet definitely caught off guard by the particular demon to have walked into his sitting room. And alone.

"Ruby" he almost snarled, if her name hadn't been dirt before then it was now. What had Lilith told him about her, what had she ordered them to do. "Did he let you off your leash then? Nice of him to be so generous to us". Ruby ignored the insult and moved into a fighting stance, her knife glistening in the dim light. The demon didn't look as cocky now. He knew what that did.

"What does Lilith want you to do?" she asked simply, utterly confident both in her own abaility to fight as well as the not so secret weapon just outside of the door. He'd either send this guy back or make him hurt first to find out what he knew. And the demon would tell him. Of course he would. It wasn't something any demon could take for long. What Sam could do would become more feared than Alastair ever had been. Sam had killed him, and made him cry out first. The Grand Inquisitor of Hell. Much as that night had been in so many ways the worst one of her 800 years she remembered sneaking out of the car and peering in the window. Rememebered seeing Alastair die, Sure the coldness in Sam's eyes, the arrogance, had thrown her. But he'd killed him. Actually killed him. And Ruby had known then that he needed to control those powers for himself. And he could, she could help him. The blood, it could be managed. They could do it together. There was so little they couldn't do together.

"What're you smiling about bitch" asked the demon, more worried by it than annoyed. Ruby didn't say anything back. She didn't need to, he'd figure it out soon enough.

The demon moved forward determined to attack her.

Sam waited quietly outside of the door, listening to the sudden exchange from within. One voice. That either meant that they were only dealing with one opponent on the other side or someone was feeling an awful lot more chatty than the rest of his buddies. Sam pressed his back to the wall and peered around the door carefully. Only one demon; one demon that seemed more than eager to attack Ruby as quickly as possible. Sam didn't waste any time as soon as the demon lurched forward at Ruby. He bolted around the corner, grabbed the demon with an arm, and focused his energy on grabbing the black creature within the body that he had practically tackled to the ground. The demon thrashed at him once in a sudden attempt to rise up again, but Sam used that focus he had on the monster and pinned him to the ground. No longer was the action physical. Sam was able to stand upright, towering high above the demon that he'd knocked aside as he did so.

"What are you doing to me? What do you want? I'm not alo -" Sam raised a foot and kicked the demon in the face. He heard something break - probably his nose - but Sam didn't much worry about it. The demon would heal. And the person being possessed would live. "Keep your voice down," Sam warned, calmly stepping over the demon as he spoke. The demon pushed against his hold, but Sam didn't falter. He'd just had a fix of blood. Sam was feeling good. "If you answer our questions, we'll make this easy for you. Otherwise..." Sam focused his hold once more. He knelt down beside the demon, reaching over to grab a pillow from the couch that he'd likely been sitting on before the intrusion. Sam pressed the pillow to the demons face. Then, with a slight frown, he began to concentrate on nothing but pure pain and agony. The demon would scream. But with the pillow over his face, Sam highly doubted that anyone would be able to hear him unless they were passing by.

Immediately, the demon writhed under his grip. Sam kept at it for a few moments. While doing so, he looked up at Ruby - she looked okay. Unharmed. Not that Sam would have let the demon hurt her if he had anything to say about it. Deciding that the demon had endured enough for the time being, Sam pulled the pillow from his face and looked down at him calmly. "Ready to talk?"

Ruby watched Sam work entirely too aware of what he was doing to the demon that had threatened her, torture, she'd seen it before. She'd taught him how, and for all he could do with a touch to her, a demonic second base as it were. This was the exact opposite. This was pain. This was worse than anything that demon would have known before. But oddly enough it was the pillow that threw her, she knew the logic. She understood it. But all the same her mind flashed back to a time when she'd barely known him, the Colt pointed at her face, and a conversation. Sam had lowered the gun and Ruby had known that she had her 'in'.

