On Christmas Day, 2007, the governments of the so-called civilized countries around the world finally opted to eliminate the "mutant problem". In a coordinated attack that united the military forces of the U.N., the national armies of many countries, and secretive organizations such as Black Air and S.W.O.R.D, targets ranging from Xavier's Institute of Higher Learning to The Muir Island Research Facility to the entire island nation of Genosha were attacked. Mutants around the world, whether living in large groups or mixing with the humans found themselves targeted by Sentinels. No one was safe, and casualties were enormous. With the death of many powerful mutants, Charles Xavier included, the people in power felt that mutant resistance would collapse completely. The United States Congress began measures to reintroduce the Mutant Registration Act as well as increasing funding to Trask's Sentinel Program. Debate raged around the world concerning what to do with the few mutants who remain alive. With two-thirds of the world's mutant population neutralized, that still left a surprisingly large number of omega level mutants alive and dangerous. A few went into hiding, a few more ended up rallying at the ruins of Xavier's school, and eventually a leader emerged, but it wasn't the leader than many humans were expecting. Working off a promise made to a dying Xavier, Magneto's first action was rebuilding the school, Cerebro, and Xavier's dream of peace. He ended up heading a complicated and large resistance movement, but not everyone supported Magneto as Xavier's successor. The three remaining original X-Men refused to submit to his whims, believing it all to be a clever ruse to build an army to oppose humanity. They formed their own branch of the resistance, still working out of the mansion. As the mutants try to regroup and mourn their losses, humanity is preparing its next move. However, no one is certain what that next move is. All-out war is doubtful, but the Registration Act and concentration camps are almost a certainty, but more disturbing are the articles in various scientific journals that speak of a cure. |
