Mercedes "Sadie" Goldendahl needs an ex-lover named Lucas, a vampire from her past after she was turned against her will. She miraculously stumbled across someone with a cure, a way to reverse the vampirism, after saving a woman from two fledglings in the dead of night. Her story involves being raised as a Hunter along side Christopher Andrew Moreau, but upon being turned against her will, she was abandoned by the family of Hunters and forced to live her "life" away from Maple Grove, MN. After a few short months of starving herself, she was found by Lucas, an older vampire who disfavored feeding on people; instead he fed on new fledglings before killing them himself.
He had a passion for 'younger' women and Sadie being turned just before 18 years old, young in appearance for her age, was the perfect doll for him to 'care' for.
Sadie's love of Annie, the Hunter partner she was raised with, never disappeared, but Lucas was a capable charmer - he eventually brought her around to his way of thinking. Rough and passionate, Lucas gave her what she needed. He was kindness embodied to her by letting her feed from him rather than fledglings whom still resembled their previous human selves. She lacked for little in his care except the warmth of Annie's understanding. Lucas used her to bring down fledglings, there wasn't much she could spare from him with their blood bond.
But it broke one day after Hunters set out to kill them for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sadie never wondered how the Hunters kept finding them or why it was so easy for Lucas to find fledglings for them. All she knew was how to teach him some of the Hunter aspects and pray when they separated to make it harder to track them that he'd make it to the next town as they planned. Except the link shattered, her connection to him disappeared in a disorienting whiplash. She thinks he died that day.
After receiving a miracle, a change at a second life, Sadie was given a new identity by her mysterious benefactor - she even earned a U.S. Marshall badge before joining an elite secret society. A selective division of agents... She fit right in. Her skills weren't rusty from the years spent on the run and her goal as a human was to find Annie who just so happened to be part of the agency.
Now, things are looking wonderful for them, but she's having nightmares about Lucas still being alive all because Annie said she couldn't be sure he was dead...
Could he really be alive, somewhere, looking for his Mercy Doll who was no longer eternally seventeen?
