It was funny, really, how you could spend your life caught up in the little trials and tribulations of everyday chores, lamenting over trivialities and then suddenly something happened to topple everything. Something that left you asking yourself why you've never taken the time to get to know a certain person. If you'd lost the chance for a friendship that might have -
"Oliver?" Thaddeus Bradley's hand landed heavily on Oliver's shoulder. "Is there a particular reason why you're drawing eyeballs?"
Oliver winced and looked at the parchment in front of him. He hadn't even been aware of what he'd been drawing. However, the Scot never got the chance to explain himself as Thadeus, with his usual nonchalant flair, shoved a few folders aside and sat down on Oliver's desk.
"I've got work for you, kid."
Oliver's eyes flickered up to his mentor. "Thad, I'm working my way through the Jenkins-case. Just because it happened three years ago, doesn't mean we should give up on it."
"You're drawing eyeballs, Oliver. I'm questioning your sanity," Thaddeus sighed and dropped a new folder on Oliver's desk. "Madeline Fletcher. Halfblood. 19. Missing 7 weeks," the Auror informed Oliver in a business-like voice that hid the fact that this particular case shook the older man more than he liked to let on.
"But the Jen-" Oliver tried to protest, only to stop abruptly when Thaddeus opened the folder and all but shoved a photograph under the Scot's nose. Oliver winced. The girl on the picture looked young and carefree. Like his sister used to before she vanished.
"Fine." He pressed his lips together and shoved Thaddeus off his desk. "Is that all we have?" He indicated the rather thin folder. "A few pictures, age and general description? Thad, she vanished seven weeks ago and we're only start looking for her now? Why is that? Didn't anyone miss her?" He flipped through the folder, frowning in concentration.
Oliver didn't noticed Thaddeus leaving, nor did he notice anything else for the coming hours. Madeline Fletcher. He would find that girl. And Merlin help anyone who tried to get into his way.
