"Don't believe in wasting Brotherhood on anyone who doesn't want to practice it..."
With Magneto missing and dozens of mutants forcibly de-powered and disillusioned in their cause, the Brotherhood face a number of issues. Pyro has taken the helm of the group, but little has been done since the events surrounding Alcatraz came to pass.
All attempts to find Magneto have been fruitless. Recruiting is relatively stagnant as the internal structure of the Brotherhood - with Mystique also having made herself untraceable - is a mess. Those who are loyal grow impatient; those who are de-powered become progressively irritated. Something needs to happen, and soon, before the faction splinters under pressure.
"We stood together as X-Men, and we still divided and fell."
With Xavier, Jean Grey and Cyclops all gone and mourned, the X-Men seem relatively directionless. Xavier's dream for a peaceful coexistence still lingers, but has lost a great deal of momentum in the wake of the great man's death.
Storm, not at the forefront of the X-Men, has the seemingly impossible task of holding together the school and team with very little to work with and little experience to go on. The stagnant calm of the Brotherhood plus the media backlash after the Phoenix's rampage has made this all the more difficult - the X-Men don't know which way to turn as they brace for the next unseen challenge that they know is coming.
"When a Sinister person means to be your enemy, they always start by trying to become your friend."
Quietly gathering followers and materials is Mr. Sinister. It's been five years since he sent his Marauders to massacre the Morlocks, and at long last he's in need of supporters again as he sets his sights on extraordinary power as opposed to mere 'spare parts'.
Sinister is after a number of things at once, though his motives remain his own. Having sent out for samples of the Cure, his followers can only guess what he's plotting to do with the supposed 'anti-Cure' he's making. Though the information might be valuable to other mutants, no Marauder is stupid enough to break their silence and cross Sinister. So they bide their time and find more Marauders, waiting for Sinister to pull together his plan - supposedly, his quest to find a "rare bird" which has him looking towards the X-Men...