"That’s my boy. This won’t be easy, Sam. You’re gonna have to do things that go against that gentle nature of yours. There’ll be collateral damage…but, it has to be done.". Had to be done. Had to be? How the hell stupid had she been to force him into this. That gentle nature had died before her eyes and she'd been the one to put the final nails in the coffin. He'd told her then that he didn't have to like it. These things she'd teach him and she'd shrugged, arrogant and self assured that her plan was rightious. That Lucifer would walk free and he would be the one to see it happen.

"No. You wouldn’t be Sam if you did. Was he Sam now?. Had she pushed him so far away from that? No, there were still lots of times when he was, when he'd smile, or sulk, or do that thing with his hair he always did that she was reminded of just how human he still was. She'd keep an eye on him with the blood, keep it to what he did to her and when they needed it for hunts. That's how it would be. That would be wisest. She stepped a little closer, getting behind Sam and looking down at the demon disdainfully, all doubt about Sam and the abilities gone from her face. There would be nothing the demons could use against her.

"I'd talk. I mean you're gonna anyway and he'll keep going until you do. This way is easier. How many more in the house?, Why did she send you? Is it after me or him, or both? What was the plan?"

The demon glared though the pain he was still obviously in from Sam's assault. "Just cause you went from being Azazel's favourite little whore to Winchester's doesn't mean I need to answer to you?". For all her talk of impassiveness the words got to her, not cause it was a lie, it wasn't. But around Sam, she didn't like when they talked about her like that in front of Sam, and of course they could now. Lilith had never told them why Ruby had to hide her alligance, those that knew it, but now they were free to insult her as they saw fit. "Just talk?" she tried again, "It'll be easier on you if you just talk. Then you get to go back downstairs, which I know is the last thing any demon wants but trust me when I tell you its better than the alternative. But whatever she said he wouldn't just talk ". They never just talked, demons had gotten stupider since her day. Back then demons knew when they were beaten, little taunting, threatening to come back for family, the classy stuff. Not this, this was just stupid behaviour.

"Tell me what Lilith wants?"

The demon spat at her and Ruby rolled her eyes. "Whatever happened to class?" she muttered, and looked over at Sam with a shrug.

No class indeed. Directly disrespecting Ruby in his presence had been a mistake as well, but Sam wasn't quite as vocal about that thought as he was with the entire interrogation in itself. "I guess we'll just have to try this again," Sam said softly, flipping the pillow over between his hands and shaking his head at the demon almost pitifully. He couldn't imagine being that loyal to some evil bitch that probably couldn't care less about the existence of the demon he was getting ready to torture all over again. Sam wondered why Lilith's demons even bothered. Was it all they knew? Were they really foolish enough to believe that they were going to get something out of helping Lilith? Or were they all just so far gone that they didn't care enough in the first place to begin with? Sam thought that it was different than it was with Ruby. Ruby had believed that what she had been out to do was right. At least by her. Sam could easily have placed Ruby with the rest of these demons in his head over a year ago when she had first came to him with her cryptic messages and unexpected visits. Now it was different; now Ruby was more than just a demon with a job to do. She was a demon in love. And to cap it all off, she was a demon that was in love with him.

Sam dropped the pillow over the demons face again, holding it down with a hand so that the demon couldn't be heard when he started up again. A little focus was all that it took, really. The demon started to push against the invisible hold that Sam had on him, his voice coming out muffled against the pillow once more as Sam tore into him and made him regret his very existence. "You're going to tell us what you know," Sam said carefully, mind and body both fixed on making sure that the demon suffered in every way possible, "otherwise this isn't going to stop. I'll keep torturing you. I will find a place for you somewhere, I will tie you down, and I will turn your pain into my entertainment." He stopped speaking, briefly, as the body below him lurched at an odd angle, the pain rising up so incredibly that the demon found himself losing control of the body that he had taken over. "Trust me when I say that I would be very, very entertained." Sam looked down at the pillow, his expression going from completely focused to filled with nothing but hatred in a flash. "After all, there's nothing that I hate more than demons." He looked at Ruby, that furious look on his face softening just a little. "Demons like him," he clarified, right before releasing the pillow.

