Founded in 1843 by Marie Laveau, the so-called Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, the Laveau Academy was originally a school devote solely to education those magical gifted students who couldn't afford to travel across the country to the Salem Institute in Massachusetts. Schooling mostly the poor, the freed slaves, or the few members of the upperclasses unwilling to send their children north, the school soon had a reputation for taking in the misfits of American magical society. Soon, wizards and witches from around the world, rich and poor alike, were sending their students to Laveau Academy. Then the Civil War broke out, and with the succession of Louisiana from the Union in 1861, the Academy became the wizarding school servicing the Confederate States of America. The Academy, however, continued to have an open door policy. Confederate or Union, it didn't matter. All were welcome at the Academy. That didn't change with the end of the war. While never able to compete with Salem, Laveau was able to build itself into the school to attend. Of course, over the years, most of its graduates have continued to be misfits. After all, the school refuses to follow any set guidelines either those established by Salem or those established by Hogwarts. The faculty is some of the best and the most ruthless in the nation, and possibly the entire world. The school also has the sole distinction of existing in an entirely Muggle area of the country, and not doing a thing to hide its nature. Magic has never been looked down on in New Orleans. In fact, it's an open secret. The regular citizens don't speak about it, but they know it's there. For over a century, the two have existed in a relative balance. The wizards blend into society, the Muggles don't call for any witch hunts. In 2009, all that changed. There have been attacks in the city. So far the Muggles shrug it off as post-Katrina violence, but wizards know the truth. People without a mark on them, people with magical symbols branded into their skin. They know a war is coming. Laveau might be the only thing standing between it and the rest of the world. Good luck. |
