PotC fic: In Remembrance (Jack, G, 1/1) Title: In Remembrance Author:shyaway Rating: G Character: Jack Disclaimer: Pirates of the Caribbean and its characters belong to Disney. Summary: Having been reunited with his ship, Jack pays tribute to an old friend.
Jack had almost completed his inspection of the Black Pearl. For the most part he'd been pleased by what he had found. He had managed to restore his own cabin remarkably well; Barbossa had not thrown his possessions away, but appropriated them for his own use, and they had survived unscathed. As for the rest of the ship, Gibbs and Anamaria had done a good job of patching up the damage. They had cleaned and repaired her so well that the uninformed would never have guessed her history of mutiny and curses. Jack himself would not have guessed were it not for the change in crew.
He wouldn't miss the old crew. Except for one of them. The lack of evidence of the mutineers' ten-year occupation was too good to be true, though. There must be some scar left.
He came to the end of his circuit of the gun deck, and found the change. There was a full complement of cannon - except for one. The one that was used as an anchor for a good man who'd had the misfortune to value loyalty over self-preservation. Such a man should have a memorial.
Jack knelt down in the empty space and stroked the edge of the gun port. "You won't mind, will you, Pearl love? I know you liked him too."
The ship acquiesced with a tilt. Jack got out his knife and began to carve.
"All done," he said with an approving pat to the bulkhead, "and there couldn't be a better place for it." He brushed the wood shavings away from the inscription.