"Feeling chatty yet? Where's Lilith?" He folded his arms across his chest. Watching. Waiting. At the wrong breath out of that demon alone, Sam was going to snap and torture him again. Something about the look in the demons eyes told Sam that he knew that much, at the very least.

Dammit he was enjoying this. She watched him, watched the poor son of a bitch demon that had dared annoy him and she could see it. On some level, maybe even one he wasn't aware of yet. He was getting a kick out of the power. Her fault. She had made him this. He was making the demon into little more than a marionette in his own meatsuit and Ruby could only imagine the conflict in the demons mind. More of this? Or face Lilith.

"I don't know" he finally spat "She moves around...last she was in Ohio, I don't know after that"

Apparently what Sam was doing was worse than Lilith's torture, and Ruby knew how that felt. The demon was giving in, and talking and really she had to take the time to use that information. She moved across to stand just behind Sam, looking down into the pained face of the demon. She could see him for what he was, just as he could see her. And she could see the disgust in his eyes but that was easier to ignore. She was here with Sam, and no matter her worrie about what he was doing. That was what was important. But she had some questions to ask of the demon. She couldn't get bogged down in thinking about all this. She had to just focus for now, worry would come later. "How many here?" she asked again. "How many of you, and what was the plan?"

He shuddered again under a spasm of pain that seemed to take him over entirely and muttered. "Four, one is out watching your friends. Two upstairs, we were supposed to watch, just watch you two and his brother and the girl. She knows there's more there than they're saying. We were supposed to report back and then make a move when she tells us, go for you and the Slayer, Lilith wants you boys to hurt, said...you take her toy away she'll take her back. Dean's too"

Ruby wondered if the demon thought he was getting away. And wondered, just for a moment if Sam would be merciful and just exorcise him. Or had he gone far enough yet to kill for the hell of it. She, for the first time wasn't sure of what Sam would do. And she realised quickly that she really didn't like that feeling.

Ohio. That was only a few states over. If only Sam had known. He would have packed his stuff up and took off, no questions asked. Sam furrowed his brow, frustration burning at him as soon as he realized how close he could have been. For a moment, Sam half wondered if Lilith had set this up. She knew that Sam was going to find these demons. She knew that he was going to interrogate them and get answers out of them. Maybe she wanted for Sam to know how much of a miss he'd just made. He could see her now. Wearing some petite, young girl as her meatsuit. Smiling at him mischievously. Mocking. Always mocking. Sam closed his eyes, teeth grinding together. Oh, how he was going to make her suffer. It was going to be glorious. Breathing in heavily, Sam forced himself to look down at the demon in irritation. "You don't know." He shook his head. "Then how are you getting your information back to her? How does she keep up with the comings and goings out here?" He stood up and kicked the demon - hard - right in the stomach. "Who are you reporting to, huh? Who's the messenger?" He wasn't giving up. Sam would find Lilith. He had to.

He didn't have to look back to know that Ruby was lurking just behind him. Watching, of course. If he wasn't so caught up in all that he was doing now, he might have taken a moment to relish in the fact that she was probably feeling particularly proud of him right now. She always had been one to embrace and encourage his actions when he got like this. Sam liked making her proud. It helped him feel more confident of the fact that he was doing the right thing. Of course, now that he knew that Ruby's intentions hadn't always been right, one might think that he'd feel differently. But he didn't. Because he loved Ruby; with that love, he wanted to prove himself. Show her that he was worth all the trouble. If only he had bothered to look at her for even a second, Sam would have realized that she wasn't looking too confident of the situation now. But he had more to worry about. There was a demon in the room and Sam was fully determined to get what he wanted out of him.

He let Ruby ask her own questions. Sam would have stood by quietly to let her get her own taste of the...excitement? Yeah. Excitement. Unfortunately, when the demon began to speak, he struggled to keep himself silent. The mere thought of those demons plotting to harm Buffy and Ruby - and then the word 'toy'; they were not toys - it made a new flash of anger burn through him so fast that Sam thought that he was going to lose control of himself entirely right then and there. He could all but bite back his fury when he spat out, "No one is touching them. No one." Not that it mattered on the demons part. He wasn't going to be able to do anything when Sam was through with him.

