If you’re a child from St Mary’s Isle you will know it well. Walk up to the forrest separating the town from the old mental institution and stand on one of the stumps with your back towards the forrest. Close your eyes and wait. A stick will snap, your heart will quicken, the boys in front of you will gasp and your foot will jerk forward. You’ll hold your ground though, as you count the seconds down in your head. Just 50 more seconds. Your mind will create monstrous creatures and everyone of them will be inching their way towards you. You will think about Jessica Pilby’s breasts instead and how you only really have 41 seconds left. Another stick will snap and it’s close enough for you to open your eyes and see the boy’s eyes; that are in front of you, snap open as well. You all swallow hard. Nothings there. You have to tell yourself that. 30 seconds left. You think about how you’re going to tell your father you broke his record and you want to smile, but you can’t another twig snaps at it’s right behind you. You feel someone(thing)s breath on the back of your neck and you don’t even need to remind yourself you only have 20 seconds left, because you’ve jumped off and run off with the rest of boys. You don’t even turn around. Your hearts racing and you tell yourself you’ll do it again, you after all only had 20 seconds left. But, you also know as you tell yourself this... it is a lie. Welcome to St Mary’s Isle. A simple town, although a little behind with the world in technology, the town only having one internet cafe and the computers all being connected to dial up. But for most residents of St Mary’s Isle, this is exactly why the like the place. Its simplicity and its isolation. Some have been raised here there whole life and have taken over their family’s farm or business, others have come to St Mary’s to find an escape from city or suburban life, while some have come to work out the mystery behind a simple children’s game and the rumors that have caught wind about the disappearances that have been connected to it and the run down institution just a few miles away.
