zero tolerance Ten years ago, mutants were outed to the general public to panic, confusion, and fear. According to official record, it began at Cape Citadel, a military base in Florida, when Erik Lehnsherr -- calling himself 'Magneto' -- led a terrorist group of fellow mutants called the Brotherhood in an attack to seize control of the base and spread his message of Homo Superior. Magneto wanted a race war, and he aimed to get it. This attack was thwarted, not by the military personnel present, but by the actions of another mutant. His name was Charles Xavier. One upon a time, as boys, Erik and Charles had been friends. However, their differing views on the roles of mutants in society meant that in the fight at Cape Citadel, they were on opposing sides. Xavier was joined by his students, the first class of another mutant group he called the X-Men. The battle that ensued was an ugly one. Although the X-Men were well-trained, they were young and inexperienced in comparison to the members of the Brotherhood, who were several years older and much more willing to win at all costs. It was not a fair fight in any sense. In order to protect his students and everyone else on the base, Xavier made the difficult decision to use his considerable powers of telepathy to effectively 'turn off' Erik's brain, except for those autonomic functions necessary to keep him alive. Afterwards, Charles turned himself into the police for attempted murder. To not do so would have gone against everything he believed about mutants being equal to other humans and would have proven Erik's belief in mutant superiority. At no point, however, did he give up any of the identities of the other mutants present. Xavier's sacrifice did a great deal to help lessen some of the fear that was generated by the rest of the world finding out about mutant existence, but not much. For a long while after the battle at Cape Citadel, both sides had to lay low and find a way to rebuild without their leaders. Now, however, with the passage of the government's new Mutant Registration Act, it looks like the time for mutants keeping a low profile is over.