The demon didn't say anything when asked who he reported to, he didn't need to, he just glanced across at Ruby, she could tell her boy if she really felt the need, she knew just as well as he did, the messanger wasn't important, Ruby knew, "Sam, he reports to someone who reports to someone who maybe once saw Lilith from far away." she told him by way of explaination. "Thats how she works. You don't get that lucky that easy unfortunatly. We can find the demon he reports to and run down the list but she'll have gone again before we get close. We have to get right into that inner circle, and no before you ask I'm not one of those. I was always kept apart because I they had to believe I was the traitor. They could know I was Azazel's cause that made sense to them, I was pretty well known when he had power, not well liked either, then he fell and I ran for cover. Ran to you"

The demon in spite of everything, in spite of the pain laughed again, he couldn't help it, excruciating pain or not this was almost tragic, If tragic meant really really funny. "And now you're keeping her. I mean really, people said she was still protected, but she must really have done a number on you. You can keep her and blondie safe for now but how long is it gonna last huh? Lilith gets what she wants, just ask Ruby here"

Ruby didn't answer, she instead turned moving to the window. Not wanting to think about the statement. Cause she knew as well as anyone that it was usually true.

Of course. Of course. Sam rolled his eyes, releasing the demon from the torturous grip so that he was able to slide his hands through his hair. Looking thoroughly pissed off, Sam turned away from both the demon and Ruby and flopped down aimlessly on the couch behind him. He kept enough of a hold on the demon to keep the son of a bitch from getting up and attacking, but beyond that Sam seemed outright disinterested in him. Lilith was, he decided, going to drive him insane. How was he supposed to track her down if every demon he spoke to about her gave him nothing piled on top of nothing else? And Ruby. She wasn't being terribly helpful, was she? Sam rubbed at his forehead, annoyance becoming the dominant emotion for the time being. It was interesting in contrast to the warmth that he had felt earlier with Ruby. Now he just felt hot. Not the good kind of hot, but the kind of hot that made him want to punch something repeatedly until things were better again.

"I'm going to find her," Sam finally said, after sitting for some time. "I'm going to hunt her down, I'm going to find her, and I am going to kill her." He looked over to the demon, still no less annoyed than he had been before. "She's not going to win." He shook his head, looking to the door that they had left open upon bursting into the room. "And there's nothing that you or anyone else in the world can do to stop me." Sam didn't get up. He merely put an arm out, gathered up his focus, and used his anger to break the demon apart. Rather than sending him back downstairs, Sam decided to kill him. The walls shook slightly and the bright, white burst of light that began to break free of the body that was writhing on the floor might well have been blinding to anyone who wasn't used to Sam's ability. Sam himself wasn't entirely used to it yet, but he did find it enjoyable. And useful. Very useful.

Once the body was sprawled across the floor messily, Sam leaned back into the couch to gather himself. Killing demons off did tend to drain him a bit. But he wasn't quite finished yet. The sound of feet shuffling along the floor above reminded him so. They had heard them, probably. Sam didn't have time to take a break. They were coming. Scowling, Sam pushed himself onto his feet and motioned for Ruby to join him at the body. "Help me move him to the couch."

Oh Ruby was used to the ability. Very used to it, she'd taught him how. But at the bursts of light she turned back suprised, and altogether worried again not that the mask of calm she showed him would give that away. But there had been a human in there. Still alive, just like there were upstairs, and he'd known, he had to have known they hadn't been there that long. Did it matter anymore, was he that angry, and would he ever be that angry at her, or was she different. Was he forgetting she was a demon in favour of his love for her.

Of course she'd never say it to him. Never tell him she was worried or scared for him because it wasn't her place to. Not when she'd done this to him in the first place. No, if he wanted to kill demons then he could kill demons. He had done it before his ability. He and Dean, she didn't know why she was so suprised. Ruby moved at his word, helping lift the now dead meatsuit to the couch and wondering what the plan was. She still had the holy water he'd given her, and the idea of using it did appeal to her on some level. Maybe this was still all okay. Maybe it had been a lesson to the other demons. Killing this one. Maybe there was a purpose to it. And there was soemthing truly amazing about him when he fully gave in to the power.

Beautiful and terrible all at once, but she didn't think he'd ever hurt her. She'd help him, she could, because as much as he was doing now, he could touch her too, the demon inside. And it felt amazing. Every single time he touched her it felt like there was no one else in the world but them, and all the lies and all the pain she'd caused just slipped away. Just for a little bit. She craved that again. Just that briefst of contacts that reaffirmed her love for him every single time. And that meant something, something good. Maybe it even meant that the things she had taught him, the gifts from her blood couldn't be all bad. Not when he could do that. A warmth rose in her at the thought and she smiled, it was even genuine.

"What now?" she asked softly once the body lay on the couch.

Sam saw the smile and he immediately decided that it was because Ruby was proud of him. That thought alone, untrue as it may have been, was a motivator. "Get behind the door," Sam told her, turning to the body that they had just thrown onto the couch. He leaned over and grabbed the body by the shoulders, hoisting it upward so that it was in a sitting position. Then Sam dragged it to the right end of the couch, pushed it back, and turned the head so that it looked like the demon that had been inside was looking across the room distractedly. The spot behind the door wouldn't fit the both of them - Sam was far too big - so he went around to the part of the wall that pushed back and out of sight, shoulders pressing up against the wall so that he could keep to the side and remain unseen.

"Stay quiet," Sam warned, pressing an ear to the wall so that he could hear better. Footsteps could be heard growing louder and louder, along with a pair of voices to match. Sam drew in his breath and held it, waiting for the two demons to step into the room so that he and Ruby could get a good jump on them. The body on the couch would be a good temporary distraction. They'd get far enough in the room. Nowhere to run when he and Ruby had the door side blocked off. It was a good plan. Unfortunately, after the attack Sam didn't know what he was going to end up doing. He hadn't decided if he was going to kill both demons or send them back to Hell. Maybe if they didn't piss him off as badly as the last one had he'd spare them.

Not that going to Hell would be much of a spare. From what he knew of the place, Sam probably would have personally wished for death if he'd been given the option. Death was the more merciful approach.

Ruby did as Sam had asked, moved in to position, stayed quiet, all the while watching Sam and wondering what he planned to do. He had the power to make happen whatever he decided was appropriate. He could kill them, spare them. And she wondered if he'd kill them purely because he could. There was a time when he wouldn't have done it. Wouldn't ever have concieved of it. But she'd changed him. She knew logic dictated she tell him of her worries, or tell Dean about the blood. But if she did either thing he'd just leave her. She'd have betrayed him, again. So she followed what he wanted, standing behind the door, holy water ready and she could tell the demons were coming. She wondered what they'd notice first, the look of agony in his eyes or the fact that there was just a body before them. The demon was gone, obliterated, gone to wherever demons went when they died.

Three...Two...

"...have to get the slut and the blonde girl" they said as they entered into the room "... Slayer they call her, its getting them alone that'd be the problem, bet Winche..." They'd trailed off in shock as she expected they would, but that was all they got. Fact was, they'd barely gotten to react to the fact their friend was dead before Ruby threw the water. It arced away from her, a few droplets from the lid dripping on to her hand as she dropped the bottle. Her eyes darkened as she fought tot ignore the shooting pain in her hand in favour of grabbing the knife in her other one while they cried out in pain. She'd no intention of touching their skin or clothes when they were like that, not unless she had to. But they knew her, and they knew what the knife she carried could do.

"Sit" she said sharply gesturing to the same couch the meatsuit of their friend sat at. "Might as well keep you all together".

But one of them seemed warier than the other, having stumbled back from the holy water, he'd spotted Sam, and Ruby didn't know weather to be proud of what she'd made him or wary of it, but the look in the demons eyes. It was nothing but fear.
